  1. Common freshwater fish that can breathe air: catfish - gar - mudfish. There are others, but not ones caught by hook and line for the most part.
  2. The only confidence that counts is the confidence that your knowledge is factual and not fantasy. What is this creature that you chase? Do you really know? Are you confident?
  3. My presentation on this subject was not meant to eliminate the question process, but more to get you to understand the difficulty of the question. Further, I left unmentioned the subjectiveness of the your question. In presenting any resolve to your question you have to understand that your observations are based on your ability to fish, your knowledge of the lake, and your knowledge of the bass's habits at the time of the study. Those parameters could be quite different from one fisherman to the next, which makes your observations quite skewed, and absolutely subjective.
  4. Nothing like it!
  5. If on a boat simply let line out behind the boat while moving. I do this weekly - it keeps all twist out of line including braid..
  6. The greatest depleter of DO is rainwater as it in itself is void of beneficial DO gain. Heavy rainfall and its associated runoff is the most prevalent cause of fish kills in lakes and waters already having low disolved oxygen.
  7. Difficulties off the top: size of fish - size of pond (lake) - depth of fish - depth of pond (lake) - depth of presentation - size of presentation - temperature of air - temperature of water at presentation location - altitude - and coping with the ever changing pressures. All or most are uncontrolable variables and are just scratching the surface in order to present any valid study. Have fun with the project but keep in mind that even if you could answer all variables that your findings will be only of local validity and not universal. If I was your mentor in this project I would definitely suggest something else for this year's science project.
  8. My suggestion is twofold: First you are asking your question at the wrong location - Contact your local DNR to get a correct assessment to your particular locale and situation.. The best that we who do not fish that area is five suggestions that are a guess at best about your situation. Your local biologists will help you.
  9. If you really wish to catch shiners for fishing learn to bait an area and then throw a cast net. Although it's not difficult to get a few, it can be quite difficult to get very many. The guys that do this for a living have been practising thier trade after very knowledgeable training and quite a bit of practise. Dog food is excellet, and fish pellets are better.
  10. Arrived at the ramp early dark AM waiting for clients. Put the boat in and while walking up the ramp came across a Sony digital camera. Fortunately for the owner of this $1200.00 camera, he had some warranty work performed and the receipt was in his case. After some tracking I found the owner who lived on the other side of Florida. They had been out the night before alligator hunting. When I called him and informed him that I just shipped his camera he was totally astounded. He had not realized yet that his camera was missing as he went from the hunt directly to work. I imagine he will be taking pictures for a long time to come with that camera. We have seen many rods and reels, cell phones, cameras, and misc. disappear into the murky depths of the Stick Marsh. One of the saddest: A group of clients were fishing live bait and using our equipment. All of my equipment for clients are Gblank rods with Chronarch reels. One of the sons was absolutely sold on the chronarch and was going to buy one as soon as he could. With live bait one never puts a rod down without having the spool open as it will probably get hit and fly through the air. He set his down to take a bite and was asked if the spool was open. His reply, yes barely escaped his lips when the rod sailed through the air at least 30' before hitting the water. This young man now owned a rod and chronach, however with the future benefit of being able to fish with it. As for equipment accidentally left: I think it is a sad statement that it is picked up and walked off with.
  11. Nah, don't clean it. As long as you don't put it on ice it will keep just fine. The indians kept theirs best by buring it 6 inches in the ground overnight.
  12. Don't bother guessing, it's a waste of time. Simply put, you caught a fish that you were very happy with: leave it at that.
  13. Raul, you need a closer fishing hole - 500 miles is a bit of a round trip.
  14. Never decide what's good or bad by Wal Mart. Their buyers are - well questionable at best. Swim Senko works great over emerging grass weightless, and the same of grass that is just submerged. From there on down you need enough weight to keep the depth you want when slow retrieving the bait.
  15. 40 should push it over with hydrofoil but not with authority I would think. Whalers have always been superbly designed and fly without much to pust them. Hull design, hull design, hull design.
  16. 1: Most fail within the first year for lack of customers and working capital. You definitely need a major amount of cash-on-hand to make it. You need to eat/sleep/pay bills, as well as maintain inventory. 2: Location is of the utmost importance! 3: Hours - Sunday/Saturday: before daylight until dark/no down time if you want to succeed. 4. You would be best to buy something established rather than do a start-up. If you were to go the route of buying, beware of books presented. Have an accountant examine books and tax returns. 5. Learn everything you can about maintaining any live-bait situation. Keeping live-bait alive is a study unto itself. 6. If a spouse is involved make sure you have 150% approval as being self-employed is very difficult. 7. I doubt that you will find many that would give you information such as net sales, however if you do, take that information with a grain of salt. The best source for demographics is the local Chamber of Commerce. Good luck if you decide to preceed with this.
  17. Spun hub - if you spun the hub you boat would barely move - you can simply put the motor in gear and if the hub is spun you will be able to turn the prop by hand. What RPM is the motor reaching? It doesn't make sense that the change would be that drastic in the two weeks that you have had the boat, so I would think it is something fairly obvious.
  18. Texposed is threading the point through the worm so that it lays along the back of the fish: Skin hooked - push the worm slightly towards the eye, insert point into worm and let worm return. Only the very end of the point is buried. A: sweep is correct, but speed is the best hookset : either to the side or swept up, but putting a snap into that sweep will get you the fish. Remember, a good hookset is a function of speed, not power.
  19. I only have one: 40 years now, and she just doesn't like fishing. However, she has never been anything but supportive of my fishing career.
  20. I would be totally remiss if I didn't mention that many Moms like to fish - of course expect to have them catch the most and the biggest.
  21. Don't forget, Grandpa is really just a big kid! The only thing about taking them - well, you know what I mean.
  22. An almost certainty - take a youngster, your spouse, or a neighbor who has never fished before and they will catch more and bigger fish than you. It is ordained to be that way.
  23. Some of what you read just might be someone's speculation and not in fact reality. I fish in south Florida. Most of the year it is an every day event for at least 8 hours per day. I and my clients are applying protectorant all day long. Adversly affecting the fishing - not!
  24. 40 HP on a 16' glass bass boat? I don't think so. What's the sticker rate that boat for? 90 HP or perhaps better.
  25. Swim Senko w/1/4 ounce weight.
