  1. Keeping in the spirit of the initial post, brand being irrelevant, IMO the reel should match the rod. Being a 100% spinning user and using spinning gear of many sizes I would be using a rod better suited for the weight of my lure. Even equating that to bass fishing, although this would not exclude other species, I mostly likely would use a heavier rod say for a larger swimbait or heavier spoon. I would prefer a reel that balanced better on the rod, I think in that scenario a 4000 reel may be my choice. Most of the time the extra line capacity and more horsepower of the reel is not needed and the drags are probably set to the line anyway. Each step down with the rod my size my reel follows suit. As a braid user line management is not a concern but it may be to a mono user and I think larger spools do a better job.
  2. The opinions on this site are from fishermen that catch fish for sport and hobby, that isn't the way it is for the meat hunters. Sadly any new or existing regulation IMO will not be heeded, any enforcement is difficult at best. Too many roadside bait fishermen too monitor.
  3. I'm personally unaffected as I c&r, but I would say just leave it where it is. There is just too much water and too few FWC officers to really do anything about it anyway.
  4. Forgot about this until I read Kaline. Back in the day many professional athletes did not earn enough $ from their professional sport, Bobby Layne QB of the Detroit Lions was one of them. I was a kid about 12, that would make it somewhere around the Lions' last championship, Bobby Layne owned a collision shop on Wyoming Ave in Detroit, just down the street from my dad's store. Somehow the 2 met in the neighborhood both my dad and Bobby lane were avid fishermen, so they went fishing a few times in his boat, my dad never went fishing without me. To say I knew Bobby Layne would be a stretch as I never had any meaningful one on conversation with him, but I did fish with him.
  5. Your fish...........your business on what to do with it. I wouldn't go thru the bother of trying to get a fish certified for a record, I don't care about those things. I don't carry a scale or a tape and some of my best fish have never been photographed, estimates work fine for me. I won't say I'm not curious and if someone is around with a scale and can take good pic, fine, but if not I won't be upset.
  6. My hand migrated in front of the reel many years ago without ever thinking about. I find this to be most comfortable for me and I like my hand on the foregrip in " strike position", I feel I have more leverage. The only negative is being a bit more difficult doing one handed casts than holding in the more traditional way. I don't think any of my rods are uncomfortable to cast with, I don't consider buying rods without a nice foregrip, my preference.
  7. I didn't last but 10 minutes, too cold for me and worse today. If I wasn't a 7 day week fisherman I would have gutted it out.
  8. Bob Lanier.............................was his real estate agent, had a friendship for a few years. Dave Bing..............................Bob stopped by his house to BS while we were looking at homes. Gordie Howe..........................was at his cottage on Lake Erie as kid, we did chin ups on his biceps. Alex Delvecchio......................bought scrap from him after he retired from hockey, owned shop making trophies. Thomas, Hitman, Hearns.......met him several times when I was doing boxing photography. Hilmer Kinty...........................same as Tommy Hearns. Emanual Stewart...................same as Tommy Hearns. Jackie Kallen.........................boxing manager and life long friend since elementary school. Redd Foxx.............................he bought drinks for our table and chatted for awhile between performances. Joe Morton, actor..................schmoozed at the pool in Cancun a few times. Superman, aka Christopher Reeve...met on the set of Somewhere in Time, had dinner twice on Mac Island.
  9. That cold wave is drifting down into Florida, I skipped going to the coast the last couple of days and won''t be there for several more. I've done a little bit of bass fishing, too cold for me...........lol.
  10. In this kind of situation the rod is more important than the line. I fish those pilings nearly everyday, between the cement and barnacles the heaviest of lines can easily be severed. A rod with good backbone, also having your hand up on the shaft helps in being able to muscle them away from the pilings, not that I'm successful 100% of the time. I fish either 14# mono and 15 or 20# braid, my leaders are 30 & 40# for the braid and my mono rig has a 30# short steel leader on the lure. I personally do not use lines and leaders much heavier even for pelagic species, rod and technique are the 2 most important criteria.
