  1. thanks everybody. i had a camera i took hunting with me every trip, but last duck season i guess the salt air got to it or something, and it stopped working, but im definately getting one soon. i felt a little sick letting it go with nothing but a memory. i think i will push it up to 5 lbs or more....maybe bigger rotfl. thanks again.
  2. found a new pond about 3 minutes (literally) from my house, somewhere in the 5 acre range, and went out tonight to try it. well, i caught the biggest bass of my life. i dont have a camera phone (how conveniant lol), but it measured 23", LMB. caught it on a bubblegum zoom trick worm, weightless/weedless, 3/0 gami, 30 lb power pro, shimano sedona, on a MH 6' rod. i was swimming it just below the surface, jerking it to the top every so often, and she SLAMMED it. ran straight into a bush, i am VERY glad i got a larger reel and was using braid. pulled it out no prob, was 23", and very very fat. im guessing 4 lbs...? possibly bigger, im not sure. i dont want to over estimate, but im pretty sure it was atleast 4 lbs. anyway, i think this pond is a keeper . thanks for listening!
  3. bottom width has SO MUCH more to do with feeling and staying safe. i would stay well above 30", in the 36" range at the very least, 42-48" being ideal. and remember, 2' in length is a world of difference, a 12 footer is HUGE compared to a 10', and a 14' is a totally different class of boat when compared to a 12 footer.
  4. i work on the water, 6 days a week while im off from college. im exposed to sun all day long. my uncle also worked on the water for 20 years or so, no he paints houses, so he has been in the sun all his life.......and at 55 years old e time with skin cancer. every couple months he had to go get something removed, and has had some close calls with melonoma cancers. so i where a hat, and slather down with spf 50 everyday. id rather live a while and look silly than die young from looking "cool".
  5. thanks for posting this, it answers my question i had in the other thread...
  6. sounds like i got a winner by mistake! when you say weightless, do you still fish is like a t rig on the bottom, or topwater, or just swim it back to you? thanks fo rany info.
  7. i am pretty new to bass fishing, but since i have gotten serious about fishing t rigs, that would be my choice. everytime i have used em this year, i have atleast gotten some hits, my hookset timing needs work, but the t rigged plastic worm has ALWAYS done its job.
  8. i finally got some braid for the first time, green powerpro, 30 lb, for my shimano sedona 4000. i have never used braid before, so i went out last night to try it out. i was using a hula popper and nailed a nice 3 lb lmb. i didnt know any braid knots, so i used the Palomar, tied exactly like the pics you find on google, and it held fine. i didnt see where it slipped or anything, so i was wondering, is this a good knot to use for all my fishing? its fast and simple, and seems to have held ok.
  9. i was looking for some bubblegum colored plastics yesterday for t rigging, and grabbed a bag of zoom trick worms. i was in a hurry and didnt notice they had no tail. i was wondering how well they will work for t riggin since they will have no curly tail action. thanks for any info,
  10. i read thatshakey heading was best in non weedy and light weeds. is this true? i fish fairly heavy weeds so i kinda dismissed it. i also fish shallow water, 12 ft being about the deepest, so i never really tried drop shotting. thanks for the replies.
  11. the main pond i fish has a real grassy bottom, and since its basiclly all i fish, i have never used spinnerbaits or jigs, because they grass up so bad. i feel like im missing alot of experiance and possibly fish, becasue i dont use these lures. i have read the bassresource articles on jigging and spinnerbaits, and it all involves bounceing and rolling on the bottom. so here is my question. do i use these techniques and pick grass off every cast? or do i modify the techniques and jig and roll just above the grass? will a lure with grass on it still catch? thanks for any info. i know im asking a load of questions, but since i discovered the articles on here, i always check em first before posting, so....what ever..im a noob that needs help lol. thanks, i really appreciate all the help
  12. i know its a broad topic, and ill be getting mostly personal opinions, but thats great, ill take any advice. the gander mtn. here is actually the better choice in my area, beating out dicks and bps. they have a huge selection, but i appreciate the advice anyway, i guess all areas are different. thanks for the responses!
  13. id appreciate some advice. i would like some basic advice on shapes/sizes and color to get for t rigging, that would cover most water and cover situations. im ready to buy several bags, and want to get what i really need. thanks for any help
  14. i was trying to decide between the 2, and ended up with the shimano sedona. im not an expert, but i love the sedona. its super smooth, and has an amazingly smooth drag. im really really happy with it.
  15. wondering if a spinning r&r would be good for light t rigging..weightless plastics and tubes for lmb? im in love with t rigged plastics, btu cant afford a baitcaster right now...thoughts?
  16. if you were going to have a rig for only t-rigged plastics, using around fallen trees and grass beds, what kind of line and lb test would you use?
