Hi RF, You've received quite a bit of input, options and opinions about your upcoming rod & reel purchase. I believe that your previous thoughts regarding the Pflueger President Spinning Combos are very good. I purchased this a couple of these combos for my wife 6 years ago when she started fishing with me. She was just learning (everything) and these outfits were perfect. Reasonably priced, good quality and durable. There are a few different model / actions to chose from making picking the right one for you and you son possible. Both of my wife's combo's are still performing like the day we got them. You can certainly spend more if you chose to however I believe this is a very good product and one that you'll have for a long time to come. So after reading back through the responses here - I'm not sure we actually answered Rooster's original question. I would add that in order to follow, intercept and / or eventually find bass before, during and after this "predictable movement pattern twice a year", it would help if an angler had located the fish prior to their departure. Some history on the water could help with the where & when but you know what they say about fishing history. Either way there's no replacement for being on the water and fishing it correctly with regard to each seasonal pattern. An important variable here is what does the predominate food / bait the bass eat at these times of the year do. This info shouldn't be ignored and could be the key. A-Jay

Well I'm looking at a Winter Wonderland here so you'll get not sympathy from me. But I'd say, Yes by all means, hit the water. Enjoy the sun & fresh air. But I will add that if you have historically struggled to get bit under similar conditions, you may want to utilize a different technique and / or presentation than what has not worked in the past. One way to look at is you can catch nothing doing anything - might as well try something new. Who knows you just might bump into a few. During the conditions you've mentioned the fish are often in a neutral or even negative mood. This does make trying something new hard to believe in and results could be less than hoped. Not knowing much about your particular waters or fishing style makes it hard to provide viable suggestions. But stay positive, at least your fishing . . . . . . The other way to go is to pick one presentation and only one and stick to it All Day. I'd recommend that it be something that you enjoy doing and have a high level of confidence in. For me - I'd be tying on a jig / craw and soaking that bait anywhere and everywhere until I got bit. Sometimes it works, sometimes it does not. Good Luck A-Jay

The deeper water being Cooler in the Summer and Warmer in the winter is all relative to the season air temperature. I think the general consensus is that the deeper water routinely fluctuates the least meaning it takes longer to heat up in the summer and takes longer to cool in the winter. In both instances the deeper portions of a lake rarely reflect the same drastic temperature changes as the shallower areas during cold front or heat wave conditions. At some point during the cold and hot weather seasons, the deeper water temps become steady at whatever they will be for that season. Bass will locate themselves where they are safe, most comfortable and have a decent food source available. This deeper stable environment however, often times makes finding and catching fish quite a challenge. A-Jay

Well Jay, I don't know what to tell you. Do what you must. I did a search and there were several pages of info available. Occasionally that bugger is a little temperamental. I'd encourage you to give it another try. But there are 42,600 + members here, and many are very willing to help. Several already have and their posts are only a click away in the search function. Back to your original topic - micro guides. Some anglers swear by them and some do not believe that they make a difference at all. You may have to try some out and decide for yourself.
