Cool Story for Dog Lovers and Servicemen
Hero to be reunited with soldier he saved Dog gets his day By CYNTHIA R. FAGEN They became instant war heroes by foiling a suicide bomber trying to sneak into US soldiers' quarters in Afghanistan, and as a reward, they're getting homes -- and lots of doggie treats. Three stray mutts -- Rufus, Target and Sasha -- were living near Sgt. Chris Duke and other US troops on a remote military base in Afghanistan on Feb. 22 when they spotted the bomber outside a building where 50 soldiers were sleeping. Rufus bit the Taliban terrorist on the leg as Target and Sasha barked furiously. Several soldiers -- unaware of the imminent danger -- tried shouting down the mutts. But the dogs continued barking, spooking the bomber into prematurely setting off 24 pounds of C4 explosives before he could get through the door -- and killing himself. Rufus and Target were seriously wounded. Tragically, Sasha died. "There isn't a doubt in my mind [that the dogs] saved my life," said Duke, who was wounded by shrapnel -- and is now adopting Rufus. Five soldiers, including Duke, were evacuated for medical treatment after the blast. But Duke, a National Guardsman, eventually returned to the base near the Pakistan border and nursed Rufus back to health. It was the least he could do, he said. When Duke was homesick, Rufus picked up his spirits. And when Duke stood watch, Rufus hunkered down beside him. But Duke said he never thought he would see his canine pal again after finally returning stateside in March. That's when several nonprofit groups got involved. "The dogs and the soldiers bonded in such a way that it would be a travesty to leave [the dogs] behind to fend for themselves in a war-torn area and the soldiers never knowing what happened to them," said Robert Misseri, of Robert's Cause, a nonprofit animal-advocacy group. "It's our mission to help these soldiers." Another good Samaritan, Anna Canaan, 23, whose fianc é, Christopher Chiasson, is a soldier currently stationed at the same Afghan outpost in the Dand aw Patan district, created the Puppy Mission Rescue Facebook page to help the dogs. Today, Rufus arrives in Manhattan before flying to Augusta, Ga., where he will spend the rest of his years with Duke and his wife, who is pregnant. Target, being flown out at the same time, will live in Phoenix with the Army medic who saved her life. Pics of the soldiers and dogs on the link. Determining Prices?
That's what I was afraid regarding brand because they are all name brand equipment, and I do just want to get rid of it. However, I'm not going to be there, so there won't be any negotiating with the buyer. Thanks for the help.

Determining Prices?
My parents are having a yard sale in a couple of weeks and I decided I am going to through in some rods and reels that I don't use too often to make a quick buck. Everything is fairly new (nothing older than 10 yrs.), and in very good condition. What are some good prices for used equipment in general? I was thinking 1/5 to 1/10 of the original value. Is this fair for both parties?

First evening tourney!
What lake are you fishing? If it's in SW Ohio maybe I can help you out.

Spinning Rods?
I'm looking for a good spinning rod that will cost no more than $100. It will be used for t-rigs, shaky heads, senkos, etc. with an occasional jerkbait. I need to buy new because it will be a gift, otherwise I'd be in the flea market. I've been looking at the CarbonLites and Vendettas. Has anyone had any experience with these or do you have any other suggestions? Thanks.

The "sprinkler head" drop shot retrieve works.
Using spinning gear while in a canoe and you still put that hawg in the boat. Very impressive! Congrats on a great catch and pics.

Carolina Rig or Texas Rig?
x2 and I will fish a C-rig when the bite is tough like middle of the day in the middle of the summer or early in the year when a cold front pushes through.

Shattered Old Personal Best!!!
You're right. She beat me in golf as well that week and has been asking me if I need any advice or tips in either sport.
-
Shattered Old Personal Best!!!
That's what I told her, but you know how women can be. She said if the fish would have eaten the shiner it would have weighed in at an even 10. Regardless, it was a memorable day and I look forward to a fantastic season on our home waters.

First Time Out In the Boat - Hawg of the Year
Great pics and fish! Is your avatar from the movie "Gummo"? If so, that is one @#$%ed up movie.

Shattered Old Personal Best!!!
My girlfriend and I visited some family in Florida last week and went fishing on Lake Toho with a guide service. We caught around 15 fish in the 4-6 lb. range (6 hour trip) using shiners and a mixed bag of soft plastics, but primarily 7 inch junebug ochos. Around mid-day and after not having a bite in a couple of hours, my girlfriend hooked this whopper on a shiner which weighed in at 9 lbs. 12 oz., tripling her personal best! Being the seasoned fisherwoman that she is, she rounded up and is now claiming that the fish was a full 10 lbs. I guess I can give her the 4 oz. I have never been so proud, yet envious.

Lure Combos?
Just curious, but does anyone have a set of lure combinations that they throw with two people in the boat? For example, when fishing with a partner, the first person in the boat throws a shallow diving crankbait and the second follows up with a jig. This has proven to be successful for me (especially pre-spawn) and I was wondering if anyone uses a similar method and what lure combinations do you use?

Biffle-O Tube type baits
I may give them a shot since it seems to be a very versatile bait. Did you see the "bass boat crash" video that was in the related videos section on your youtube link? Crazy #@$%!!!

Casting video
I'm assuming you are having troubles with a baitcaster so, go to youtube.com and type in "How to use a baitcast reel". Or, you could just google the same thing and find videos that way. There are also videos on there on how to fix backlashes as well. That's how I learned.

Catch & Release
I don't know the regulations in my state either, and I have always practiced catch and release with any species of fish. However, I have noticed over the past several years the population of bass in SW Ohio has increased. Either that or I'm getting better at catching them, but I prefer the former. I think since more and more people are looking at bass fishing as a sport, they are passing that mentality down to their children. Now their children are getting older and exercising catch and release for someone else to do the same. Also, with adults and schools stressing the importance of the environment more and more over the past decade or two, I have seen less litter along rivers and in lakes, thus possibly resulting in growing a healthy fish population.

What type worm?
If you had success using a worm last weekend with roughly the same conditions, I wouldn't switch anything up. Keep doing what you're doing. Since you asked what worm I would suggest, I like the Berkley Powerbait 5 inch shaky worms and the 7 inch original power worms in blue fleck and black w/ blue fleck when fishing deep. Good luck!

Tipping a Guide???
Thanks guys. I hope I do catch my personal best beating 6 lbs. 7 oz. I'm fishing the Kissimmee chain for 2 days during the week of March 22nd thru 26th. I'm assuming that may be a good time to be down there.

Tipping a Guide???
What is the proper amount to tip a bass fishing guide or any guide for that matter? Is it like a server in a restaurant at 15-20% and do you base it on his/her performance of putting you on fish, friendliness, personality, etc?

mother load! take that bait monkey!
Agreed, the wish list is awesome. Before every holiday, birthday, etc., I make a wish list then sound out the email to my family members and girlfriend. Since I've started doing that a few years ago, every Christmas I get some sort of new combo that I wanted or gift cards to buy it. I haven't had to pay for a rod or reel in years. It's more of a "hint-hint" dropper than anything.
