No More Twinkies...
I've never understood how any board approves pay raises for upper level management when a company is going into the hopper, or worse, facing bankruptcy. Having said that, if the CEO agreed to work for free, the money saved wouldn't come close to what it would take to save the company. It's no comment about fairness. It's simple reality.

What Do You Guys Think Of This Boat? Buy Or Keep Looking? *updated*
Your main concern should be the transom. The problem with older fiberglass boats is the transom of those that have a plywood core encased in fiberglass. If water gets into it via mounting holes and holes cut for drains, intakes, etc., the wood can and will rot.

Years ago hockey was the bloodiest sport. Most of it being from the goalies. Heck it was so bad, players got transfusions between shifts. OK, that's a bit of a stretch. All you need to know is that goalies did not wear masks during that era. I'm not sure if Gerry Cheevers was the first to wear a mask, but it was unique. It was white, and every time the mask got hit with a puck stitches were painted onto the mask in the area where it was hit.

I'm A Baaad Man
1. It was bad enough when I was notified that three people unfriended me not only once, but it has happened several times since. I've got to be in negative numbers. 2. If that wasn't bad enough, I was offerred a copy of my criminal record. 3. To add insult to injury, I can also get a free copy of my "concealed carry" report. With a track record like 1 and 2, why should I waste my time with number 3?

What Do You Guys Think Of This Boat? Buy Or Keep Looking? *updated*
The price seems reasonable to me, provided the motor is sound, maybe more than reasonable. The rust on the trailer is of some concern. In the photos, it appears to be more of a cosmetic issue, but be sure to carefully check the areas where the springs are mounted and the tongue. where the hitch is mounted, and where the tongue attaches to the frame. The problem is not surface rust. It's what may be hiding inside the frame tubing.

Humminbird 1198C Si Combo
I'd use a ram mount. Which mount you need depends on where you want to mount it, and the configuration of your boat. The first image is the mount in my Z-7. It has the two inch ball pivots. The second is a swing arm mount on my Z-8. There was no good place to mount the ball type of swivel. Keep in mind, the ball type of mount has much more adjustability, while the swing arm is much stronger. Also, the more nearly vertical you keep the center section, the better. If it's horizontal, then there is a lot of leverage which can cause the setting to go out of adjustment if you are pounding through a nasty chop. There may be a ten dollar difference in the cost, so economics should not factor into which to use.

Rude Fishermen Rant
Rude fisherman? Say it isn't so. Seriously, I consider that to be more inconsiderate than some juvenile jet skiers, who in a lake or pond a mile or more wide, have to pass within a hundred feet of someone fishing along the shore.

Another Oil Thread
I'm familiar with the prices of fiberglass, and it seems to work like this with the companies that produce gel coats, resins, etc. Whenever there is a significant jump in the price of oil per barrel, I get a notice from my vendor informing me that due to the increase in petroleum prices there will be a five percent or seven percent increase in the prices of their product(s). The problem is that when petroleum prices drop, I never get a notice of price decreases due to a drop in raw material prices. Consequently, a five gallon pail of gel coat which once cost about eighty dollars is now close to two hundred and fifty dollars. That is a three fold increase in price during the past seven or eight years. It seems that in many cases the price adjusting of products is like a ratchet wrench. It only works one way.

I can fit my work schedule around my fishing, or anything else I might choose to do. Why do today what can be put off 'til tomorrow, if today is a good fishing day.

Thanks for the update. When I first saw this thread it gave me pause. While it's tough to be without electricity, it was a relief to see that was his problem rather than a health issue.

Filed Under The No Good Deed Goes Unpunished Department.
It is common, at least around here for families who lost a loved one to request donations to this or that charity in lieu of flowers. Recently we have done as requested. But, here's the rub. We are now getting daily phone calls from these charities. Their gimmick is to receive the donation, then notify the family that a donation was made to said charity by (fill in the blank) in memory of the deceased. They then have your name, and the calls begin. From now on, when we make a gift to a charity it will be with a money order, noted in memory of so and so, but with no way for the charity to begin hounding us. Call me an old grouch, grumpy, or whatever you wish, but it's enough to discourage a person from trying to help out.

Ram Mount For Hds8?
Here's the photo of the wiring, and the "covers" which came with the unit. I forgot that you are installing a Lowrance, but I would imagine they provide something similar with their unit. You could put a small bead of silicone sealant on the edges of the top and sides to make it more water repellant, but I don't feel it's necessary.

Ram Mount For Hds8?
One more suggestion. Where I attached the Ram Mount on the white boat is not quite flat. To make a neat install, I disassembled the mount so that I could attach the ball with the mounting flange without the rest of the assembly hanging on it. Once the holes were drilled, prior to bolting the flange to the console, I put a quarter inch bead of white silicone sealant just inside the outer edge. Then I ran the bolts through the mount, and hung it onto the console, and snugged down the bolts and nuts until the silicone just starte to ooze from beneath the flange on the mount. Using my finger, I removed the excess "ooze", leaving a small, concave radius between the mount and the surface. Then, it was left for a day or more, which allowed the silicone to set up. Once the silicone was completely set, the assembly was properly tightend down. This results in a form fitting silicone "washer" that cannot be squeezed out.

Ram Mount For Hds8?
No plywood was needed. Though it is a 1/4 to 3/8 thick, it is plenty strong to support the 898. One note. Using a standard twist drill will chip the gel coat. The instructions recommend starting with a small bit, then using progressively larger bits until you get the size hole needed for the fastenings. That is not foolproof. Buy a brad point drill bit, of the proper size, and go slowly with it. The brad point keeps the bit located, and the spurs on the outer edge of the bit will be less likely to "lift" on the gel coat. Most major hardware stores should carry them. I got mine at Home Depot. Another option is to start with a small hole, then use a countersink to enlarge the outer edge of the hole enough so the next larger bit does not contact the gel coat. Alternate between the countersink and the larger drill bits. Even the brad point drill is not perfect, but it is definitely less likely to chip the gel coat. As far as making the wiring watertight where it passes through the fiberglass, it isn't. It doesn't need to be, but there are parts that come with the unit to help the wiring direct water away from hole. It works like a "weatherhead" where power or phone lines enter a building. It's a small plastic cover which goes over the wiring to finish the install. It is solid on the top and sides with slots in the bottom for the wiring to pass through. When water gets on the cables, gravity pulls the water away from the hole. The top of the cover fits snugly against the side of the console and sheds spray and rain away from the hole. Scroll up the thread, back to one of my prior posts, you can see the three wires that go to the console and the cover which will come with the mounting hardware provided. Photobucket is down, so I cannot access enlarged images at this time.

Dumb Things You Have Said Or Done
I'm going to offer some advice to help you avoid a future indignity. When you meet two women, particularly sisters, never ask which is the older sister. Ask which is the younger.

Fuel Question
I googled two cycle fuel mix in automobile engines a couple of weeks ago, prompted by a similar post. The main problem had to do with its effect on catalytic converters. But none said how much oil it would take to gum up a converter. Is it a tablespoon, a quart or what? Not knowing for sure, I'd make sure it was treated with a fuel stabilizer and run it in my lawnmowers next year. They are carburetor engines, and have no sensors, injectors, or converters to foul up.

Mold
You do not have to feel wetness/dampness for mold to grow. In fact, mold will not form when excessive moisture is present. Mold is a fungus, which can only form within certain moisture and temperature ranges. Do you keep your boat drained of water in the bilge? It doesn't take much water to "humidify" any closed compartments sufficiently to allow mold to form. Be sure to drain the boat after every use. Elevate the bow of the boat to ensure that any water in the hull flows to the stern, and out the drain.
