  1. not only does it count, but i am hoping that side imaging gives me a leg up on the competition this year for the King of the Glades series. it is mainly canal fishing in the glades, but i am certain there are rocks, humps, cars and anything else that will hold fish that will show up on the screen. Bruce, I would be really interested in seeing some side imaging shots from Alligator Alley. You just know there are cars/appliances/boats/etc...laying down there...
  2. If you're set on a baitcast setup and are firm on the $100 price, I would give a good look at the abu veritas. Warning: their ratings are light relative to other rods. A veritas M is comparable to most MH. A MH veritas would have just about the optimum amount of backbone for carolina rigging, IMO.
  3. For me it's tubes. Some guys (esp up north, it seems) catch the heck out of the fish with tubes. I've tried em a few times and I don't think I've ever caught a fish on one. Now, I've caught hundreds of bass on beaver baits...and to be fair, I probably haven't given the tubes an honest chance (I haven't fished one in over a year). I just have a lot more confidence with a sweet beaver/ugly otter if I'm pitching baits to cover...
  4. I've been proliferating my arsenal of baitcasting equipment over the past two years...I now have ~15bc setups. The best advice I can give is if you already have a M action setup, I would concentrate on MH or heavier for future purchases. I use MH or higher ~98% of the time. The few times I use M action BC anymore is for launching traps/shallow cranks in open water (i.e. lake okeechobee, open water bass feeding on schooling shad). My finesse rigs are spinning. My $0.02.
  5. Nice report Dale. yeah, the afternoon has been better (for me, anyway) Anyone been out there lately? I haven't been in the boat in nine days. It's killing me...my last four trips to Lox I've got 5 bass over 5lbs... I've been working silly hours (past midnight every night and weekends) preparing to release my new project tomorrow. Afterwards, I'm taking a long, much needed chunk of time off...anyone planning on heading out there, let's hook up.
  6. yeah I know the levelwind doesn't spin during the cast. The reel seems "smoother" when running the pawl dry. You're correct there is no logical reason to coorelate that to casting distance. It's probably in my head (imaginary)...
  7. Thanks! This is a really good tip! I'm servicing a bunch of reels right now...I'm going to try this on one or two. It seems like the "drier" I run the worm gear, the better casting distance I get. Of course, I understand the downside of running the worm/pawl too dry....
  8. My wife got me the Chuck Woolery moto lure sometime back. She saw it on an infomercial and knew I just had to have it. Thanks honey... :-X Her heart was in the right place.

  11. BINGO. No one is saying stop checking travelers. My main problem is that what they are doing is reactive and completely ineffective. Yes, we all know we forfeit some of our personal freedoms when we travel... But it is repulsive to me to give up SO MUCH of our personal liberties and dignity to support a program which is ineffective. The TSA has not thwarted one attack.
  12. It seems like what they're doing now is going to lead to a bunch of lawsuits as well...
  13. So, what if a guy who from the Middle East, but born in America was pulled aside and decided to sue airport and what not for violation of civil right? Then what? I'm a guy from the Middle East born in America. I'm 25% Lebanese. Please interview me! I've got nothing to hide.
  14. Big Viking fan here (I grew up in St Cloud, MN) Childress had to go. He completely lost the team. Yesterday was pathetic...Childress going at it with Favre. Favre going at it with Bevell. Ray Edwards going at it with Asher Allen/Chris Cook. "Anonymous sources" going to the press and saying the players don't respect Childress... I'm glad he's gone. He really was a dummy...He's the walking embodiment of the "Peter Principle".
  15. Exactly! Your scenario just demonstrates the short-sighted, reactive response towards this issue... Richard Reed tries blowing up a plane with a shoe bomb...now we all have to remove shoes. Some joker tries blowing up a plane with explodable skivives...now we all must subject our wifes/children/grandmothers/nuns to naked scanners/pat downs. So follow these reactive responses to their natural conclusion...What is this administration going to do when one of these yahoos tries blowing up a plane by sticking a bomb up his butt?? The solution is simple...do what the Israelis do...interview everybody. Pull aside the "higher risk" subjects for further interrogation. Fill the airport with bomb sniffing dogs.
  16. Can't disagree with side imaging. Power pole has to be pretty high on the list also. Especially for those of us (i.e. south florida) who fish windy, shallow bowls 12 months a year.

  19. I could have bought a bass lake with the money I've dropped on my South Florida properties...
  20. I'm probably in the minority here, but I prefer spinning gear for C-rig. I grew up "bottom bouncing" for Walleye in Minnesota and we always used spinning gear. I think the ergonomics of bottom fishing 6' or deeper are just better with spinning equipment. Easier to feel the bottom, IMO. I have 7'6" H/F spinning rod that I use for saltwater/bass C-rig. Anyway, something for you to consider if you are getting a dedicated C-rig outfit...
  21. LOL. If Ike hasn't broken it, the rest of us probably don't need to worry about it. BTW..I got a couple more fish on my veritas yesterday just chuckin around the golf course pond. I really like this thing, so far.
  22. Anyone fish Carmen's trail Nov 6th? I'd like to give it a shot on December 4th, if it's for sure on...Can someone confirm? Thanks.
  23. My cranking stick is a 7'6" M. If I had to do it again, I'd go 7'6" MH. It launches baits a mile, but a little whippy for deep cranking and ripping traps thru grass, IMO.
  24. I like flouro for finesse (worm/shaky/pitching) and crankbaits because it has low visibility, low stretch and, most importantly, (as Josh mentioned) it sinks. I use braid for virtually everything else except topwaters (mono).
  25. I think the issue here might be the smaller diameter of the 10-12lb flouro leader that you are using. Just a guess here...but perhaps the 180 bend on the leader is being pinched down to such a small radius that it becomes a stress concentrator (kinked). If that kink breaks, you are going to get back a little a little club of braid with a frayed tag end. Sounds like what you are describing... As I mentioned above...I use this knot if the leader diameter is large: ~0.50mm diameter (i.e. 30lb flouro leader material). On applications I need smaller diameter flouro (i.e. finesse conditions) I just go straight flouro- mainly because I'm nervous about hooking a big fish with such a small amount of shock material.
