  1. Wow, that revo/all star deal is sick... I posted this in another thread but yesterday I picked up some LC pointers at Dicks for $5.48. Also they had SK red eye shads for $1.98. Some really good deals to be had...
  2. Honestly, LM bass are relatively poor fighters. They do not even compare to most of the saltwater species. Amberjack, jack crevalle, permit, bonefish...those things will hurt you. To me, bass fishing is about the hunt. I like all the techniques associated with bass fishing. Figuring out where the fish are and what they want on a particular day...the catching is almost anti-climatic. Bass fishing isn't about the fight for me. I got no problem hoisting in a "hot" 5lb LM pulled up through a hydrilla mat with 65lb power pro, after a five second fight! When I want to straight up scrap with a fish, I take my boat to the ocean.
  3. WOW - that's the second great deal reported at Dick's lately (the other was Fireline braid). I live in the sticks and there's lots of good things about that...but I got no Dicks, Academy, Bass Pro, Cabelas, etc. around. Oh - the last time I was in Plantation there was no Dick's there either, just mostly palmetto scrub...but that was in 1965 or so! ;D I went there this morning because I saw a post from some guy who bought some Sebile Swimmers at Dicks for $5.98. Those were all out though. Also, check out the price on that SK red eye: $1.98. I really don't need anymore traps, but for 2bux, I couldn't refuse. (I'm starting to sound like my wife with the shoes) You were in Plantation in 1965? It really was a plantation back then.
  4. Yeah, man. I just got back from my business trip and went to Lox this morning for a couple hours (I had a 12:00 appt). Tied into a couple beasts today. Good frog bite today until about 8:30. After that it was swimbaits. No finesse required! Sounds like a good Florida day. Kind of surprised you were out there. It was raining here the entire day. Not fun. Didn't rain on me at all when fishing. It started drizzling a little bit as I was driving home (~10:15). Actually, it was a perfect morning...overcast, light winds, about 65deg.
  5. I bought six LC pointers this morning for $5.48 from Dicks Sporting Goods. Below is the receipt.
  6. If only had five to use (South Florida): 7' MH/F, 6.3:1 baitcast (worms, beavers, traps) 7'6" MH/F, 7.0:1 baitcast (frogs, jigs) 7'6" MH/F, 5.4:1 baitcast (plastic swimbait) 7'6" H/F, 7.0:1 baitcast (flip) 7' M/XF, spinning (finesse) In actuality I have one dedicated rod for worms, beavers, and traps. Although not totally optimal, I could use the same set up for all three if I had to. I think the five would vary alot by locale, also.
  7. I've got three of them now. If they stay $99, I'll have a bunch more. The best sub-$100 value in bass fishing, IMO.

  9. Awesome Eric! Now let's get out there and burn up a few of those baits!
  10. Somehow I think we'd be the ones netting and photographing all your big fish. Palm Beach Gardens. You are very close to Loxahatchee Refuge. I'm not sure how long you are down for, but you should try and get out there a couple times. Lox is largemouth heaven. This thread shows some of the fish you can catch there. http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?num=1288493649 Also, the everglades canal systems (holiday park, sawgrass) really start cranking out bass this time of year. You can have triple digit days, if you hit it right. I'm out of state right now on business and really itchin to get back out there fishing....
  11. Yeah. I've got an old zara spook that i've had as long as I've been fishing. That thing has caught hundreds of bass and will likely catch a few hundred more. They've always been inexpensive and last a long time. In pure "bang for buck" value, the spook is pretty tough to beat.
  12. Dwight, Looks like you're in my back yard... Nice work. You've been catching some monster fish over the past year or so. Enjoy your stay here and try not to be too hard on our poor bass.
  13. I agree, do not force them to stay fishing if they don't want. My five year old boy is good for about a half hour max, my seven year old daughter about two (or ten minutes if they're not biting) When I go with the kids in the boat, I make it a point to make it interesting for them. That might mean 15 minutes of fishing that day if the fish are not biting fast. Picking clams/shells at the shore. Taking pictures. Maybe just run the boat slowly looking for alligators/snakes. Using the binoculars, etc... My kids are much more interested in fishing since they've got their own tackle boxes. I give them each tons of plastics. They like to make their own "bugs" (they call them) by dipping the plastics making their own colors. They cut colored pipe cleaners and stick them into the old worms/senkos to look like centipedes, scorpions, etc. I've given each of them a bunch of old spinnerbaits...they paint the heads, put eyes on them, and pick out colors/size skirts/blades. My daughter has a Minnesota Vikings spinnerbait...purple head, gold blades/skirt. I'm pretty sure it will never catch a fish, but it the first thing she wants tied on when we go fishing. It's become a craft project for them. It also means I've prematurely introduced them to the bait monkey, which is something I will have to learn to live with...
  14. Good luck in the KOTG tourney this weekend, Jack. Wish I was there to help you, but work calls. I'll be back to weigh you down for the February qualifier. Good luck to everyone else as well: Bruce/Kenny/Dan/Salmi/Glades/etc....
  15. I do better in these conditions looking for a reaction bite in close proximity to cover. A jig near rocky dropoffs, pitching a beaver w/ tungston weight in/around dense weeds, and a noisy trap ripped thru grass seem to work best for me under cold Florida (i.e. water temps under 60) conditions
  16. For $250, you should be able to get a new Avid rod and used curado reel. Tough to beat that combo without spending more.
  17. Just put in an order myself....thanks for the post!
  18. Yeesh, Mike. You're wracking up the frequent flyer miles over to China lately, aren't you. Hope you have a good flight, thats a beast of a trip. I'm not looking forward to my flight over there next year. Yeah, it's no fun. I've got business class on the way back, but I'm stuck in coach on the way there. Not much fun for guys our size. Bringing some more reels with me again, though. Gonna have my vendor paint me up a couple of pearl white reels to match my veritas rods....
  19. Nice fish Robert! You get her at the spot you were telling me about? We need to hook up when I return from my China trip (leave tomorrow for 2 weeks).
  20. I keep a yearly journal, each year starting out with a new composition pad. Each trip I record by jotting out a crude map and recording spots I fished, the time at each spot, what lure used, water temp. Also, for each trip record barometer, basic weather (sunny/cloudy/etc) and wind direction. I usually record the data that evening. I find this exercise helpful...to go through a play-by-play account of your day. Make notes about things that worked well/things you maybe should have tried but didn't/etc. I used to do this when I was trying to become a scratch golfer. Go through a stroke-by-stroke account of each round...helps you identify areas of your game which need work. I think it has been very beneficial to me. For example, if I'm fishing Loxahatchee and I've got 65 degree water with a west wind I can go through the logs, find similiar conditions and make a note of areas where I caught big fish. That will give me a starting point to help set up a game-plan for my upcoming trip.

  23. You're a smarter man than me. I went to lox yesterday..pretty much a waste of time. Didn't catch a fish until about noon. Found a nice little pod of fish and caught about eight fish, from noon til 1. Those fish turned off and so did I. The wind/cold did not make fishing very enjoyable....a constant 25mph.
