  1. In general, inshore redfish are the same as bass fishing. Bull reds are totally different. Inshore redfishing, find creek mouths, oysterbars, backwaters. Spook ( or favorite topwater. ..) 1/2oz gold spoon Jighead with swimbait or gulp shrimp Popping cork with Doa shrimp or gulp. Those will catch a majority if the reds, a majority of the time. I like to switch it up and throw twitch baits ( catch 2000, 17mr etc) spinner baits, buzzbaits and I especially like throwing squarebill crankbaits around oyster bars. They can also be caught fairly well on soft plastic trick worms c-rigged or shakey head. I love bass fishing. ......but man. ...I really love redfishing. Oh. ... and they're mighty fine on the grill as well.
  2. That squeal is just under-oiled bearings. I've had an accurist pt out of the box like that- I've also had a pinnacle, two daiwas, an Abu and a bps come like that. It happens. When you buy things on super clearance, you have to know that there's a reason..... overstock normally. Your reel has probably been on a shelf in a hot stock room for 3 years. Add a drop of oil to the spool bearings..... If by " more of the same from quantum" you mean. ... wow, lots of people have owned millions of these reels over the years and never had a problem with them. .... then yes.
  3. 15# yozuri hybrid for the baitcaster. 6-10# yozuri ultrasoft for the spinning reel. Just what I would do.
  4. I'd go with a bitsy jig if I were to stay with a jig. But in that situation in open water, I don't think I could justify the pita. Carolina rig FTW.
  5. I picked a bunch of these up at dicks this winter on clearence. Good to hear the review. I've been throwing paddletail worms for a long, long time. This is just an evolution of that. Good stuff!
  6. 1. Way to store tackle and rods ( typically a milk crate) 2. Anchor trolley. ( I prefer both sides) 3. Fish slime. You can do those in reverse order if you wish.
  7. ^ this. At dicks - you could save some major coin and check out the field and stream technology spec rods. You could get easily get both rods for $100 on that deal.
  8. If you have to crank your spool tension knob down tight to cast. .... something is wrong. Something its physically wrong with the reel. If I were to tighten the spool tension all the way down on any of my reels. ... I wouldn't be able to cast but a foot or two. ..if at all. Your spoil tension knob has either a worn or missing piece. Have it looked at. In your last post OP it seems you have found a solution to your problem- but you haven't really. Because your magnetic brake has nothing to do with your spool tension. Try this. Tie on your 3/8oz jig. Set your mag brake on "0". Tighten your spool tension down all the way. Now. ..push your button. If your 3/8oz jig falls at all. ...you have something wrong. A tightened spool shouldn't be able to cast a 3/8oz jig. Period. If it doesn't, then loosen the knob gently until the jig falls in a controlled manner, with minimum backlash when it hits the floor . This is the proper setting of the spool for that weight. This controls your casting speed. Your brake controls your backlashing when your lure is slowing down in the air. That's why its called a brake. Set it at "5" and adjust less and less as needed. Your brake is there to assist your thumb. The more you practice the less you need. Good luck.
  9. You can count on both to be quality reels. That's not really the issue. What you should do is handle them both, place them both on the rod that you plan to use them on and weigh in any other bells and whistles you may like. Then choose the right reel for you.
  10. I have the small kvd reel from around '08. Its the one in my avatar. It has caught many fish and is currently my light line reel. .... meaning 10#yz for shakyheads and senkos and stuff like that. It is small and light and throws small light baits with ease. I take it with me every trip and it sees alot of action as a shakey head reel. It has never one time giving me a single issue, and even still LOOKS great after 7years or so. I cannot comment on current specific models. .. but I can say that I have several quantum reels of different eras, and every one has been just as solid as any other reel I own from any manufacturer.
  11. ^ the shower curtain ring is the best. But seriously, just buy the plastic lip grip and be done with it. They're awesome and cheap and last forever. They cause WAY less damage then trying to shove that scale hook through their mouth. Many times when I use my fish grip- I never even touch the fish. Grip them, set the grip on the scale hook, release the fish. Can't get more "green" than that. Its the same set up they use on "ultimate match fishing".
