  1. never used them, but i used something similar...i just T-Rig them and give retreive/fall approach I T-Rig them on a 3/0 worm hook with a 1/8 ounce tungsten weight. The I use the retrieve fall approach. Works great in a lot of different scenarios. Have heard the magnums work good on ledges, haven't tried that yet though.
  2. Another thing to remember is that it might not start "peeing" until the thermostats open up when it warms up. Some motors in some conditions don't start peeing for several minutes.
  3. I would say it depends on the water you fish. The SI is nice I've heard, but the HDS-5 has a superb 2D sonar. It has broadband built-in and the standard 2D display is far superior to the HB IMO. If you fish places where SI will really benefit you , then I'd go with the HB. Lowrance has their version of SI coming out soon, but the cost is still unknown.
  4. Way to go, nothing like fishing with a youngster to really make a trip special....
  5. What is the water temp if you are catching them on top all day? I tried a few weeks ago and it was already almost 88 deg water temp in 13' of water at around 7am. That's deep crankin and c rigging time for me. Water temp can get up to 90 degrees. But the bass will still come up out of the grass and nail topwaters. On Guntersville big bass usually do one of two things when it gets hot. They bury themselves in the grass, the go deep on ledges in the main channel. Some will hide under docks but thats a distant 3rd. The ones that go into the grass will still come up for things on the surface. This time of year the schoolers seem to get really active the hotter it gets. A really hot, humid day, the kind that has a tendency to spawn afternoon storms will get the schoolers really active throughout the day. You aren't going to get the big ones schooling like that, but catching 75-100 smaller ones is a lot of fun too.
  6. My mercury throws a "Neutral Overspeed Fault" if you take it to more than 2k rpm in neutral.
  7. I like to start fresh, don't know why just do.
  8. Schooling is still crazy these days. Went out on Sat and Sun. Only caught ~65 on Sat, most in the 1-3 lb range. Sunday we had some weather coming in and once it passed, the sun came out and the wind died down and the fish really got turned on. Ended up catching over 100. The size got a lot better too. We ran into schools of 3-5 lbers. There were times you'd bring one to the boat and look down and see several others following along. That's fun when they're small, it really gets your heart racing when they start pushing 3-5 lb size. My best tactic right now is swimming a big anaconda through the grass until they start schooling on top, I then grab my pop-r and go to town. Sometimes the school will only be active for a few minutes. Sometimes they are active for hours. At one point we had would appeared to be 3 large schools around the boat. I had to have caught a fish on every cast for more than 20 casts. You would cast it out and get hit over and over the whole way back to the boat. Even had a couple doubles on a spook. All in all it was a great day and I wished I had been in a tournament as our best 5 went around the 26lb mark. Ofcourse, we'd never catch that many in a tournament! Didn't take as many pics as I should have, but when the fish are biting like that, you don't stop to take pics!
  9. Thats a pretty lame excuse. If a person takes me out on their boat, I think I should atleast offer to pay for part of the gas even if they were going fishing anyway. I know that when I take someone with me I often do burn more gas. I, as the boater, feel somewhat obligated to get them on fish and that usually means driving more than I regularly would. Utlimately if someone is nice enough to take you on the boat, you are sharing in the fun derived from that trip and thus should share in the expense the trip cost. Its not only the fair way to do it, its the right thing to do. And, reading the story, the guy did more than just refuse to pay for gas. While we may not have the whole story, most of what was said isn't a gray area. It sounds pretty cut and dry. How do you justify taking a guys food and drink? If that behavior is okay with you, so be it, to each his own. That person wouldn't go fishing with me again. And frankly, if that behavior is no big deal to you, I wouldn't want you on my boat either.
  10. Thats what I would try to do first. Basically you are getting that message because Windows has determined that it needs a swap file larger than 23 gb, that doesn't mean its using that much, but its just calculated that it needs more than that. You will likely have several gigs tied up in things like Temporary Internet Files, possibly the recycle bin. You will probably have software installed that you don't run anymore. That's one of the things I've noticed in my years dealing with computers, there's no such thing as too big whne it comes to hard drive space. People will just leave more crap on their computers wyhen they have large hard drives because they don't have to clear it off. In your start menu under Accessories -> Ssytem Tools is the Disk Cleanup utility. That can be a good place to start, but its not as good as some of the third party tools that are available. Before I did that I'd make a backup of my disk, or atleast a restore point in case you delete something you don't intend.
