  1. If you check out ebay or on this site you can get great deals on some really nice reels and rods. I would personally do that before getting a Tourney Special.
  2. I have the Coastal. Its just a Tierra that has been treated for corrosion resistance. I love it! Has very strong gearing, as I use it often for catching big Tautog out of rocks. Casts great. Never given me any problems.
  3. I just bought a tierra to try for next year. I hope I don't have that same luck w/ them. How small are the sharks and what species, most sharks do not fight very hard, they pull like a John Deere tractor, only smaller sharks that fight are spinners and they are very acrobatic. I have a Tierra 3000 I use for inshore use, I don't believe that reel has enough horsepower for steady shark fishing, I'm not surprised it failed. It isn't my favorite reel, but overall it's a good reel and I have caught some quality fish on it, I will add that it is the only reel I own that has never produced a wind knot, that in itself is a great bonus.
  4. I was thinking about a 2000 for dropshotting. What size rod do you have that on and how do you like that setup? How does such a small reel handle fluorocarbon, is the spool wide enough? My dad had two Daiwa Coastal (Tierra) spinning reels he bought this year already fail after maybe 20 times fishing for small sharks. I would stay away from Daiwa spinning reels, but thats just me.
  5. How is Sunline Super natural mono? Compared to Sufix Elite, how are they handling wise, strength wise? I used Sufix last year and I like it alot, but Sunline has piqued my curiosity.
  6. I think St Croix Legend Tournament are in that price range, but I don't know much about them.
  7. 1/124 oz jig with one Power Maggot on it. Best sunfish lure ever.
  8. What are your opinions on Sufix Fuse braid?
  9. The new prodigy spinning reel is also very ugly.

  11. I just tie a uni-knot or a loop knot, and thats it. I never use snaps in freshwater, and I don't feel it hinders me in any way. I use swivels, but never snaps in freshwater.
  12. I have a HMX I use for flipping and frogging and I LOVE it. Great sensitivity, nice components. Very pretty rod, as well. I actually just got the new BPS catalog today and saw that rod. It looks like the perfect rod for wading the little streams around my house and catching smallmouth and rock bass. If I had the kind of dough to blow, I'd pair that with a Saros 2000 and some 4 lb Elite and have one sick stream combo. But alas, I have not the financial means to blow $240 on a stream combo.
  13. I can actually remember being pretty young and being bored at fishing. When fishing, my dad would ask if I wanted to go back home, but I always said "no". I thought I would let him down or hurt his feelings! I endured seasickness for him too. I vividly remember reeling in mahi mahi feeling sick as a dog in the Florida keys, but I said nothing because I was embarrassed. After a while, I began to LOVE fishing and now I cannot get seasick even if I tried. So yes there is hope!
  14. Ardent XS1000 on eBay. Very light (lighter than advertised), very smooth, casts AWESOME. Near zero backlashes. For me, it is insanely comfortable to palm. 100% USA made. Right down to the bolts and packaging. Even the lubricants! I have stripped it down and it is solid. Two complaints are the drag is not the smoothest out of the box. I don't honestly think it will lose any fish though. It is made of a material much like Quantum Ceramic drags. I just cleaned it real good, hit it with some silicone spray (not sure how to lube a ceramic drag), and its much smoother now. And the other complaint as others have said is the palming side plate has a very, very small gap in between it and the frame. Hasn't given me any performance problems yet.
  15. I am in the same position as you. Searching, not that I have any problems with Shimano spinning reels. I love them! But, I found mostly negative things about Daiwa spinning reels.
  16. Mainly, I saltwater fish. When I saltwater fish, I mainly reef fish. When I reef fish, I use braid, period. Its sensitivity and low stretch are undeniably crucial to successful bottom fishing. Setting the hook in 120 feet of water with mono would need some serious swinging, but with braid just a little pop! and you're good. Freshwater fishing, I usually like mono. I have had braid dig in and ruin lots of casts, so I just use mono. But of course I use braid for flipping and frogging. I still have my doubts when fishing bottom contact baits if braid would be the better choice. But overall, I just don't like the way braid casts. To me, it doesn't flow off the spool like mono. When throwing reaction baits, I only use mono.
  17. How are Daiwa spinning reels durability wise? I know their casting reels have a great rep (I have one and its great). But how are their mid-range spinning reels? Do they hold up as well as Shimano? Any general reviews about Daiwa spinning reels? I'd pretty much like any general info about them, particularly the Advantage.
  18. What is your favorite aspect about bass fishing? For me it's definitely trying to figure the bass out.
  19. Ha. I just typed up a detailed report of my summer, thinking this was about MAryland. I'm an idiot.
  20. I really like Ultimate Match and the Bass Pros as far as bass fishing shows, but Flats Class is by far the most informative show on TV. Much info learned even carries over into freshwater.
  21. Costa Blackfin glasses. Blue Mirror 580 glass lenses, tortoise frame. After fishing in Florida, i have been blown away.
  22. I like Ardent or Daiwa casting reels. Abus feel nice too, but I don't have one. Don't really like Shimanos for a few minor reasons, but I think pretty much anything the big three offer in the $150+ range will be good.
