1964, 12' Jon Boat restoration
Thanks everyone! No, I still don't know the make of the boat, only that it's a 1964. As for the paint , I used all interlux products from beginning to end. Etching primers, solvent washes, thinners, and base coat primer. The actual color is Brightside polyurethane in fire red. On the bottom, transom and footrests, I used herculiner (blk) I used brightside because Together the technologies create a one-part polyurethane which gives the look of a two-part polyurethane with the application ease of a one-part enamel. Oh yea, I opted to use a brush as opposed to a roller because of all the angles and tight spaces. Thanks again for all your comments

1964, 12' Jon Boat restoration
This is the 1964 jon boat that I bought w/ trailer for $450. Took about 35-40 hours to restore. 12' long with xtra deep gunnels. Extremely stable for a jon boat. Boat stands me $1200 with 2 new monster batt's, motor, trailer tires and bearings, etc. Herculiner (truck bed liner) used for bottom, transom and foot rests. Paint is interlux brightside. purchase day an idea of how thick the old carpet glue was. Removed it w/ orbital sander and 40 grit paper primer coats carpet, floors, paint seats, handles and logo

early morning swim baits
slightly off topic but the storm baits sell very well around here (RI) but they are used for stripers in the bay. They get so thick that they will hit anything. The storm sB's last relatively well and are very hassle free. long casting also.

Why do fish "yawn?"
ps- an Oscars slime coat makes a pickerel look dry! It's like snot!

Why do fish "yawn?"
Muddpuppy- I had him in a 30 gal then a 55 gal then an 80 gal. I n each tank, he would grow till he was just big enough to still be able to turn around. Now he's in this monster tank and he has pretty much maxxed bout on growing. He is by far the biggest Oscar I've seen yet. I have seen many close to his size though. Being 9 yrs old now, I think he is definately done!

Why do fish "yawn?"
fishingrulz- the oscar chews his food in his throat with "crushers" (just like larry largemouth), he has no teeth. then he expels whats leftover through his gills

Why do fish "yawn?"
I think mudpuppy has the closest guess yet. My oscar yawns frequently, mostly , it seems, to move water by the gills but he also does it while eating. If I feed him pellets (as opposed to feeder fish & crays) he crushes them in his throat and after he swallows he does the yawn thing and it expels leftover pellet dust out his gill plates. (thats why pellets make for a dirty tank eventually (too much rotting food waste in the gravel).

Why do fish "yawn?"
But of course!!! We catch him a couple times each winter when things get tough. We have what we call the "house" rod. It's the last 2 1/2 feet of a 7wgt fly rod w/ a shimano ax/uls reel. I weigh him when we catch him just to see his yr to yr growth and although he hasnt gained or grown in about 4 years, it's just another way to ensure he's still healthy.

Why do fish "yawn?"
I have 1 1lb 6 oz Oscar in 125 gallon tank and he yawns all the time. I think it serves the same purpose as it does with us. Yawning and stretching increase blood circulation. I also think it might bring a good amount of oxygen across the gill plates. But what do I know??? lol

Busy ramp...your thoughts?
Just a point * I have never consumed alchohol and operated my jetskis. Nor has anyone I've ever let ride one * more than 1 of my fishing partners drink regularly while bass fishing although I sustain, I do indulge in the occasional bone.(yea, sue me) *All this said, I also can load both skis just as quickly as it takes to load my 21'. There is a system to unloading/loading ANY vehicle. Having a system for your personal task and executing it are far more important in my opinion than the actual type of craft being moved. A guy w/ a kayak on his roof can be more of a hassle than a bass boat if hes an absolute moron, and vise versa.

Busy ramp...your thoughts?
unfortunately, I own 3 boats and 2 jetski's. Sorry I don't qualify to be treated like a human being. I treat others like I wish to be treated and I am very quick on the ramp. I've spent plenty of time helping and educating folks on the ramps also. The fact that I also enjoy P.W.C. shouldn't make me a target for unsolicited violence. I also fish. SO what now?? Do we just armwrestle? Treat people on an individual basis. If I approach the ramp next weekend at 60 in my Ranger, should the guy I swamp beat the ***** out of the next guy that comes along with a bass boat??

Busy ramp...your thoughts?
In RI, jet skiers have to take a mandatory safety course and become "liscenced". It blows my mind though that my 16 yr old niece could legally buy a 57 foot hattaras and start guiding it through the channel. Never mind the fact that the state could stand to make a little money with a safety course and liscencing program. As for the ramp situation, I think we just need to help educate those who don't understand or realize a thing called "ramp etiquette"

Another loading question
the reservoir I live on is the back up to our main reservoir. It is landowner access only and electric motor only. As far as dropping motor for one quick second to push boat up,.......That'll get youy arrested here! Can't even have a gas motor on the boat, never mind in the water.

Sunnies For Bait
I checked regs here in Rhode Island and it doesn't say either way. Assuming that would make it legal here.

Boat durability
I agree with Gambler. The gel coat should not chip that easily unless perhaps if you drive 60 down the dirt/gravel roads. Was this a fairly inexpensive 18.5' boat? Sometimes you get what you pay for and this is one of the reasons they dont charge the same for every boat. Different companies use different steps, materials and finishes. EX: I know I can get a 20' bayliner for less than 1/2 the price of a 20' boston whaler. The whaler will be here in 10 yrs with proper care but the bayliner , even with proper care,is very likely to fall apart. I would go to the dealer and see if there are any other 2 yr old boats there and see if they are sustaining the same type of damage. Good luck

FISHING GODS
The gods,....oh, the gods. Myu partner and I have been long time practitioners of'superstitious behavior. We NEVER wear matching socks, and we NEVER talk on the ride to the lake about how we are gonna "smoke 'em" cause the conditions are sooo on! Anyone else have any quirks?

Hot sun, where do the bass go?
ok, let's all play it safe. When the sun is high, or not, and the water is warm, or not, the bass like to stay in the pond. Where and why? Gonna have to ask a bass that one personally! lol

Make your own lures?
I currently hold a patent for a saltwater bluefish plug that combines the the steel leader with a plug that slides ON the leader. This allows you to grab the plug then slide it up the leader till it hits the swivel, then you lift the fish from there. This keeps your hands away from the teeth. The plug itself is very basic. When blues are boiling on top, they will hit anything that is splashing across the top of the school of baitfish. These will be marketed as a "2 in 1" lure for basically the same price as a leader. We supplied 8 boats with them last year for a product review and they flipped out! Should be on the shelves by Oct.

Can you name this boat?
I have 2 vin tags on the boat and the last 2 digits are "64"!!!!! This boat is over 40 yrs old!!! Holy crap. Still very structurally sound. I guess I'll have to ask the registry the make when I get it registered.
