Ok I'll explain it further. The basses eyes change faster to the changing light conditions than the bait fishes eyes making them easy prey in the dusk to dawn early morning and light to dark conditions in the evenings. The bass attack is on during these times. Now the noon time bite. The plant life gives off plankton which the bait fish come out of hiding to feed on. Thus the noon time bass attack. These is another bite on for bass after things settle down in the evening around 9:30/10:00pm it starts. I been taught this by my mentor. There is no wrong time to fish as said above. But there's more of a window of opportunity when the bass attack time happens.

I have a broken tip fly rod that's no longer good that I put a new tip on with a ul spinning reel. I can cast a float n fly, or a rattle bobber with a 1" chartreuse grub for crappie action. I broke the norm with this setup but it's fun to use. I have the mini cranks to use with it too. I just purchased the misses and her coworker a plhger ul rod with a zebco ul reel to take them pan fishing. Fish and save, had it all.

To the OP I would suggest on getting; Rebel POPR SPOOK Rapala f7 orginal floater in blue Bomber redapplecraw, firecraw, browncraw. Mepps Anglia #3 silver blade gray tail. Joe's fly 1/4oz firetiger apache & blackgnat. Mann's classic 1/4oz gold Colorado blade white spinner bait. Manned classic 1/4oz gold Colorado blade chartreuse . This will get you up and running. Or use what ever you have.

On a day I start out by varying my lures till I get action. It can happen sooner on some days and tougher on others. My fishing time has been limited(disabled) so I need to figure out the pattern on what works quickly. Just because we know the place day to day it can change. I also notice in fishing the same smaller places what was a hot lure last year isn't that hot this year. I find knowing this I rotate my lures often to the dry dock for a while. I try to throw something old and mix it up with some newer different stuff. I also like testing lures to see if they catch fish or not. Being retired stinks sometimes. I break up the boredom by fishing. On a slow day I chuck lures checking them to see how they run and trying different presentations when I can see them. The bottom line is bass fishing keeps me occupied and sane.

Blue Cat = great hush puppies? Nothing like fresh fish on a wood fire naked. Gutted, salted, peppered and some lemon. I love catfish.

I use locking snap swivels.I don't ask anybody what's hot today. I like to figure it out by my own tactics. I find my system of varying my lure colors and sizes works. Then it's my secret if I was a pro.

I fished for bass in the evenings first. There were many different sized bass. Nothing over 4 to 5#. In the morning like really early while it's dark to light. I find the bass are bigger plus there is no crowd churning up the water. It's dead quiet. In the evening there are the bugs. It's too cold in the early mornings for bugs.

This year instead of the hot jeans I'm going with the light thin camos. With a sleeveless shirt. I need to dress really cooler.

We help each other become better fisherman. What lure is hot in your area might be hotter at another place too. Maybe it's a different presentation. We need fresh blood to get involved and post here. Stay fishing it's your first one. You should be motivated more to look for a bigger bass. Don't let where your located stop you. Do not let this one big bass limit you on having even bigger success. I caught many probably many hundreds of 3# to 6# bass. I was relaxing, enjoying nature when my of 10# hit. It has changed my life. Now I want to break my PB and possibly break the state record. I'm more serious when I fish now. The game has changed my drive has increased. Now I want the bigger ones.

It depends how much use it sees. I retire my snap swivels and carolina rig after every large bass. Or every night. Keep your knots tight and fresh.

The book on big bass is good I just purchased it. I'm thinking any more knowledge is good. A 12" worm will also catch you a 13" fish. Big bait big bass is true somewhat. All I can add is when the bite is on and it slows down during the day upside your lure. Example; I'm throwing a mepps #3 and catching bass after bass. Different smaller sizes. The bite stops. I switch to a #4 or #5 Mepps inline the same colors and I find the fish are bigger. To Me the bigger fish come in closer when the smaller fish are biting scaring the smaller ones away. It seems they don't strike the smaller lure. During the early evening the color your using changes from natural colors to brighter colors as it gets darker. Example, I'm throwing a Joe's fly in blackgnat the bite is on. As it gets darker the bite stops. I switch to a Joe's fly in firetiger apache and land a few more fish till it's dark. Do this in reverse for the dark early am to dawn. Go from brighter colors as the sky lights up then natural colors as the sun is up. My PB of 10# was caught at 5am on chartreuse as the night turned to day. It was twilight. When your in a situation when the bite stops try my suggestions. To catch DD size bass first you need to be constant at catching any bass. The more you fish the more you will learn. Keep a log for every trip. Write it all down. Lure size, type, presentation, speed, colors. Record the moon phases. When the bass are larger there main diet is craws and sunnies. Go with big worms, larger cranks, sunfish and perch lures.

When I think back to the old days its watching Jerry McKinnis in the Fishing Hole TV show that took bass fishing to a whole new level.

I took apart a '40's penn model 49 reel to clean and lube it. I found a very similar design to the bait casters of today. Here we are many decades later the same similiar design is still used.

I thought about that after I released them. These were so fat two hands couldn't reach around them and touch fingers.My problem is I want to keep my fishing holes a secret. Another evening during the full moon phases I caught a crappie that was the size of a 5 gallon bucket lid. Probably another record fish. I hear ya about the fight with the pike.

Back in them there days my ZEBCO 202 or 33 would last one season fishing freshwater and saltwater. We wore them out. I had a 5'6" stiff saltwater rod with the ZEBCO on it. Using a 1oz sinker I could empty the zebco reel when casting it. I miss those days. We didn't have much money in them there days. We caught flounder, blue fish, snapper & harbor blues, strippers and ate them. I left out porgies and weak fish too.

I been sticking with my copolymer line now for decades now. Now my fishing education and skills sometimes I go my own direction. I use a 17lb copolymer line on my main line on my Carolina rig/ worm rod setup. I vary my plastics fall rate by using a heavier test line than a lighter pound test. Right now it's 17lb test on the 24" leader. I have used 20#. This style of using a heavier test leader has been done before for decades.
