  1. Only 1 rule of thumb for any kind of fishing, that's just showing up. You get out there enough and you'll catch fish. There are times when every bit of conventional wisdom tells you to stay home, those off periods can produce some of the best fish.
  2. For the most part if their is a problem with rod it's going to happen soon after you first use it. I've never had a rod break under normal fishing conditions, but a lifetime warranty makes me feel a lot better. That tells me the company has faith in what they are selling. Getting 50% off a new rod for a non warranty breakage isn't too bad, but if one of their rods broke why would I buy another. I have a few Shimano rods and I like them just fine, it's doubtful a new Shimano rod will be in my future when I can a rod without having to jump thru hoops if a problem arises.
  3. I believe I already have it. A med 8/17 spinning rod (Redbone) size 20 reel (Soron) with 15# braid, been catching bass for years with it, although I mainly fish ponds with lighter gear for bass. I catch snook, jacks and array of other inshore species on this set up, it's good multi purpose outfit. Only 1 combo, this would be it.
  4. Lotteries are nothing more than legalized numbers racket, which help build organize crime. The odds of winning was probably better when the Purple Gang ran the racket. The lottery is not gambling, it's taking a shot for a few bucks to see if you can get lucky. Real gamblers don't rely on luck, they know the game and their skill level when it comes to one on one gambling like pool or poker. Las Vegas wasn't built on people winning house games.
  5. This would depend on the over all weight of the lure. If you can cast without having to "lob" then there shouldn't be a problem. Many rods can exceed the max lure weight, it's a matter of whether yours will. There is always the option of buying lures that will conform to your rod specs.

  7. I use that size on a light, but it doesn't have to be a Pflueger or any other brand. What it has to be is comfortable in your hand as it's a small reel, the knob or paddle should be to your liking as well.
  8. Moot point as I haven't bought a ticket, if I do in the future and WON, this is what I'd do. I certainly don't need that sum of money to secure my future, even 10 million is way more than I would need. My family would benefit but not to the degree to alter their work ethic or their goals. I'd start a business to employ people, I would not take a salary. The remaining couple of hundred million would be donated to special olympics and closely related organizations. My lifestyle would change, I'd be involved in these activities and fish a lot less. With great wealth comes great responsibility.
  9. A swivel will help reduce line twist with an inline spinner but it won't eliminate it. I use the smallest I can without it going thru the top guide. I use swivels (duolocks too) a lot more in freshwater than I do in salt.
  10. Not a whole lot different. I use 1 of 3 outfits for weedless fluke fishing, the rod size is predicated on the cover I have to pull the fish out of. I go with the lightest I can get away depending on the conditions I'm dealing with.
  11. I generally go with my past experience and check out friend's new gear. I keep things real simple, my rod and reel sizes are based pretty much on the water conditions or whether I need to pull a fish from high canal or a jettie. I fish with about 6 lures on a regular basis. My inshore fishing follows the same philosophy. Not to say I don't try something new once in awhile, I always seem to go back to what's been working for me. I have quite a few combos, but I'm fishing fresh, inshore and offshore, I have too much that overlap. I'm pretty much at the point of buying only when something needs to be replaced, I'm happy with what I have.
  12. I favor my top brand $100 rod to anything I've had at 2-3 times the price.
  13. When I'm pulling fish out of heavy cover or away from a bridge or pylon I'm doing it with the rod. My hand is placed up on the rod shaft and I'll hold the spool with my other hand. The caveat is the size of the line and leader, if it's strong enough to hold. With a larger fish I'll only palm the spool for extra drag, grabbing the spool will pop the knot. When I have a fish on the line too big to land like a larger tarpon, I'll grab the spool to break the fish off. IMO the reel plays a minimal part in "muscling" a fish.
  14. Get the size that feels best on your rod, as Adam said he likes the way the 4000 balances on his rod. I happen to own a 8.8 oz reel that feels perfect on my 7' rod, holds way more line that's needed but it feels great. Whether it's backed or straight braid, the feel is the most important thing.
  15. I have 8225, 8230 and 8235, my most used reels for bass. Been using these reels for years and years, not a thing wrong with the felt drag. They do come with 2 spools. Fishing 7 days a week year round these reels have been used a lot. In fairness my 8230 needed a repair after about 5 years of use, this reel gets used every single day, I replaced it with a a new one. I was using the 8235 for saltwater, moved it to freshwater after about 18 months, bearings are not anti corrosive, had no problems but didn't want to press my luck.
  16. I'm a spinning user, the handle is important to me. This is a size 20 soron reel, I put a size 40 handle on it. I prefer the length and the different knob. This is a lightweight saltwater combo that I mainly use for bass fishing now, have caught many a 15-20# snook on it, jacks have spooled me, lol. Rod don't look bad for being nearly 10 years old.
  17. Nonsense ! It's preference spinning vs b/c, the power comes from the rod. I happen to be a spinning only user, have yet to see any of my reels flex while bass fishing. The majority of my fishing is targeting fish bigger and stronger than bass ( the equipment isn't much different in size), using only spinning my reels don't flex, they have been in service for years. Where I mostly fish I could for weeks and weeks without ever seeing a b/c.
  18. X as in extra heavy rod? Depends on who you're going to ask. IMO extra heavy is for casting extra heavy lures. I do have extra heavy rods, I use them for extra heavy fish caught in extra deep water. I can count the times on 1 hand I've used only a mh for bass fishing, I'm no fan of big rods when it comes to bass.
  19. Interesting observation on the generation gap regarding movie characters and types of movies. Quite often I prefer the older B&W movies without the modern special affects.
  20. There is more bank access at Osbourne but it's further from Boca than Lake Ida. lake Ida rd to lake Worth rd is nearly 10 miles.
  21. I've got the older style clarus, 6'6 med that fishes IMO as a ml. This is my main bass rod, I like it just fine.
  22. Boca Rio is one place I won't fish anymore, too close to the water and I don't trust those snakes. At the El Rio, just south of the c-15 you can park in an office complex and just walk across Congress, or fish it walking back up the c-15. You can also park at Park Commerce Blvd along side the canal just north of Yamato.
  23. I've been thinking of the shingles vaccination too, both my daughter and sil had it, it was not fun for them.
  24. It isn't 1 size fits all, everybody metabolizes things we ingest differently. I personally don't drink energy drinks, I've had them and a cup of coffee seems to work as well for me. I drink close to a pot every morning, sitting heart 60 and b/p 110/68, pretty good for a 69 year old. That doesn't mean I don't other medical problems (much of it from smoking, probably affects my energy more than anthing), very cautious with my diet, no sugar and low carbs.
  25. Happen to catch Bogie in Casablanca the other day, Rick was great character.