  11. Braid and spinning gear for everything, I prefer the brand on sale.
  12. A lot of them, just a few off the top of my head Kelly's Heros Bridge over the River Kwai Longest Day Great escape Dirty Dozen Stalag 17 From Here to Eternity Pearl Harbor Deer Hunter
  13. There is a difference what a practice lure is doing on land as compared to a lure moving in the water, I wouldn't be overly concerned. Line twist can occur on b/c equipment too, 2 examples would be lures that constantly rotate and spin a lot and drift fishing where cut bait is turning by the action of the drift. Both barrel and crane swivels will turn in your hand but in water they spin very little, pretty much being just a line connector. Ball bearing swivels do a much better job, they aren't perfect either, the best thing I have found is using a ball chain swivel. I understand they are very popular on the west coast for salmon and I make lures using them here in Florida. I recently purchased some from this supplier. http://sales.sidedrifter.com/Ball-Chain-Swivels-10-Pack_p_277.html
  14. I haven't seen a fish stringer like that in 50 years.............lol, could be I don't use them anymore.
  15. They know who they want to go home with..........I'm partial to golden retrievers
  16. Best SW action is late summer and fall. Fish when the bait is starting to dissipate, when snook and tarpon are gorging on live bait it's hard to hook them on artificial. You're in the prime area of the ICW for 20-40# jack crevelles, Palm beach is known for them. Fish the bike path just north of Flagler bridge on the east side, and bring a bigger rod, lol.
  17. If it's anything like golf they may have have other products with them as well. A pro golfer may have Callaway driver in a Callaway bag, but he could very well be using irons, wedges and a putter from different companies, not uncommon. When Tiger Woods was using a Scotty Cameron or Titleist puter (he still sometimes uses it) the grip on it says Ping, but it's faded out.
  18. With the exception of deliveries that I need to sign for, which I prefer, by the time I get to the door after the bell is rung, they are in their truck and gone. Don't really recall any problems with fed/ex, ups or usps due to breakage.
  19. I gave up on Pline floroclear, I was using 20# offshore in the Atlantic, too many weak spots in the line, lost fish due to breakage. I went back to my old standby, trilene..problem solved. I do use the floroclear for 2-3 leaders, it's been fine for that.
  20. Nice !.........those spots (last fish) make great snook bait.
  21. I'm diabetic too. I was having a problem with medication, at times my glipizide took me down into the 50's, that's scary. My dr has me on Januvia and metformin and the nature of those drugs is not for the real low count, it's been working pretty well the last 3 months. Saw my diabetes doc 2 days ago, I'm not on insulin but he was telling that the vicious cycle of being on insulin is that it promotes weight gain and weight gain produces higher blood numbers resulting in the need for more insulin. He said he's had patients that have lost a lot of weight and no longer require insulin......weight control and excercize is real important.
  22. Starts the night before, no meal with a lot of salt, same goes for breakfeast in the morning. When my diabetes was not under control I drank a lot of water, too hard to take a whizz in 5' waves. Now that my blood sugar is in control I drink very little when I'm out there, make sure I don't eat anything with too much salt and no sugar. I have to eat to live, just the way it is, I maintain a very healthy diet, I have no choice, my wife won't let me.........lol.
  23. Pflueger is the Timex of the reel industry, they take a lickin and keep on tickin. Of the 5 I own, none have ever needed service. My arbor for about 80 bucks has been banging out 15-35# fish for over a year with no signs of it slowing down, saltwater has not affected it all. It may not be the best reel I own but it's as smooth as my other reels, worry free and handles what I catch, I can't imagine expecting more from a reel. And if it does fail for $80 I can buy a new one.
  24. At the very least wear a band strap for your glasses, if you don't have one just tie some heavy mono on the temples. I wear prescription progessives, too much of an investment not to have band strap, plus I'd hate to be on the water with no glasses at all.
