A-Jay's 4th Annual Ice Out / Open Water Countdown Thread ~
Steady snowfall will spread across northern Michigan later this afternoon and evening. Strong wind gusts of 30-40+ mph will lead to areas of blowing and drifting snow, rapid drops in visibility, and even whiteout conditions within snow bands at times this evening and tonight. 6 Weeks 5 Days and a wake up seems fairly distant right about now. Either way, it's Fish Catch Friday ~ Going By-Catch on this one. On 30 April 2019, while fishing for smallmouth bass in northern Michigan, I caught my personal best Musky. The fight and especially the landing of this mutant, was quite an adventure. A-Jay

Fast Food
I retired from the service in 2007. Admittedly, I may not have handled the relocation & the change of life style as well as I could have. My wife's health was super unstable and uncertain. My dietary choices were not what they are now. I ate and drank - whatever. I woke up one morning (summer of 2009) with my 'belly' lying on the bed beside me. Snapped out of my funk right then. Been on the straight & narrow pretty much ever since. So no 'fast food' any more. Unless we're calling an occasional pizza 'fast food', then I've had a few of those. Undoing what I have going now is just not an option. It was way too much work to get here and seems quite a bit easier to just keep this rolling. At this point, I'm not sure I could even eat 1/2 of what I used to "Order" at those burger joints. And I'm too embarrassed to even mention that gluttony. A-Jay

Getting back in shape
Moderation in all things might be key ~ Think portion control. However leaning well into the 'healthy side' more often than not can set us up for success in the long run. "Staying in shape" for me is considerably less arduous, than getting super soft and having to 'fix it'. So I'm very happy doing whatever I need to do to support that deal. Besides, NOTHING tastes as good as being Fit & Lean feels. #confidencerules A-Jay

Current Favorite Mid - Priced Hard Jerk Bait (2 ft ~ 5 ft. running depth) ?
I'm a "Vision 110 Guy". But to the OP, The 110's run too deep to be an applicable part of this thread. But they still catch a few for me. A-Jay

Why Do You Use Braid?
OH Yea ~ Well I hate braid ! (Pee Wee Herman Voice) (except on all my spinning gear) A-Jay

Using additional weight with braid to leader?
Got it ~ Sounds like you're on the right track then. Maybe 'Power Shot'. Using a 'Heavier than normal' drop shot weight. Like 3/8, 1/2 oz or more, on your drop shot with a bait that won't spin and twist up your line. A-Jay

Working to Stay Lean ~
Cool ~ Sounds like you're in a nice groove and have plenty of momentum moving forward. Looking forward to hearing more good things. Yea the sets/reps were sort of paramount to volume training. Started out running 40/30/20/15/10/10/10. Some of the exercises were pretty interesting at those numbers. Plenty warmed up, that's for sure. Eventually dropped it to 30/20/15/12/10/10 but even then, on a Total body deal, I felt like I was just surviving. Better now though. Push Day Tomorrow. See how that goes. A-Jay

Working to Stay Lean ~
I am but I'm taking a break from all that isolation work. Ran it for a time and At first I loved it. Then it seemed to 'get stale'. I just wasn't feeling like I was 'doing enough' and 8 -10 sets of the same exercise is pretty boring. I may go back to it but for now, I'm back to doing all 'the wrong exercises '. You know, the ones that work. I'm also eating 'more'. How's goes the battle for you ? A-Jay

Using additional weight with braid to leader?
I also fish light braid & leader on spinning gear. Leaders for me are almost always at least 20 ft long and can be FC or mono. Line sag is usually not a problem for me unless it's very pronounced; making strike detection a little harder. Most times that happens when I am fishing 'cross wind'. I cannot effectively fish ANY BAIT with a strong crosswind – cannot do it – tried as I may – just hate it. So I’m either casting straight downwind or into the wind – either way, I can feel my bait, there’s no big sag or bend in my line and most importantly, I catch fish. So when deciding where & how to position my rig, I’m generally either getting the wind right off the bow or right off the stern. Now that’s all well & good but if the structure I want to fish doesn’t offer an area that is 10 or 11 feet deep for me to Talon down into – I’m pretty much stuck doing the one-legged trolling motor dance the whole time – it’s a skill and a struggle at times. I'm running a Fortrex (no spot lock) – but I’m not bitter. A-Jay

