Eastern Ma & New England Area Fishing Reports
That would be a problem. But, at three weeks away the playoffs should be down to Sunday games. There will be two playoff games on both Saturday and Sunday of this week. Next week will be the same. The following week should be down to the division championship games on Sunday the 22nd, and then the Super Bowl on the first Sunday in February. February 5th.

Star Wars Rogue One - Anybody See It?
I have been a Star Wars fan since A New Hope hit the theaters. It took how many years for the first three movies to reach their conclusion? There was another long period of time before the second trilogy started, with a significant gap between each of those films. Now, they are popping the SW movies out like popcorn, trying to capitalize on their popularity. Eventually they, like many other things will fall to overexposure. I had no interest in going to see The Force Awakens. Seems like it was available on Blue Ray before its run in the theaters ended. To me, it amounted to a reworked "A New Hope" with a cute new droid which carried the plans for the new Death Star. I did buy it when it became available. Maybe it's a sign of my age, but special effects can only go so far. It was the special effects, and the chemistry of the charcters that really made the first movie. The sound track was amazing as well. I particularly liked the music in the Cantina scene.

Hour Meter - 2016 Yamaha F70 4stroke
There are several types of hour meters. Some record the time a motors ignition is in the "run position". It doesn't matter if it's even running. It is basically a clock that is powered up when you turn the ignition on. It doesn't show how hard the motor has been run. It just measures time in the run position. Another type is based on the engine's rpm. I had one of those on my lobster boat with an 8-71 Detroit Diesel in it. It was the same mechanism as a speedometer. It connected to a fitting on the engine which was identical to a speedometer connection on a vehicles transmission. Run the engine for an hour at one thousand rpm, then run it for an hour at two thousand rpm and it will show twice the time even though on both runs they were run for an hour. At least in the case of the second, it will give you a consistent reading for maintenance procedures. Neither really tells you much about how the engine was actually used or abused. The speedometer type is better for determining routine maintenance because it is based upon the motors revolutions, not the amount of time the engine's ignition switch was in the run position.

Eastern Ma & New England Area Fishing Reports
The date is set for the meet, greet and eat get together. So far, there are four of us, but anyone, and everyone is welcome to join us. Saturday, Jan 21, 1:30 p.m. We are going to meet up by the fireplace at the BPS. From there we will take the ten minute ride to the Red Wing Diner. If you want look around at the BPS, get there early enough so you can be at the fireplace by one-thirty. It is January, so Old Man Winter could throw a monkey wrench into our plans.

I'm not sure the line on the bow handle is stout enough.

A roll of toilet paper, the flashing red buoy and the Coast Guard
We always kept more than one roll on the boat to cover that contingency. They were stowed in a watertight container. Someone, who will remain unnamed, did not put it back in its proper place after use.

A roll of toilet paper, the flashing red buoy and the Coast Guard
The entrance to the river is called "The Devil's Pocketbook". "Another interesting point of history is connected with a natural phenomenon found at the harbor mouth. Because the beach curves around to the west, from the open sea the mouth of the river disappears and presents an unbroken coastline. This illusion afforded early smugglers, and later, Revolutionists, an easy escape from the pursuing British, literally vanishing before their eyes, so often that they came to call it the Devil’s Pocketbook, a name still applied to the region…"

A roll of toilet paper, the flashing red buoy and the Coast Guard
Westport River facing west. At the upper left corner of the image is the Atlantic Ocean. The tip of the point of land that separates the river from the ocean is a large rock formation known as "The Nubble". A few hundred yards into the river is Charlton's Wharf and across the channel from the wharf is a red lighted navigation buoy. We were returning from a spring day's lobstering. A day in which we found one of our rolls of toilet paper had been left where it got wet. My mind hatched a scheme as to how we would dispose of the useless roll of tp. As we entered the river, I told Spencer to get on the bow with the soggy roll. I steered the boat into the tide and nudged it up to the buoy. The red plastic lens had a post about a quarter inch in diameter and about five inches lond at the top of the lens. Spencer placed the toilet paper on the buoy and we returned to the dock, wondering how long our ornament would remain. It was still there the next morning as we were heading out for a day's fishing. It was still there when we returned. The toilet paper remained through May, June, July, August. By now, it had been battered by downpours. It was dimpled as though it had been peppered by hail. Still it maintained its proud perch keeping watch over the activities on the river. It lasted through the rest of the fishing season, still doing its job as a sentinel. We didn't think anything about it during the off season, but when we set our first load of gear in late February, it was still there, looking as bedraggled as ever. Through March, April, and into May, it stood firm. In late May as we were leaving the river a Coast Guard buoy tender was tied up to Charlton's Wharf. It had the buoy on deck for refurbishing. We shared a laugh, hoping the Coasties would be amused by the addition to their navigation aid. Apparently they were. When we returned, they had completed their service of the buoy, and when they set it back into the river, they placed the roll of toilet paper back on its perch. It survived the rest of the season and was still there when we passed by with our last load of gear to end the season. The next spring, it was gone. Whether it was kidnapped, or finally disintegrated we'll never know. But for two years it brought us a bit of fun.

DIY keel guard?
Yes, you can install a keel guard yourself. But, I have read horror stories about people who have installed their own, only to have it end up on the bottom of the pond/lake/river. They have no recourse when that happens. Have it done where they guarantee their work. If it falls off, they have to either refund your money, or install another one. The hull has to be cleaned, marked where the keel guard will go and then that area must be scuffed to produce a good bond. Sometimes, the cheapest way is not the most economical way to go.

Getting Older
I think Nitro has the neatest boarding ladder on all their fiberglass bass boats. I think they were standard equipment on all the Nitros beginning at 2010 or 2011. They are easily accessible from the water, and are solid as a rock. The steps have rubber matting on them. There is a more than sturdy hand grip mounted on the hull, and it folds neatly out of the way.

Let's run with Jan 21 as the day. The Red Wing is usually jamming on Saturday at lunch time. It's a case of being there by noon time, or after 1:30 p.m. If we meet up at the BPS for 1:30, will that give John ample time? If anyone wants to get there earlier and mill around a bit, some can do that and be back to the fireplace at the entrance slightly before one-thirty.

Eastern Ma & New England Area Fishing Reports
Okay, let's remove the weekends of the 7th and the 28th, at least for the time being. That leaves us with the weekends/Saturdays of the 14th and the 21st. Any preferences as to which of those two suit you best? What time to meet up? Do you want to mill around the BPS before heading to the Red Wing?

Deck materials
I'd hazard a guess that salt water boats don't have carpet because when they dry, you have a carpet full of salt.

How many rods is too many?
For rolling the canoe to the shore when I cannot get the truck close enough. It can be folded flat. Rolls easily over most terrain.

Embarrassing comments are the least of the mischief they could do. Our high school chemistry teacher, who weighed 375 pounds, once told us. "You cannot embarrass me. I'm too ignorant."

Why log out? On your own computer it may be fine to stay logged in. But, if you are on a public computer, such as those available to hotel guests, I would definitely want to log out.
