Killed a Big Bass :(
I gut hooked a fish last weekend using a 5/0 hook. She was 2lb 10oz, so definitely not a monster. I just wasn't paying attention, and just for the record I was using 5" trick sticks from *.com, which are every bit as awesome as people say. Caught 7 bass in the first 11 casts, including my new PB!!! Anyways, back to the point. It's possible to gut hook with a large hook if you're not paying attention.....

Texas Gulf Coast
I'm also in the Dallas area but my parents live in Matagorda. I've never fished down there, a shame because my parents have been there for 7 years and I go down at least 3 times a year. Hopefully that'll change soon. I'm relatively new to fishing and I usually only go down there for holidays or big family gatherings (5 sisters, 2 brothers, and all thier spouses, kids, etc.) so there's not usually a whole lot of time to "get away", but I will someday...... just in case anyones interested, my parents own/operate a b&b down there and play host to a lot of fisherman. There is the main house and there is a 2 bedroom "lodge" with full baths and a full kitchen, that's where most of the fisherman choose to stay. Check it out if you'd like: http://stanley-fisher.com/

Fishing Alone or With a Buddy
I prefer going with a buddy, but I will go alone if I have to. I get too impatient when I'm by myself. When I'm with my best friend I get just as excited when he catches a fish as I do when I catch one, sometimes I'll take a break and just watch and root for him and he'll do the same. Plus I'm terrible at making descisions so it's nice to have a second opinion. Also we can cover more water and try more techniques/baits, if he's in a good spot I'll join him or if what I'm doing is working then he'll switch to that. We thrive on each others success, it's been that way since we were kids, although we're new to bass fishing, we've shared many other hobbies from playing guitar to skateboarding, and we're always on the same "team". It's kind of sad when I catch a fish by myself and turn to give a high five and no one is there. I'll take the comradery over concentration any day, but then again, I fish for fun...

Tackle boxes
sounds like you're talking about a regular backpack to me. try getting yourself a well-made, all-weather backpack and see if that works for you. should be the perfect size to hold 2 boxes, plastics, and all your accessories...

Lures for weebeds?
If the fish are jumping try a topwater lure. Also try a Zoom super fluke, its shaped like a baitfish and can be rigged weedless.

Okeechobee Fats 1200 tackle bag
I have it and I love it!!! The shoulder strap is greatness. I'm a bank fisher so lugging a huge plastic tackle box around a pond or lake was killer, with this bag I can hold more stuff and I'm not sore from carrying it all day. That my friend is what they call a win-win, add the fact that it's $40 and now you have yourself a win-win-win!!! The only con was the 90 year-old sales guy at wal-mart who tried to convince me to buy a massive rolling ice chest to use as a tackle box instead. His exact words were: "Son, I'm about to give you the best advice you ever heard. That ice chest is stupid, it don't have a brain. You know what that means don't ya? It don't know what it was made for, you can use it for anything!" -true story

- Have you ever been able to tell there is going to be little to no bites?
once last november when I arrived at my favorite pond and found that they had just dredged it. the place stunk like dead fish and the water, well it didn't really look like water anymore............come to think of it, that place hasn't been the same since.......- whats everyones favorite snack while fishing
Banana and red bull on the way, lots of peach propel while I'm there, wendys baconator on the way home.- zoom super fluke
Flukes have been my go-to bait for over a year now, I love 'em! I use any kind of watermelon or pumpkin combo but I've had the most success with watermelon seed and mardi gras. Smokey rainbow worked really well on a recent trip to Gary Yamamoto's fishing lodge (sugoi lakes lodge) where the water was really clear. I use a 4/0 or 5/0 EWG hook and fish them either with a jerk-jerk-pause retrieve or just reel them in painfully slow. I have never caught anything over 4lbs on a fluke, but then again I never gotten skunked since I started using them either!!! - Have you ever been able to tell there is going to be little to no bites?
