TOO MUCH TACKLE
You're worse than me. Nine rods, all rigged. Three tackle boxes (none huge), a plastic ammo style box full of plastic, A couple of rubbermaid containers, one with batteries for the portable, suction cup fishfinder, another for my wallet, keys, and cellphone. If I tip over they'll float, and keep the contents dry. An empty five gallon bucket to use as a drift anchor, another bucket containing the mushroom anchor, a plastic bag with rain gear on days it might rain, a paddle, and a landing net.......................................in a canoe. And, believe it or not I have plenty of room for more. The canoe weighs 50 pounds, the contents, not including me must weigh a hundred fifty or so.

New Style
Here's an article that will help you for the next few weeks. http://www.bassresource.com/fishing/prespawn-bassfishing.html I went yesterday and found them right where the article says. Tried spinnerbait, chatterfrog, and wacky rigged senko. One on the spinner, one on the chatter, nothing on the senko. I switched to a half ounce Strike King pro grade football jig, black with blue flash, and used a flappin hog watermelon/red flake for a trailer. Caught seven more and missed several due to my inexperience with a jig. You might still have some ice north of Boston. I'm in Westport, about 50 miles south of Boston. The ice is gone. Water temp 46 to a couple of tenths cooler.

Fish Attractant
I use Yum Crawlic. Does it work? I used it one day, and caught plenty of fish. Would I have caught as many or perhaps more without it? Who knows? We've all had days when you couldn't buy a bite and days when they jump into the boat. It could have been a coincidence. But when a four or five dollar bottle of the stuff lasts a month or longer, why take the chance?

Haverhill MA
Southeast Mass. The ice is gone. Has been for a couple of weeks. Went fishing today in Westport. Water temp was 46.

Thanks Glenn for the article on finding pre spawn bass
I printed it out, and read it three or four times. Finally most of it stuck. Today was my first day for the year. It was also my first expedition which I planned to fish mostly with a jig. Air 47, Water 45.8 - 46. Cloudy, no wind for the first hour, then a brisk breeze. I concentrated on the shelf. I tried a spinnerbait and caught one. Tried a chatterfrog and caught another. Tried a wacky rigged 5" senko and got nada. One hour gone. Had rigged one of my rods with a half ounce Strike King football jig, black with blue flash. Added a flappin hog, watermelon/red flake trailer. Second cast, a roe laden 6 pound bass. A few casts later a two pounder. In all, I caught nine bass, seven on the pig n jig. Be kind, I should have caught more but on a few occasions, I mistook a hit for a hang. I was lucky to catch the ones I did, because on some, they hooked themselves. The line went tight, but not with the characteristic tug I'm used to with other lures. It wasn't until I pulled on the line and it started moving off that I realized it was a fish. In one place, I caught two, and missed two or three others. While fighting one fish, which was about ten yards off the port side, another bass jumped clear of the water about ten feet off the bow of the canoe. Then the wind picked up, and I called it a day. Good thing. It started to pour just as I was strapping the canoe in the back of my truck. I figured I had dressed just right, since I felt comfortably warm while fishing. It wasn't until I hauled the canoe out of the water that I started to feel cold. My feet were cold, my hands were cold. If I'd kept on fishing, I'd have probably developed hypothermia. It was a great morning.

Any Luck Yet?
Got out today. Air temp about 47, water temp 46 minus a tenth or two. Cloudy, calm when I started. Spinnerbait one bass about two pounds. Chatterfrog another about the same size. Switched to a half ounce Strike King jig, black with blue flash and a flappin hog watermelon with red flake trailer. Second cast a six pound, roe laden female. Caught six more from two to four pounds on the jig, making the total eight for the day. The wind kicked up, started to rain, called it a day on the pond about noon.

Any Luck Yet?
Well, no fishing today. Temp in the 50s, but wind blowing about 30.

Is any one else tired of hearing about the SEXY SHAD!!!
Consider yourself lucky. Some of us never did. We learned to dress in the dark.

PLEASE READ THE FAQ'S!!!
That is completely unacceptable! Depending on the severity of the threats I would be tempted to involve the law. I'll second that amendment. That kind of attitude is way out of bounds, and I have to believe, illegal.

Help with 5hp outboard motor!!
Sounds like sediment or something has plugged the gas passage for the idling circuit.

Great deals at Dicks Sporting Goods!
Thanks for the info. I'll check it out today.

Anyone tried the Coffee Scented Tubes from Strike King.
Oh well, there goes my line. Great minds run in the same channel, or fools think alike?

