Uses of a 7.0 baitcaster
Mase.... No man, I didn't read your post wrong or try to correct you. I should have stated what I was saying differently but it was intended for those who really didn't understand what the ratios mean on reels and how to somewhat determine IPT per different real....actually after I read it again, I really should have stated it differently....and BRR added something important too bout IPT with a spooled reel...my apologies

KVD Reel Vs. Code Red
When I come back from Iraq (early to mid May) I'll be able to test a new CR I purchased and I'll write a quick review bout it.

Uses of a 7.0 baitcaster
Mase....the only way that could be the case is if the spool is bigger on the reel of a 6.3 to 1 ratio than a 7 to 1 ratio (meaning 6.3(7) revolutions of the spool per 1 turn of the handle). If the spools are the same in diameter than that can't be true...there are a lot of things you can argue but math isn't one of them.

Braided lines for Light weight spinning.
Agree and Disagree w/ you BBB... I used 20# spiderwire on my first BC setup back in I think 2000. Fished day in and day out. I PCS (move) to Germany and rods get put in storage. I come back to the states in Mid '05, takes forever to get my house hold goods, winter hits when I get my fishing gear so I don't get to fish until Spring '06. Same line (never re-spooled) and no abrasion what's so ever. And the rivers and lakes here are full of rocks and hard structure...depends on who the "braid" is by.

Uses of a 7.0 baitcaster
The higher the gear ratio, the more line taken up per turn of the handle (7:1 is like 28" per turn and 5:01 just around 20" per turn I think). Also it's said that the higher ratio gives a faster line take up but not as powerfull as a lower ratio. So any bait you want to move/fish fast, the higher the ratio. Any bait you want to move/fish slow, the lower the ratio. Even tho that is controlled by the fisherman, not the reel itself. "IMO"

Braided lines for Light weight spinning.
When spiderwire first came out, I would use it for every set up I had (which I think was only 3 at the time, ultra light spinning to bc). No line twist and never broke on me. My dad back in Pensacola, FL has recently switched from FW to Inshore fishing and swears by PowerPro. He sent me some 40# that I used for Salmon fishing when I was home on R&R in late October, cast very nice, no line twist on the Diawa 4000 that I was using. The only problem I had was when I hooked into a 36" King (female) and was landing it, the line snapped at the leader >. After I sat on the fish and drugged her on land, I checked the line and looked like it had some abrasion (could have been from the leader). Ok enough of the rambling. Are there any post that someone did on Spiderwire Ultra Cast. I'm thinking bout using it for some of my rigs but keep reading mixed reviews. Thanks all.

G-Loomis reduced prices. (not joking this time)
There's one Tackle Shop...want to say in Boise, Anglers Habitat (and a few others)...that sales G Loomis on eBay for a good price and offers free shipping most of the time. Mostly fresh tho, don't find to many Saltwater rods from Loomis on eBay. Check them out

what to look for when buying a used rod??
Got to agree w/ you RW. All below IMX w/ G Loomis is good but there are other rods out there that perform better for less. I was in the same boat when I was looking for a matching rod for the Quantum CR that I just bought. For all the holding out I did, I got a custom G Loomis MB844 IMX Slate for under $180 So I guess that means I would have to take my previous statement back then. :-/

Other than black bass, what do like to fish for the most?
WOW...I thought this post would kinda keep going but died out, and I'm surprised know one included Salmon (any variety) By far the favorite to fish for when Bass season is closed in the fall. Here's a 36" (only one that season, limited time) when I came home for R&R from Iraq in late Oct '08

Are aesthetics important to you?
I would say yes, rod and reel should match for performance and for appeal. And if it really matters that much, any rod you buy you can always either customize it yourself, have someone else do it, or purchase a blank and either do it yourself, or have someone else do it. Possibilities are endless...........

what to look for when buying a used rod??
It is a plus Red...from what I've been reserching (always in the market for a new setup) G Loomis has got to have the best warranty out there. You may pay you may pony up $40 extra for the "no questions asked" but hey, who wouldn't? Anybody else now of a rod company that offers a better warranty?

what to look for when buying a used rod??
Not a bad rod (if it's in good shape) for all around use. If any rod can be used as a multi-purpose rod it's the MBR 783C. I probably wouldn't use it for swim baits (only 1/4 - 3/4 lures) but you never know until you try it. Plus w/ G Loomis no questions asked warranty you pay $130 for the rod, say something is wrong with it, pay $60 and you have a new rod in like 2 days, so you ended up paying $190 for a what, $215 rod? Could be a good deal.

Hey Everyone....Newbie in the Army
How's everyone doing? Originally from Florida, just turned 33 on March 26th. Been fishing since I was about 5. I'm currenlty serving in Iraq but stationed out of Fort Drum, NY. I love to just fish, what's biting, I'm catching. Got hooked on Salmon since I've been upstate, but still nothing like catching some nice FL Bass. The small mouth in the Black River are a blast to catch on light tackle. Hope to gain some knowledge from all the posts. Going to be stationed at Fort Sam Houston, TX this summer. Anyone from around there and have some good places to fish?

Bass Fillets
New to this site, love reading the posts...when I get back to Fort Drum after leaving Iraq (have a couple of new quantums waiting for me at home right now) and catch a couple in that "selective harvist" range. I have to give that receipe a try.
