  1. GatorNation, Are you referring to the Lamiglas Excel ?
  2. Just got back from from the Portland OR show. Bass gear was thin as usual but if you're able to go they have, W & M Skeet Reese rods to show ( very yellow ), A full line of Shimano rods and reels ( yes they had Cumaras and Cores you Shimano die hards ) St Croix, Dobyn's ( See Willie Nelson at the Ranger Boats display ) Temple Fork Outfitters ( bass ), Okuma, Diawa ( some ) and Lamiglas with the new Excels. Super Hot prices at the Quantum Reel table !!!! Loomis was a no show. Every one was friendly and very helpful. I picked up 5 new Excels at the Bob's booth at a show special price. I should have my first trip to use them this week. It was well worth the drive. FYI
  3. Telescopic rods were initially designed to accomodate the rod lockers of the day. The tolerances have to be exact. Now that most " Pros " run 20 to 21 foot rigs with lockers that accept 8 foot sticks, many manufactures are moving to one piece sticks. Look at the increase in the number of 7'9" and 7'11" sticks offered now. One piece rods are lighter and less expensive to manufacture. I run an 18 foot boat and have to leave my one piece flippin sticks on the deck when I trailer it to an from. I am of the belief, if you can transport it, go one piece but telescopic rods are more than fine.
  4. I won one. I gave it to a kid who was starting out. One bearing only. You can do much, much better for the money. I would not suggest this reel if you have to pay for it. I would hate to see you disappointed. Good shopping.
  5. Goose52, You are the man. I forgot Delong made them. For those of you who may not know it, this was imo the original senko type bait in 1977. I couldn't find them after that. Strange, I don't recall having DSL internet back then. Stan Fagerstrom was an advocate of this bait and caught some huge stringers with it. Thanks !
  6. I saw Gary Dobyns use a treble on his buzzbait at Shasta about 7 years ago or so on an FLW segment. It worked for him in open water where spotted bass were slashing his buzzer. Let me/us know how it works.
  7. I guess Luhr Jenson bought the rights to the design and name in the 70's. Anyone still have any Weedless Witches ? Or a photo ? Come on Goose52, come though on this one.
  8. It's called a Super Dooper by South Bend. It was popular as a trout lure in the 60's. Caught a bunch of rainbows on them in the Deschutes river in Central Oregon when I was a kid. They sold for 49 cents. Brings back memories.
  9. Anytime I fish a jig on 10 lb or less the spinning rod gets the job. My buddies and I like Hula Grubs which is more of a Jig than grub (spider jig ) for smallmouth and spinning rules for that application.
  10. Old timer's still use Tennesee handles. My first dropshot rod is a Lamiglas XST701. The handle is not cork but is a woven graphite tubing. You tape the reel on as mentioned. Check out Jann's Netcraft on the net for a look. It's kind of a personal preference thing. One advantage is you can place the reel anywhere you want for the balance point you like. Smallmouth guides in the big T made it popular in the late 70's and into the early 80's.
  11. I owned one with a Mitchell 300 when I was in highschool. Trout fishing. Whoops , you said spin cast not spinning. It was common see them with a Zeco 303 spincast reel. It often used for trout and pan fish in the days of water bobbers.
  12. I tried Vanish Transition. It was supposed to turn gold in the sunlight to make it easier to see strikes. Then I realized it was a waste of money......I live in Washington state. What sun ?
  13. I CAN'T BELEIVE I TOOK THE TIME TO SCROLL THROUGH THIS THREAD ! They make a new patch for this addiction guys. Gum is on the way. I hope you all have read your home owner's insurance policies. Many policies only cover sporting goods equipment up to $500.00 0r $1000.00 and require a binder for property beyond that. At least if you have a fire you can show the adjuster this thread to prove you had it. Hey Road Warrior, I still have my two 5'6" glass pistol grip Lews Speed sticks. My fishing partner of 32 years and I have a nostalgia day once a year. We use an original Big O, an Okie Bug spinnerbait and Mann's jelly worms. If I only had my 1972 Terry Basser boat back. No I never did own a baby blue short sleeve jumpsuit, just the hover hat. ;D ;D ;D
  14. I throw 1/8 ounce Speed Traps with bait casting all the time. I even threw Cordell Little O's on BC gear years back. I do use spinning for balsa shadraps if it's windy. A limber rod, Lamiglas XC661 or Loomis CBR843 makes loading the rod easier.
  15. My buddy and I want to hit Green Peter this year. Any of you Western Oregon guys have any experience and or thoughts on a time frame ? When does it hit full pool ? It looks like Riffe Lake in Washington. What's more prevelant, smallies or largemouth ? Thanks in advance.
  16. This year I hope to improve my dropshot skills and experiment with the flip shot. I had some success with a jerkbait last year and would like to expand on that. Good 2010 season to everyone !
  17. I fish some pretty rocky bottoms and normal drop shot weights can bankrupt me so I moved to hollow core pencil lead like we use for steelhead drift fishing. Just crimp it on. You cut to the weight you need so it's very versatile. I put a slight bent curve in the weight to make it less prone to snagging. I was mostly concerned with line twist. I asked about this system a couple months ago and I found others use this method. It's a major money saver. We can buy 3/16 or 1/4 coils or by the foot. The fact the weight is crimped helps telegraph the contact up the line.
  18. Lamiglas Certifed Pro with Revo Premiers and Stella spins but I would have to be transported to El Salto to pick them up and break in each reel, one per day.
  19. My experience is with clear #6 and #8 and I like it. It doesn't seem too stiff in comparison to some other lines I have used. What a deal @ a buck a spool. Luckee
  20. As light as you can get away with and stay in contact with the bottom. 1/8 to 3/8 in most cases.
  21. Still do after 31 years. Try the Jumbo frog in temps below 55 degrees. At least give it a chance it spite of the negs.
  22. Looks like most of your rods are 6-6. I would suggest you don't go less than than a 7 footer. The GLX and IMX are top of the line but fairly to very expensive. A 7'6" will give you distance and leverage and be less cumbersome than an 8 footer. Lots of 7'3" options out there. You should be able to find a quality stick for 110.00 to 170.00 new. Nice reel choice.
  23. kimber is a man after my own heart. I have 6 Lews speed spools, the Chevy 327 of reels. I can do my own repairs and they just work !
  24. I own reels under 6 different brand names. Some are over 25 years old and still in weekly use. Before you try to pick a brand, think of it this way. Performance and Features to cost ratio, multplied by parts and service. I will not bash a brand unless they misrepresent their product BUT I have found one brand that I still like has demonstrated a poor service response. That influenced me to move to another brand that "out scored" this brand. I am luckier than most in that my local tackle dealer stands behind what they sell to the Nth degree. They also get a substantial portion of my overtime check.
