  1. ^^^ Any of the mid range quality reels will handle braid. All you need is a quality reel, nothing special.
  2. Check to sure the spool is not over-filled. Fill to about 1/8" below the spool lip or even with the bevel. If you decide to try braid, be sure to use backing or at least some tape to avoid slippage.
  3. No reel is designed to be intentionally tossed around, I'd suggest avoiding that practice. Bang for your buck wise the Pflueger President is hard to beat and the prior model is on clearance for as little as $40 (buy 2).
  4. x2 Fishability shouldn't be affected. If the handle play is a deal breaker, your best bet is to invest in a higher end reel rathe than tinker.
  5. For round reels look no further than ABU Ambassadeurs and Calcuttas. The Peerless 9 is a work horse but not very refined. The Pflueger is a Pure Fishing Product as is ABU. That does not necessarily mean thay are the same reel. The Pflueger gets good reviews especially at sale prices.
  6. ??????? looks like someone had a little gin with the tonic water and made a wrong turn. lol
  7. I haven't tried it, but some builders have ground down the trigger on some seats to just a nub. Another possible way to fabricate what you describe would be to use a spinning seat with a skeleton seat trigger behind it. There would be a gap you may want to fill with cork or something.
  8. Our next meeting is on Wed 5/2. We'll be back to the first Tues of each month after that.
  9. Why not just rent a boat a few times a year? http://lakehopatcong.com/boatrentals.html http://nysparks.com/parks/145/amenities-activities.aspx
  10. I think one of he better arguments for fluoro is feeling takes on semi slack line. Like Snook says though you can certainly get away with all braid. The difference in bites probably won't mean much outside of a tournament situation. If you really want to up your game concentrate on learning to locate fish in varying conditions/seasons.
  11. x2 You can tape the threads and wrap the feet as a type of shim as well if needed.
  12. In addition, a negative comment/review has a more dramatic affect on a business than several positive ones. It's just human nature. Someone can come on a forum and vent, and then have the issue satisfactorily resolved subsequently, but the damage is done.
  13. Trimming length off the butt of any blank slows the action and decreases the power. 4" off the butt of a 7'1" blank is not radical by any means and may get you close to what you're looking for. However, the stripping is a lot of labor and there are enough blanks to choose from that you can have what you're looking for built from scratch. You'll spend less and get a better job in the end. I'd be happy to work with you, but you're in good hands with shfishinsticks as well.
  14. Even at retail the President is one of the best bang for your buck deals in a spinner. On sale, it's almost a no brainer.
  15. They are mechanically unchanged. Cabelas has the 67xx w/spare spool for $39.99. Load up on them.
  16. The AR should be lubed with a light coat of oil applied with a swab. Be sure not to leave fuzz behind.
  17. I think I know the noise you refer to and it does sound bad. The AR usually takes the brunt of any shock not absorbed by the drag. What I believe is happening is that the clutch is being only partially disengaged so you wouldn't hear a normal click, but rather the spool bearing retiner/drive pin skipping across the bottom of the pinion. I'd tie on to a weight of some kind and try a setting motion with your hand on the grip behind the reel and see if you can duplicate the problem. I'm pretty certain the spool will stay engaged. I know this is not a grip you'll use to fish with but may give some insight as to what needs adjusting.
  18. Not hidden by any means, but the Mohawk River / Barge Canal has some great fishing. Each pool between the locks fishes like it's own little reservoir. Going north Round Lake and Ballston Lake can be good.
  19. Tests have shown that there is little difference in the amount of stretch between mono and fluoro especially in leader length like Catt said . When you drag the weight, the bait will float up and lift the line off the bottom and one of fluoros advantages is abrasion resistance. I'm not sure a leader's length of fluoro would weigh down a bait noticably. Most of my leaders are fluoro but matched with braid. With a mono mainline it probably doesn't matter much either way.
  20. Loosen the thumb screw and rotate the side plate, I believe clockwise (front up). It should come off easily, don't force anything.
  21. More is not necessarily better, but too few hamper performance. The goal is to have the line path match the blank's bend as closely as possible using the minimum number of guides. Micro guides on a casting rod sometimes require a few extra due to the low height, but some use more than need because they are unnecessarily concenrned about the line touching the blank while landing fish. As long as the line does not go below the blank, no harm is done by the line touching when the rod is heavily loaded.
  22. It sounds as if the clutch is partially disengaged and the pin is clacking across the bottom of the pinion. Check your grip on the rod/reel and see if the heel of your hand is touching the release button. When setting the hook it is common to clamp your grasp down on the reel and if you're palming you are likely pressing somewhat on the release. When you crank the reel, the clutch is resetting as it should.
  23. A faster action is not necessarily stiffer, power would have more afffect on that. I prefer a little faster action for ripping traps through the weeds, but for straight crankin' Mod is the way to go.
  24. I you haven't, learn to cast with your back hand. A lot of times when the boater is beating the banks he will neglect thye back side of targets and you can hit them on the way by. You have to be looking ahead and time your casts just right. If all else fails, drag a c-rig behind the boat and you'll get bit eventually. If the boater is really pounding all the good targets, I sometimes fish off the opposite side and sometimes catch a bigger fish sitting out deeper.
