Large mouth bass that are located on main lake structure spawn in depths of 8 to 12'. These main lake bass have been known to spawn in the tops of the trees in 50 foot of water. The bass located on main lake structure spend their entire life never having seen a shoreline.

To answer you question one must consider that you're fishing water that is only 1-3' deep. I grew up fishing the marshes of Southwest Louisiana were the average depth is only 2' deep and is covered with various types of vegetation. There are 2 tactics that produce consistently one is a Johnson Spoon and the other is a Texas Rigged worm. When rigging worms we would use at the most a 1/8 oz bullet weight and the smallest a 1/64 oz bullet weight. Bass in water this shallow tend to spook easily so long casts are required and the additional weight would give us another 25+ feet per cast.

I have 35 years experience on Toledo Bend and don't mind sharing with anyone. There is how ever one major problem I have no GPS locations, they are all in my head, so if you aint fishing with me you aint gonna find em. I know enough locations that I can give you 4 or 5 money spots and it want effect me in the least but the way I look at it is unless you really good you aint gonna fish it right any way. All metals have a minimum bend radius according to thickness and type of metal. Take the thickness of the shank of a 3/0 EWG hook, the high-carbon steel that it is made from and the radius it's bent at. This radius is below the minimum bend radius of the metal thus reducing the metals strength and causing it to become brittle. Failure is eminent, what Gamakatsu is relying on is that you don't use a single hook for extended periods. Depending on the numbers of times the hook is flexed will determine when the hook will fail, but fail it will. Also consider the times I've witnessed hook failure compared to the 10,000s of time it didn't is acceptable. But from my prospective as a manufacturing engineer with 15+ years in fabricating with all types of metals I can't set my mind at rest and use these hooks.

I wasn't using any EWG and never will But the ones I saw break were Gammy EWG hooks I've work in fabrication of detailed aircraft parts and can tell you the bend radius is entirely too tight for the diameter of the hook shank. I know plenty of people who use them and swear by them but as for me I aint using them.

One deadly technique used on Toledo Bend is to attach a split shot about 12 above the hook; this allows the worm to fall in the typical wacky technique but with added weight.

The size of the flat has nothing to do with it being productive, as with any structure the flat must have access to deep water.

My favorite location for Kentucky Bass (spots) is a fast moving creek, #1 technique is Texas Rigged Baby Brush Hog in Watermelon/Neon, and personal best is 3 pounds 3 ounces.

Last year I averaged 16 bass a day, the limit on Toledo Bend is 8 a day, so I voted almost always limit out.

The day I don't get excited over every bass I'll take up golf 8-)
