  1. To each his own Al, we all have our opinions but they aren't necessarily right or wrong. There are pleeeenty of rod, reel, line, and lure manufacturers to keep most of us happy. Trevor, I say heavy because the Daiwa Steez is nearly half the weight but also twice the price. Looking at another flagship model from a major manufacturer, a Shimano Calais DC incorporates far more technology than Ardent's xs1000, with a price tag to match. I say solid because if i were to drop a steez, i'd probably cry and bubblewrap my entire room to avoid another heartbreak, but with an Ardet i know id be able to shrug it off and know itll live to cast another day. Not to mention other high end reels are outwardly beautiful and to most buyers, looks can be a big factor. That said, if you choose to support our country with what you mount on your rod, I'm all for it
  2. My Curado e7 came factory set with two brakes on and 4 off. If your backlashing or getting a bit of overrun on the beginning of the cast, pop the sideplate and engage a brake or two depending on how bad it is. If the startup on beginning of the cast is clean and overrun occurs near the end when the lure is slowing down, not speeding up, tighten the cast control knob. Usually, for normal conditions, if you hold the rod straight out and reel in freespool, the lure should fall slowly to the ground and no overrun should occur when it hits the ground. Make sure it actually lands on solid ground because water cushions it and it may be a bit loose. After that its all in the thumb. Yesterday for some reason i was dropshotting and i would get minor overruns on the beginning of the casts, so i added one brake for the first time since purchasing it. From then on my casts and distance were perfect. Just for the heck of it, i disengaged all of the brakes but kept the cast control knob the same and as soon as i lifted my thumb from the spool and the rig flew 5 feet everything came to a halt and i was reminded of my first days with a baitcaster in my hands as i sat there and picked out a mean backlash ;D
  3. That was my exact suspicion. They just mentioned revo+vendetta im pretty sure. Its just like how abu reels come with a slip of paper advising the buyer to spool up with stren, spiderwire, or trilene for best results because pure fishing owns all of em, lol
  4. You might want to look into abu garcia. The revos have some beefy drag, are pretty solid, and you get a free pair of Wiley X sunglasses
  5. I used to have a shimano brand spinning reel mounted on my shimano compre rod with the nice cutout in the foregrip that i really like because it's comfortable and exposes the tip of your finger to the blank for extra sensetivity. I bought a pflueger supreme to mount on the shimano rod and it doesnt work out as nicely. The distance between the support arm on the reel and cutout in the foregrip is too great and you either have to stretch out your hand or have only your pinky finger below the reel's support arm. I like to match brands between rod and reel when possible.
  6. I certainly can't think of one. You always want balanced tackle, but brands aren't part of that equation. Unless there's something I'm missing, the important factors are line size, type and weight of lures used, balance and other factors not related to brand. In response to this and Brian, according to abu's website the vendetta rods are factory tuned to balance with revo's. Not sure how much truth there is in that statement by abu since there are all different weights and sizes of revo's but supposedly they're meant to match. Thats not to say you cant mix brands.
  7. Heavy, bulky, ugly, overpriced, limited selection. They seem like they'd last a longs time though, super solid. Im not sure why youd get one besides the american made factor.
  8. I have the xl7116c and so far like it alot. It is very light and sensitive for the price point. I talked to a representative at bassjam 09 who said that Lamiglas really hadnt put too much focus on improving some of their other bass lineup such as the Certified Pro series and instead had been putting technology into these new excel rods. I have tossed 8" hudds on mine, rated to 2 ounces, without problems but its always nice to know that you have a quality american made product with a lifetime warranty behind it. I'm not sure how much of a difference it makes, but im pretty certain that these rods also don't feature fuji guides if thats a big deal to you. The absence of a foregrip isnt noticeable and looks pretty cool. High quality cork and the reel seat/ grip is comfortable. The hook keeper is in a weird location unless dropshotting but since one end's not attached you can slide t-rigged plastics in with ease.
  9. I took a trout fishing trip from shore with 5 rods and it was a b. One ultralight spinning for soaking bait, one medium spinning rod for smaller lures, one light baitcaster for larger lures, a fly rod to have some fun casting around if the bite was off, and a swimbait rod with a huddleston if the big bass bug were to tag along. I spent more time fumbling with rods and tackle than anything else plus we hiked about 6 miles. When you only take one rod it can be more productive because you can cover more water and put all your focus into what you're doing. I almost always fish only one rod for shore fishing bass. Usually my 7' Lamiglas certified pro xc704 because it covers a huge spectrum
  10. The pontoon floatube is regularly $500 and a couple months ago was only $300 so I added it to my wishlist just to keep track of it. The price went up to $350 but for some reason it didnt update on my wishlist or when i added it to my cart so i saved $50. Loophole, yeeeeaah!!