Megabass Dark Sleeper versus Tube - When/Why?
In my quest for bulbus brown bass, these two baits are pretty close to interchangeable. I fish them both on the same gear, in similar situations/conditions and even utilized the same short / twitchy, stop & go retrieve. Both boxes contain the same colors for the most part. (I like to match the bottom color) There may be two 'small' (and I do mean small) differences in my mind. The DS might be a more 'realistic' goby imitator and there are days where for whatever reason, that seems to matter. And the second revolves around 'vibration'. Even though it's pretty small, the DS does have the little paddle tail that a tube obviously does not. While I certainly can't feel it working, I'm sure it put's out something the fish can 'feel'. Sounds like a good 'challenge' on the water. DS vs The tube . . . . ***supplemental info ~ Tube Tips & Tricks. Slipping a small glass jig rattle into a tube can help get bites. I use a small section of a foam ear plug to hold it in place. The foam can also be used by itself. Slathering it with a little (ok a lot) of Megastrike helps with installation and makes that deal very tasty. To the bass I mean. A-Jay

Is A Rubber Landing Net Worth It?
This is my stance as well. I am almost always fishing for 'specific' fish, which are sort of hard to come by and routinely require quite a bit of time to find & catch. The minute it might take to remove a treble hook bait from my net, pales in comparison. I need to be a Net Ninja and the light weight deal is a means to that end. YMMV A-Jay

Getting back in shape
I can say the same thing about Resistance Bands. For Years, I believed they would not be an effective tool in my training, despite never really trying them. I could not have been more off base. Now the bands are part of Every pre-workout Warm up, as well as being used in several different applications of the training itself. Done with purpose, they get the job done while being super safe. Something I can totally appreciate, especially as a 'veteran trainer' Who Knew ? A-Jay

7 Weeks and a wake up. Although at this point, that might be a tad optimistic. I'm sticking with it. (btw that's the North Shore of Lake Superior ~ not Lake Menderchuck) A-Jay

Uncommon bladed jig trailers...
Like this ~ A-Jay When these first came out, I had some early success with them so of course I ended up with something close to a life time supply. For wherever reason (may have been the rage tail introduction) they sort of fell out of favor. As much success as you've had with that Devil spear trailer, I am determined to give it another go this season. If & when there's success, you'll know. Thanks A-Jay

Line for a swimbait rod
40 lb braid on your rig should be effective, unless you're in super slop then the 65 might be called for. A-Jay

Line for a swimbait rod
I can agree that there's any number of ways to catch giant bass. Haven't viewed any Milliken on YT, however in my world A-Rigs & Swimbaits are not fished on the same gear. Swimbaits for big largemouth are presented with a 300 size reel, (Calcutta D or Tranx) filled with 20-25 lb FC, mounted on a H rod. These fish are hard to hook, fight and finally put in the net, undersized gear will not help. A-Jay

Line for a swimbait rod
I don't have that reel but the published line capacity for it is 14/100, 16/90. Regardless of which line you select, "40# (10lb ED) and a 65# (16lb ED)" A good cast with almost any swimbait over an ounce, will not leave you much in the way of line left or IPT (inches per turn) as the spool diameter will be pretty small at that point. This becomes a concern if & when the fish you're looking to catch, strikes way out on the end of the cast. If the fish comes at you, catching up with her to get the hook in or even keep it in can get a little dicey. IMO, a MH rod and a that size reel is mostly suited to fairly small swimbaits at best. Most 'swimbaiters' use gear that can & will present larger baits effectively and reels with a bit more line capacity; for the reason noted above. A-Jay
