The complaints regarding the mag brake are overblown, in my opinion. I was out yesterday with my STX. Changing conditions between no wind, light wind, heavy wind and various baits. I set the cast control knob once and the mag brake exactly ... ONCE! For $30.00 more, you are getting a better spool and treatments which will increase the longevity of the reel.

Some of the bearings are upgraded, the drive and pinion gears are upgraded, two other gears are upgraded and one other thing that is slipping my mind at the moment but it's shown on the video. I concede. I didn't look it up; just commenting on what I saw. Upgraded gears is a suprising mod; most spin-off reels just sport an upgraded spool, handle, and paint job. Bearings are like a lot of other things in life, they don't matter until they stop working and that generally happens at the most inopportune time.

There is at least 1 JDM Revo in the States. Not the one Raul has shown us, however. Somewhat less, modded, shall we say?

I worked in the outdoor sports dept of one of the larger sporting goods chains. If someone came in and wanted to buy a Shimano, he walked out with a Shimano. If someone came in and wanted to buy an Abu, he walked out with an Abu. Now, if someone came in and asked what's the best reel for "X" application. They got the best information I could provide based upon experience and product knowledge. My preferences are for Abu and Daiwa but if answer was Shimano, Penn or Quantum, that's what the customer got. Out of all the tackle I sold, 1 guy came back to complain and I made sure he got his money back and discount on the new reel. I also scored 2 100% ratings from secret shoppers, for what that was worth. I've been fishing for a bit more than 35 years. I've never asked for anything except quality tackle and value for my dollar.

What? I think you'll find that the recommendations on this Forum are quite helpful when choosing a reel. My point is simply this, there are people who regardless of a request for a helpful response will provide one more in line with their personal allegiance. Shimano is not always the answer. Diawa is not always the answer. There are also people who would also keep their sponsorships a bit mysterious. There are others who make it known with every response.

You shouldn't allow the opinions of others to influence your choices in tackle. Shimano, Daiwa, Abu, Quantum included.

I am simply amazed at the amount of tackle. By the time your finished deciding what you're going to throw, it must be time to leave the lake!

It's a Japanese Domestic Market rod. Daiwa USA won't have info on the rod.

about your only recourse would be to contact one of the Japanese vendors to check on parts availability.

Your analysis is about 98% accurate. The other 2% being the chance of reel mechanical failure. If that occurs when you're fighting a fish, all bets are off. Not all $100.00 reels are created equal. The Revo S, however, is probably the reliable.

The Advantage has a sealed drag system, the Tierra does not. I'm going into my second season with been the Advantage, last year with the 2500, this year with the 2000. You can't go wrong with either reel actually but for $25.00, you're probably better off with the Advantage.

Sunline Machinegun Cast 16 or 20, Berkeley New Radial Braid 30 lb test. If the guides are quality, there should not be an issue.

She immediately told me to hop back in the car and took me to the nearest tackle shop for a suitable replacement.

I could have sworn someone here was complaining about a delay in receiving the Wiley X promotion glasses. Just wanted to say, I got mine yesterday and it took about 6 weeks. The glasses are actually pretty nice and come with a hard shell case, a couple of lanyards, a cleaning cloth and a sticker. Not too bad for $6.95, considering I was going to buy the reel anyway.

My "panic" box is my regular box with the baits I fish year long, I never panic, I fish with the same tried and true .... in a different manner. I would have to agree. My starting lineup is what I know will produce the most under a set of circumstances, more often than not. What? I'm supposed to give the fish a handicap? If you see me with a Red Eye spoon tied on, it's Lawyers, Guns and Money time.

;D Mag braking was introduced in the early 80's to attract those who have trouble knowing how to thumb a reel properly towards the end of the cast. Interesting that the STX uses it as it's main brake system, something that was originally designed in the early 80's for those who aren't real good at thumb braking. BTW, Most Patriarch users I know keep the mag brakes off most of the time and only use them throwing small baits or high profile baits into the wind. Two things which make baitcasting more difficult than it has to be: Only set the cast control loose enough so the bait just start to fall under it's own weight. Thumb it.

If you want the reel for flippin', save yourself $100.00 and purchase the REVO S, it's all you need. If you want it for pitchin' and flippin', purchase the STX. If you don't want to have to learn to use a reel properly, purchase a Zebco 33, no worries at all. The Patriarch brake system is like wearing suspenders and a belt. Great for safety engineers, not practical for a fireman.