  11. A pontoon float tube that i can hit the rivers and small ponds with Pontoon float tube accessories Some megatrike jigs Megatrike attractant Rage Craws Rod Tube Minnow Cooler Power Pro Cold weather gloves Some extra cash that ill combine with my savings to go towards a new reel
  12. He's a hardass and id hate to fish or hunt with him but hes admirable nontheless.

  14. This isn't the best time of year to try your luck at catfishing
  15. Definitely, I'm not too proud to fish for minnows as long as it's fishing. Fishing for several species with different tackle also helps you become an overall better angler. I caught my first surf perch the other day.
  16. Lol, you mean Gary's son. both are Yamamoto's
  17. If you spool up with 65lb braid it can double as your frog reel, but if its clear no less than 20lb flouro. Mono doesn't have the abrasion resistance of flouro
  18. The owner plastics at my local tackle store slipped out of their little plastic holds and were even worse off than if they were packaged as normal.
  19. I love healthy, full bodied bass like those
  20. Well stop the production of low speed "cranking" reels I guess, lol. I think cranks work well at high speeds because they truly do trigger a reaction from the bass that sees it out of the corner of their eye or feels it coming through the area. Plus if everybody is retrieving at standard medium pace that the bass have grown accustomed to, something a little different just might produce a strike.
  21. You have a good point! For me it's the technique, I want the biggest on the lightest spinning or fly(kings are bait and wait, not my desired way of fishing). Exactly. For me it's technique too. And all types of fish and fishing offer challenges. Beyond that,or maybe beneath it, lies my intense and unabashed love for the natural world, which I cannot find in a fish farm -going back to the original post. In keeping with the original post--You have a choice to fish: 1). A 50acre man-made pond regularly stocked with factory rainbow trout. They have warped fins and are easy to catch. They average 5lbs (22") with some reaching 12lbs (28+"). Natural foods will not maintain such a fishery, so they have to supplemented. 2). 8 miles of wild trout stream that encompasses flat meadows, forest, a canyon, and beaver ponds. The brook trout in this water average about 8" with top brookies hitting around 14". The rainbows average about 13" with top fish around 18". The browns average about 13" too, but there are some over 20" (3+lbs). There are three over 25" (6+lbs). #1 is easy to make, relatively easy to maintain, easily drawing paying "anglers" virtually guaranteed BIG fish. Don't forget your camera! In #2 novice anglers would be hard pressed to have much real success on. Success here requires knowledge, understanding, skill, and ingenuity. It's riches are just not easy to realize. Which would you find most satisfying, after the first day? After the 10th day? After that? My sentiments exactly. Ive trout fished other waters like eagle lake where the trout also grow big, but are wild. I dont mind studying the baitfish patterns, water temperature, seasonal migration of the fish, oxygen levels, and the whole list of factors that go into a successful day on the water because when all is said and done it makes it that much more rewarding.
  22. Exactly my point. Catching a huge bass that grew that big out in the wild against all the odds is something to be proud of. I'm just saying that IF big bass WERE to be stocked, much of the enjoyment of the sport we all love would be lost.
  23. I just got back from a trout fishing trip to lake amador with mixed feelings. While the trout average 4-5 pounds and give a few drag peeling runs and spectacular leaps when hooked, they are all stocked. Most of them have little nubs instead of full pectoral fins and the upper and lower quarters of their tail fins are shaved down from growing up in holding tanks. Ive always loved to catch trout and admire their beauty, but these huge fish just don't have the same awe inspiring effect that a healthy 14 inch trout would. If ten pound bass were stocked would you really feel proud to catch one? IMO it kind of ruins it but I guess its neat that fisheries such as Amador exist for those who prefer easier to catch size over anything else.
  24. Yea, it's called Lakewood neighborhood and you just go straight from the central Windsor exit. There's 2 man made lakes with limited public shore access. Just a heads up that people may stop you if they don't recognize you because your supposed to be a resident or be fishing with a resident. I used to have 3-4 people ask me if I lived there when my dad first moved in but now that they recognize me it's not an issue. March is probably my favorite month.
