My son and I finally got our ice fishing gear put together and went out for a couple of hours late this afternoon to do some jigging on Honeoye Lake. This catch represents three firsts for me. It was the first fish that I've ever caught through a hole in the ice, it is the first fish that I've ever caught in the month of January, and it is the first fish for me this year. I'm even happier that it was a bass! There was 6" of ice with a cover of about 5" of snow. We were using Jigging Raps tipped with fathead minnow heads.- 2009 best fishing season ever, so I made a video to remember it...
Thanks everybody. Have a Happy New Year and an awesome fishing season to come however you go after them, be it from the shore, on a $40,000 bass boat, or in a bit of colorful molded plastic!- 2009 best fishing season ever, so I made a video to remember it...
Thanks everyone!- PB Striped bass from the kayak!
Awesome fish! A few of us kayak anglers up here in Western NY are planning a trip to VA sometime this winter to go after stripers. Can't wait!- 2009 best fishing season ever, so I made a video to remember it...
I put together a collection of just a few of my kayak fishing exploits from this past season. I learned a lot and look forward to improving as an angler with help from this bassresource.com!- Unusual places you'd love to fish
I know this is reviving an older thread, but it's a good one and I just noticed this post. My Dad used to fish in the "strip pits" in the late 60s when we lived in Pittsburg. He pull lot's of monster bass out of them! Uh-huh. Us Kansas boys know better than to roam where we don't belong!! The Mined Land Wildlife Area in SE Kansas is 14,000+ acres of old mining areas with hundreds of strip pits peppered across them. And yes, the fishing IS amazing. That's where the latest LM state record came from. Just watch out for snakes.- Having some trouble...
If you can swing it, you might consider getting a fishing kayak. Some decent models start at around $300 and they're great for getting at fish that you can't access from shore or by larger boat. That's what I do!- WOW! Bass fishing has changed!!
While sparky bass boats are awesome, some of us also enjoy pursuing bass from less pricey watercraft... Like myself... ...and my son... Seriously, the newer fishing kayaks are extremely stable and great for getting at bass where others can't. Sometimes change is good!- Unusual places you'd love to fish
There is a small fish sanctuary cove just off of the Rideaux Canal at Jones Falls, ON, Canada. It is a warm water release from a small hydroelectric dam. The fish, HUGE Largemouth bass can be viewed from a small bridge in hordes on the sanctuary side of the bridge. There is open water to the other side of the bridge where you can fish, yet the trophy bass stay on the safe side. It's incredible to see such monsters just a few feet away and agonizing that you can't fish for them...- Having some trouble...
When the bite shut down for me this weekend, I picked up that the bass were sticking to the bottom in cover in the main lake body and that I would have to get the bait right in front of their noses. So, after drop-shotting unsuccessfully in deeper water, I went to a new location in the small inlet channel. I surmised that in the warmer and shallower water, the bass would still be on the bottom because of the post-frontal pattern, but that in a confined space I had a better chance of getting my bait closer to them. I surmised correctly! I'm not saying that I found the only answer to catching fish on Sunday, but it was AN answer and worked out for me. Good luck!- New Video! Spinnerbaits
Great video! You've given me some fresh perspectives on throwing this bait. Thanks!- Worms in my coffee!
I've been thinking about doing the same thing and putting some of my soft plastics in with coffee grounds. It might be worth a try...- Lake Erie VS Tennessee...Next WR Smallie
Then is sounds to me like the NY record is ripe for the pickin'... If you do it in a kayak, you win $5000...- Lake Erie VS Tennessee...Next WR Smallie
When was that? I have the current NY state record at 8 lbs 4 oz. (from NY DEC...) for a smallie - or, was that from PA?- great day
Oh man! I CAN'T WAIT!!! Thanks for posting the pics. The winter just won't let go up here...- Smallmouth Rivers in Oklahoma
There's no place that I know of nearby, but the Glover River 4hrs drive to the southeast close to the Ouachita Mountains is an excellent smallmouth fishery. It's beautiful scenery over there as well. The Blue River is closer to the south near Tishomingo, and supposed to have smallies, but I don't know much about the fishing there.- New York Anglers
I'm new here - saw that there were some fellow NY Anglers and so thought I'd start here. I'm an avid kayak angler in the Finger Lakes Region. A couple of my buddies and I are actually in the process of starting an informal "club" to promote the sport of freshwater kayak fishing. The technology for kayaks have changed in response to angler demands and you wouldn't believe where you can go and what you can catch while fishing from a kayak - they are incredibly stable! Here is information for our kickoff - Join us if you are interested and can make it! Here is the "official" announcement for an informal meet and greet that we have scheduled to think about forming a Western NY Kayak Fishing Association...