  12. Even if the reel is made for saltwater. ... it doesn't matter. A gentle spray and great attention should be payed to it if you use it inshore. I fish inshore ALOT and I only use baitcasters.
  13. You can ask 100 different people about any rod and someones going to say they break. Abu makes good stuff. They have a rep for having good CS. Almost all the manufactures have a GREAT rod in the $100 range. ..... take the reel you want to use and put it on as many rods as you can and try them out. If that's not possible, then just pick a brand YOU trust and get that comapanies $100 rod.
  14. No, my simms have the "leather" palms. I don't feel they interfere with casting in anyway, and I kayak fish mostly so I like the paddle protection. I like the original buff, but I balk at the price. I have recently started wearing buffs by Salt Armor, after seeing 75% off coupons on Facebook. I got two very nice quality gaiters for $12. They are soft, loose fitting and breathe well. I'm very happy with them so far. Even though their business is fishing centered, their neck gaiters appear to be mostly motorcycle focused- with many "face" designs and outrageous graphics. I got their more subtle pattern and I love it.
  15. I have a large variety of buffs, a tilley hat and simms gloves. Columbia long sleeves and pants. The sun isn't playing around ANYWHERE. ... but its downright angry in Florida.
  16. I'm going to throw this out there: If you have a dicks sporting goods nearby- check out the field and stream inferno. While I wouldn't rely on it for sensitive bottom work, it is a lightweight workhorse. I got one for vacation ( in my avatar) and it performed well on t-rigs for smallies. But moving baits is what its best at. When I got back from vacation, I bought 2 more for inshore kayak rods. They have performed flawlessly for 8 months now. I've caught many many redfish up to 27" on them and countless trout and flounder. I'm considering getting on of their 7'6" H/m for a deep cranking rod. They're $30. For slightly better options. .. the acedemy h20 rods and the field and stream tech specs are pretty nice.

I wear mine everytime I go out. Period. Also long sleeves and long pants. If you get loose fitting, specialty clothing, its actually much cooler in the summer than shorts and a tee. While I always say support any members here. ...and try the bassresource gaiter first.... I recently saw this brand on Facebook and they run weekly 40-75% sales on FB. I picked up two for $12 and they are high quality, loose fitting and light. Search " salt armor". They're fast and courteous too.
  18. You can get a great punch rod around $100. Pretty much all the brands have a rod in that range. I would go to cabelas and bring the reel you want to use. ...and try them out. I use a 7'11" veritas- and it was great, but un balanced with the reel I had on it. Put a heavier reel on it and it came alive and FISHES lighter now.
  19. Stopped by the local lake this past Saturday for an hour. Daughter an I fishing topwaters at first, and then I tied her on a purple roboworm and she cast it out. .. I turned away and fished the other direction, and I hear " I got one! " so I turn around expecting her to be hung up. ... she was. ... on this bass! I was so proud! Her first 100% caught on her own bass! Now she wants a pack of those worms and the rattletraps I was throwing. Lol. Furthermore, since I didn't catch anything. ... she's been rubbing it in for three days! Hahhahaha
  20. For bass, anytime the water is above 50° and I feel its right. .. mostly if bait is around. I throw the spook all year long in the salt and it always performs. My #1 bait by far.
  21. J- the OP is talking about fabric softener, liquid. Not dryer sheets. I've heard the same thing OP- but as mentioned above, even with 15+ rods, a bottle of line and lure saltwater formula ( more formula, less price) lasts me all year. Its $12 well spent IMHO.
  22. It pops up now and again online. I actually got 3 600yd spools when sports authority closed here locally. They were the only place to carry it. I buy it completely online now.
  23. Yz will work just fine for everything. Unless braid is needed/desired ( super thick grass ) Color is largely irrelevent- my favorite is smoke for my 12# ( topwater, crankbaits, paddle tails...) and 15# mint green yz ultrasoft for bottom contact and inshore.
  24. I have three accurists of varying ages and would gladly buy more. Never had a single issue with any of them. Good reels.
  25. I don't stand and fish. ...not in my tarpon! ... but I generally lip the smaller ones and net the bigger ones. I rarely land a fish with my grips. ... I tend to use them more as a way to tether the fish to me in the water as I get my camera and board ready. Unless they're toothy!