  17. there is about a 7 acre pond i fish the most, its about a ten minute ride from my house, so i can slip out there anytime. it was dug out to privide dirt for a highway over pass. there are overhangs and fallen trees around the edges, no structure at all further out. the edges are 2-4' deep within the first 5' out, then its a very fast drop to 7-10' deep, deepest parts in the middle are about 20 ft, average depth away from the bank, id say7-10'. i have always fished the shore cover, never anything else, but recently i discoved there is a load of grass on the bottom. if i dropped my canoe achcor 20-40' from the bank, 7-12' of water, it comes up covered in grass, big wads of it. will this hold bass even though there is no brush structure, just grass? if so, when do i fish this grass instead of shore structure? what kinda lures should i use, and how high above the grass should i fish them? im not sure what kind of grass it is, if you all could post some possibilities, ill google the names and find out for sure, if it matters. thanks for any help.
  18. anything involving touching the bottom, other than soft plastics. jigs and spinner baits on the bottom drive me insane. as soon as it touches the bottom, i imagine its suddenly grassed up, and have to reel in to check it. i have no confidence in jigging or bouncing a spinnerbait on the bottom.
  19. well, its great to be a poor college student gotta pack away a bit more money than i thought, so i cant afford a specific bait casting rig like i was planning on. i need to stick with a all purpose spinning rig, something that is affordable, adaptable, and tough. im looking for a reel that will last atleast 2 year round fishing seasons. my old cheap diawa is starting to grind, i think i paid like 30$ for the combo 3 years ago, so its lasted ok. i want a reel that can toss small to mid size poppers, jerk baits, and texas rig tubes. so ive got a couple questions, and would appreciate (more) great advice. 1) its the obvious, what 50-70 (cant afford anymore than 70, thats really pushing it) can handle steady fishing for 2 years? im looking at the phluger president (not the xt, the regular model). it says its got 10 bearings, so it should be smooth. think it will handle what i need? http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_51666_100001002_100000000_100001000_100-1-2 2) dont need a rod yet, ill use what i have till i figure out exactly what i want, then spend the money. 3) line. i am a noob with anything other than mono. for pitching texas rigged tubes, and hard jerkbaits and poppers, what line should i go with, and what lb test do you recommend? fireline? braid? does fireline require a mono backing? thanks, really appeciate any help, as always.
  20. i was fishing a rapela nockoff hard jerkbait, about 4" long today, just jerking it, letting it flot to the surface, jerking it, letting it float back to the surface.....and on and on, and slammed a nice fat 3 lber right off the bat, but didnt get any other hits after that. was i fishing it wrong and get lucky? or is that the right way to fish a hard jerk bait? should i keep it moving like a shallow crankbait? or fish it like a popper, jerk wait, jerk wait? or is it just finding what works for the day and doing it? thanks for any advice.
  21. thanks for the relpies. the reel price range cant be any higher than the revo s, rod cant be any higher than 120$, 80-100 being more comfortable. thanks again, mike. as for rod length, i will either be in a canoe, or pitching/flipping from the bank.
  22. i am ready to get a good rig, mainly for worm fishing, but right now it will be somewhat of a do all. some jigging, crankbaits, larger poppers, but mainly for texas rigged worms and tubes. this is what ive come up with, not sure what lenght and action to get for worm fishing. i would also like to know whether to go with braid or mono, and what lb test. thanks for any info. i would also like some general info on choosing a work rod, what charecteristics to look for. thanks. http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_84683_100001001_100000000_100001000_100-1-1?ordProd=Y&CMID=TOP_selectitems#itemDetail http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_59070_100002006_100000000_100002000_100-2-6?ordProd=Y&CMID=TOP_selectitems#itemDetail
  23. went out in the canoe last night and this morning, in a little pond that was dug out to built up a highway over pass. it drops off down to 8-20 feet only 2-5 feet out, all the way around. there is no structure in the middle to work, only the shore line with its fallen trees and over hangs. its a total of about 5 acres in size. last night i caught 5 dinks, all around the 1-1.5 mark. they were caught on a clear sparkly yellow curly tail with a safty pin spinner. went out this morning, and caugt a total of 5 lmb, and one massive blue gill ( :o lol) on a rebel popper. all were little, once again around the 1 pound mark. i had one hit on the popper, a dink that busted it, but didt take, and i was reeling it in to cast again and WAM! i got a fat lmb, around 3 lbs! i know most y'all nail 5-6 lbers every trip but im a noob and am pretty pumped about it 8-) thanks for all the advice, im totally addicted now!
  24. i live on the eastern shore of va. i fish 3 small farm ponds, around 5-10 acres apiece. i also will be fishing the pocomoke river in md. its only about a half hour from my house, and because its a tidal part of the chessie bay, i can use my va license.