What is your favorite top water lure?
Zara Super Spook Jr. Years ago it was the Creek Chub Plunker in an olive color. When I took up fishing again last year, it was disappointing to see they are no longer available. There are similar lures available, but the rear of them is convex, rather than concave as seen in the photo.

Time to go back to old school......
Interesting. Thanks.

Hello all
Good to have you aboard.

why do some rods have so many more eyes than others?
As a general rule, the more eyes, the more evenly force is distributed along the rod. Imagine a rod with the only eye being at the tip. You can easily visualize the large gap that would occur when the rod is bent. Now, visualize an eye between the tip and the rod. The force at that middle eye produces a resistance to bending in the rod. As you continue to add eyes, the tension in the line is more evenly distributed along the length of the rod. Because the rod tapers, it is possible to have the largest gap in the line between the reel and the first eye. There may be exceptions, but on all my rods, the gap between eyes gets progressively shorter as the rod diameter decreases. I assume that there is a method or formula for calculating the optimum placements for the eyes.

BPS Nitro Combo
I had two BPS Extreme combos. I'm satisfied with them, and felt they were good value for the money. I've seen posts on here that say the same. I wanted another combo last year, and the Nitro Combo was on sale for only 70 dollars more, so I sprung for it. I was very impressed with it. It cast noticably further than the extreme, and was nearly impossible to backlash. The extreme took a lot of tuning and adjusting to use it without having my thumb on standby to use when I felt the line on the spool develop a bit of slack. The Nitro, I can "heave" for all I'm worth when I want to cover lot of water. I liked it so much, I bought another on sale last November. It's a 7' 10" extra heavy that will handle lures up to 6 ounces. Bought it to toss the wake baits. The larger ones I have were a bit to much for the MH Nitro, and definitely unmanageable for the Extremes. I haven't seen a post that mentioned the Nitro Combos. Wondering if anyone else has them, and your opinion about them.

Permantly Bent G. Lomis rod
Hard to think that one bend like that resulted in a permanent bend unless it stayed bent for more than a brief period of time. A bend which remains in a rod for a lenthy period of time can result in a "permanent" bend due to memory. Here's a trick which sometimes works to restore the original memory in any fiberglass or composite product. Hang the rod by the tip. Attach a weight to the butt end, maybe 3 - 5 pounds. Using a hair dryer, or a heat gun (be careful with a heat gun, it can cause damage used in one place or is held too close to the rod) apply heat to the bent section. You should see the bend "relax" into a straight alignment. Stop applying the heat, and let the rod remain hanging for a couple of days. If you're lucky, the "memory" in the rod will be "reset" to a straight line. A hair dryer might not work. If you use a heat gun, keep it at least 6 - 8 inches away, and keep it moving. Be sure to apply heat to the entire bend. The rod should never feel more than warm to the touch.

Any Luck Yet?
Looks like tomorrow's the day for me. Gotta finish changing the lures, and rigging three rods. Going to try what was working last November, plus going to try some jigs. I know nothing about jigs, but there's no time like the present to start learning. Report tomorrow evening.

Particle Board?
From Wikipedia. Marine plywood is specially treated to resist rotting in a high-moisture environment. Marine plywood is frequently used in the construction of docks and boats. It is much more expensive than standard plywood; costs for a typical 4 foot by 8 foot 1/2 inch thick board is roughly $75 to $100 US or around $2.5 per square foot, which is about three times as expensive as standard plywood.

Time to go back to old school......
Coincidence? Maybe. This ad was in the column to the left of this thread. http://www.laserspineinstitute.com/?source=WestCoastDisplay As was this. http://www.contourliving.com/c-28-inversion-therapy.aspx There was also a google search on spine issues. Wonder if that column takes key words in a thread, or topics and places the search and/or ads there. I'll have to pay attention.

Particle Board?
Both marine and exterior plywood use the same adhesive. You can get plywood with no knots, but will pay a premium for it. Better to get it with an "A" side, and the other side plugged, touched, and sanded. While it will not delaminate, it should be sealed to prevent it from absorbing moisture, increasing its weight. Marine plywood does not have voids. It should be sealed as well. Haven't bought any in years, but it cost two to three times as much as a good grade exterior plywood. For decking, exterior plywood is fine. For a hull, marine plywood has no substitute. For interior decking and bulkheads, exterior will do fine. Particle board even intact has zero structural strength. It is used as underlayment in homes for carpeting. High density particle board is used for formica countertops. Particle board is good for those because it has a smooth uniform surface. For a boat, never.

Decreasing Interest in the Outdoors
Dang, I left out a lot of those games. Thanks. That brought back many happy memories.
