  1. piles of reels - they all work well - new curado and tatula cast well but my old Ardent 1000's and my shimano 250 cast equally well if not further - but my all time favorite was my old Langley Lurecast with 9# tournament silk - I learned to cast with that reel and Jason Lucas's advice.
  2. I have a 6' H Star rod I use for close combat under branches frogging
  3. 832 sinks - sufix performance braid is my choice for frogs
  4. small jigs and grubs and big swimbaits - and frogs of course and a boing or spook
  5. everyone has their favorite set-ups - I use a 7'11" Rick Clunn rod and an old browning 5:1 reel for deep cranking - it's an okay set-up - I like the length for long casts which are important for getting maximum depth.
  6. I rarely walk a frog even when I was fishing them over 200 days a year - never walked one as wide as a spook but there have been many days when it outfished the spook in open water - of course the spook has had many days it beat the frog. I wasn't talking about hookset success rather I was saying once hooked on a frog they seldom throw it - which they can and do with a spook.
  7. caught lots of bass in open water on frogs - usually average better size than other options (spook excepted) can't throw the hooks as easily as they do trebles.
  8. You have to abide by the tourney rules and your own ethics, others will do what they will - I've witnessed too much angst over this when I fished tournaments every week - for myself I abided by their rules and realized I had no control over other folks integrity.
  9. mod. rods - heavy power - moderate (slower) action - taught many folks frog fishing, the rods speed was the most important part of the paradigm - especially for those who haven't frogged alot.
  10. They do well, very well in murky water
  11. stretch them out and fish them - the longer you fish them the better they get as the salt leaves they float higher
  12. I agree with Rojas - but - it took a while to get it right - keep throwing with braid and you'll figure it out - when the bite is on they choke it down immediately - I think it is more of knowing what kind of strike you're getting - a heavy power rod with moderate action was the secret for me and my clients - a fast rod will take the frog away - keep on chucking
  13. In that situation I use - long casts - fine line - small natural colored/shaped lures
  14. Attitudes have changed about alcohol and boats/fishing - years ago it wasn't much of an issue and many of us drank while fishing, but faster boats, more crowded waterways and terrible accidents changed mine and many others habits. I haven't drank while running a boat for many years.
  15. I still love my Ardent 1000's after several years and thousands of fish - they say built in U.S.A.
  16. Keep at it - you'll find what works for you - there are ideas all over the map about it - if you feel the fish stick him and keep cranking
  17. I have 4 1000's - still working and casting great after several years of hard usage. Great customer service
  18. use big baits - use big baits - catch fewer fish but bigger ones - or The One
  19. I have fished for bass for a long time - One thing I've learned about this subject is that I can only control how I treat the fish.
  20. Practice - practice - practice
  21. I have rods that go back over 50 yrs. the glass rods for sure get a little more soupy over time - not sure about the graphite ones - I've been fishing a 30 yr old graphite rod lately when I need a limber rod - I feel it is a little more limber than when new - but my memory is suspect.