  11. Zoom recommends 6/0 or larger.
  12. Your problem can be helped by addin gmore RAM, but that may not be enough. Virtual memory is disk space the OS uses as memory. No computer has enough RAM to run the OS completely in memory, they use alot of ram. So that's solved by taking the things that aren't currently being used and writing them to the disk so that your actual memory space can be used by active programs because its much faster. Adding RAM might help reduce the amount of disk space you need, but usually that error message is a result of the hard drive getting too full and adding RAM isn't going to solve it even if it does help overall performance. You really have 2 solutions. Clean the disk to free up space (you will be suprised at how much temporary junk is left on the computer) or buy a bigger hard drive. Ultimately it all boils down to needing more free hard drive space. I wouldn't go messing with the virual memory settings. Windows almost always does a better job of handling that than a person does. It actual has some interesting algorithms it uses to determine how much space to reservce for swap files.
  13. Me some moons ago: the lake is two hours away, I 'll be up by 4 AM to be there at sunrise Me now: the lake is two hours away, I 'll be up at 8:00 ? ...... let 's make it 8:30 AM, we 'll be at the lake by 10:30 - 11:00 AM, we are in no rush. As Ellesar pointed out above, the best time period for "big" bass normally takes place during "midday" (that is a fact). I admit to missing the splendor of watching the birth of the day, but there's equal beauty at dusk, watching the day close out. Roger I'd do that more myself Roger, but my 4 year old has me conditioned to get up early! I don't get to sleep very late even if I don't go fishing, figure if I'm up I might as well go fishing.
  14. We're going up next friday and coming back on Sat, so its just an overnight thnig. Our 4 year old will stay with his "ga ga" one noght, but two would be pushing it. We went there as a pre-honeymoon trip when we got married 7 years ago so we figured we go back for our anniversary.
  15. Thats for both of us. She will buy a Coach purse so that will be about $300.00. So I will probably only have around $900 or so to spend 8-)
  16. All the guides will say that the best time is from 10am to 2pm on Guntersville right now, atleast for the big fish. I guess I'm a traditionalist in that I think I need to be there at sunrise. Plus I can be home by noon and have the rest of the day to do all the other things that come up on weekends.
  17. I like to be on the water as the sun comes up. That being said, the availability of the topwater bite where I fish changes throughout the year. Right now you can catch fish on topwater all day long. In fact, right now, my Pop-r and my spook are my search baits. I will still throw a worm if I'm not getting hits someplace to see if there is anything active down in the grass, but I will catch more and bigger fish on top right now.
  18. I can only speak for what I've seen on Lake Guntersville, but the big fish usually do one of two things. Some go deep on ledges. Some go deep into grass. Even with the water temp breaking the 90 degree mark, you can find some big fish by flipping grass in 5-8 ft of water. You can also find them in 15-30 ft of water on river ledges.
  19. http://www.secretweaponlures.com/ Maybe he meant one of those? : ;D
  20. Tourny results might say something about size, but not numbers. I can go fish and tourny tomorrow, catch over 100 fish, and have nothing to weigh. That's the nature of some fishing and the way schooling is going on at Guntersville right now, that can be easy to do. So to say its best for numbers AND size is incorrect IMO. I can often catch bigger fish by using a worm in the grass, but some days that's just not true. From my perspective fish like different things at different times for lots of different reasons. I can tell you this much as well, while on certain part of Guntersville (just as an example) I can catch bigger and more fish on top. I can travel a few miles down the lake and catch bigger and more fish on worms. All of this is over grass, but there's more to the pattern than just "over grass".
  21. that we are going away for a night because we need some "us" time away from the kids. So, naturally, I ask where we are going fishing. That didn't turn out to well. So she decides we are going to Nashville to the Gaylord Hotel and the next day we can go to Opry Mills mall. You know what's in that mall? Bass Pro Shops! Then she tells me we can't spend more than about $1200.00 while we are there. I was thinking that this whole thing was going to be a bust until she gave me the details. I now fully agree that we need a romantic weekend away from the kids at Bass Pro Shops... err... I mean Gaylord Opryland Hotel and the Opry Mills!
  22. Try the "Petey Rig" for flukes, I've had success with this. It seems like, and I can't say its true scientifiically, but I get bigger fish rigging it like this. Basically the Petey rig is pegging a weight about 8 inches about the hook. It lets the fluke get down in the grass and works like a worm through the grass. I've tried using swimbait hooks and regular non-pegged weights and haven't had as much success as I have with this method.
  23. Usually...
  24. Zona just finished filming an episode of WGFS where they caught 9 fish on camera that estimated weighing a combined 4800 to 5100 lbs. He had a few pics on twitter. Gotta be a blast to catch.
