Potomac River Fish Off!
Dan, my little jon boat will only fish 2 people. wish I could get 3 in but it's tippy as is with 2. Shimmy, look for Occoquan regional park. Fountainhead is still open but is not renting jon boats. You can still rent kayaks. the res is my home water so to speak and I know the rangers well. Smokey told me last week about the no more jon boat rentals. Occoquan Regional Park 9751 Ox Rd. Lorton, Va.

Potomac River Fish Off!
Believe me, not a problem one bit. Burke will kick out fish untill it freezes. Plenty time left to hook fish there. Nice to be able to place faces with all the names. Speaking of which, where is LHC? Is he planning on making an appearance? I thought this was originally planned to little vs. big bait with LHC being in the little bait camp?

Potomac River Fish Off!
No problem, not really compromising, just sounds like a nice way to get more people involved. just glad Rockville was thinking outside the "Burke Box!!" looks like we should have a good group of people ready for the challenge. I don't have much experience on that part of the river, but have heard of nice bags being caught down there. Like Rockville said it is supposed to be a great late fall /early winter haven for the bass'. Hope we don't have extreme tides tho, all in all, can't wait!

Potomac River Fish Off!
I was looking forward to catching fish at Burke on the brush piles, but the Occoquan sounds like a good alternative. This way we should be able to get some of the guys with bigger boats in the mix and I can feel safe in my slipper of a Jon boat. Not sure how shimmy is gonna feel in a raft tho!! Shimmy can ride with me if he likes. But , yea, that works for me. Could we go until 3 maybe?? Hate to only fish for short time on a late fall beauty like they say it might be! I will still have theBurke maps for those still interested, someones gotta believe me that place rocks hard this time of year!!!

Potomac River Fish Off!
Aaron, you could easily drop your boat in Burke. You would just need to trim up the outboard when putting in. How easily you winch your boat back on the trailer is the sticky point. Lake was at full pool on Sunday, plenty of water to put a glass big boat in. People with small outboards do idle out there as said before, at your own risk. This time of year not a big deal IMO.

Potomac River Fish Off!
Would be nice if we could get everyone in a boat, not a whole lot of productive water for shore fishing at Burke. Is there another place that gives equal access to good areas to catch quality fish?? I did figure out how to post pics, I posted the Burke fish a friend and I caught last Sunday in the tournament/ outings section.

Potomac River Fish Off!
Sounds like fun. Here are some things to consider as well. All I have is a jon boat, co-angler welcome. Burke is no longer renting boats and niether is Fountainhead. No rentals at Beaverdam to my knowledge. If Burke is chosen as the "fishoff" site, I have a fairly detailed map of brushpiles and contours so no team feels at a disadvantage. Let's keep the ideas going, could be something we do on a regular basis as far as a get together!!

Burke Lake,Sunday 11/15
Fished Burke from sunup to sundown. My buddy George and I went looking for some brushpile pigs. Had a couple of nice fish a few dinks and 1 giant blue cat!! 4 good keeper bass 1 about 4lbs, 1 about 3 lbs, 1 about 2 3/4, 1 about 2. The blue cat must have been pushing 40lbs!! Wind picked up in the afternoon and it got A bit tough staying on the piles. We caught 8 fish total, mostly on jigs, some on blade and 1 on shakey. Will post pics tomorrow.

Anyone havin luck on the potomac lately ?
Burke has changed drasticly in the last couple of years. The water is crystal clear. It used to have a nice color to in for most of the year. That coupled with the amount of people who just rent boats to cruse the lake make it difficult at times. Like Josh said, you can go out this time of year and might not even see another boat. This is what I call quality time. Being very familiar with the lake I can take advantage of the quiet and look for the fish that do climb back up in the water column and they become more apt to take a bait. Just my opinion but I do think it should be ripe for the pickin' this weekend. Water back up in whats left of the weeds, perfect water temp to slow roll a spinnerbait, enough wood cover to make it interesting, and I'll always look at the piles and points and drops. Very much looking forward to Sunday. As far as Beaverdam, I've only been a handful of times with limited success. Wasn't aware you could get a boat in there again, thought they rolled a couple of big boulders in at the church ramp. You can get a bassboat in Burke at the main ramp, we put my buddies 21ft center console skeeter in, no problem. Gettin' it out was tough as you have to winch it out!! I've seen plenty in there though. River might be a bit tough this week-end, probably lots of floaters with all of the extream tides.

I will, and if I manage to land any I'll be sure to give details. And yes shimmy, Burke is the 2nd largest muskie impoundment on the east coast(have no idea where the largest is) from what I've heard from game and fish. supposed to be 2 adult muskie per acre out there. I've seen quite a few pulled out from there this time of year. Brush piles and nice drops are the best bets this time of year and there are quite a few. I have a very old map of brush piles, some of which are probably silted in by now. Nothing like dropping a big 'ole jig in a brush pile in about 20 ft of water and watching your line hop off the surface and heart pounding cause you got the bite, but now you gotta get that fish out of the pile!! Very fun way to hang into some better fish. Dan, you up for some??!!

I appreciate the complement Aaron, but I'm just a guy who grew up here with too much time on my hands with a terrible jones to fish reguardless of the weather!! I used to fish Burke at least 2 times a week in the early 90's. I have had a couple of fish lost at the boat that people have said were close to 10lbs. A few years ago a couple of fishermen I know had 2 over 8 in th same day!! I've had a bunch of great days out there this time of year where you could catch 10 fish with the best 5 going over 22lbs. In my opinion it only gets better out there from here till we freeze up. Even then if you can find open water you can still catch 'um at Burke.

It's all good shimmy. If you want to get out to Burke with me on Sunday, you're more than welcome to hop on. Probably all day if you are interested. I just have a small jon boat but it floats and moves!! Thanks Dan. if shimmy declines the invite would you be interested in an outing on Burke??

Some of the best fishing of the year is here now and within the next few weeks. I will be looking to catch some of the biggest fish all year in lakes and reservoirs in the area. The river is still a good bet, but if you wait till middle to end of December you can really find them in very predictable spots and some of them will be big. Some years I think I enjoy fall to late winter better than spring. Not as many crushing fronts and unpredictable weather patterns. Lets just see what happens. I have a camera and live well, I'll start keeping track, good or bad. I'll tell you exactly where and what I get them on. All about the exchange of info. Like shimmy, not afraid to zero(not happy when it happens) and not afraid to say so. Lets have some fun. Some people are not so keen on fishing in the cold........anyone opposed to it?? As long as it's not frozen I'm still tryin!!!!

Apoligies to all offended. Last time on the river was very slow. 8 small fish between 4 people. A buddy of mine was crushing 4-5lbrs on small jigs in the back of Oxen along the rip-rap. Gonna try Burke Sunday. Should'nt be long till the big fish start hanging out in the brush piles.
