Need help with buying gas tank and hoses for motor
Is the motor really old? Is it red? If it has two hoses that go to the fuel tank that one will not work. You will need to find an old OMC tank made for your motor. Those old motors had a hose that pressurized the fuel tank with air that pushed the fuel to the motor. edit to add link: here is the tank for older motors http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/VINTAGE-JOHNSON-2-Line-GAS-TANK-PRESSURIZED-OMC-Boat_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ26455QQihZ011QQitemZ320109429400QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

Kipawa prop problem???
First, if your minn-kota is still under warranty do not tell them about the kipawa prop. They will void your warranty. Second, check for a bent shear pin. If it is bent it will cause the prop to wobble and make noise. Third, Check for fishing line or other stuff wrapped around the shaft. I actually noticed less noise and vibration with my kipawa than factory.

Bilge Pump Discharge
I had that problem with an old boat that. I looked and looked but could not find a check valve. What I ended up doing was making a loop in the hose that went up above the hole before it attached to the through hull fitting.

Boat Speeds?
If your motor at WOT is turning within the manufactures recommend RPM that is all the faster your boat will go. If it is turning higher than the manufactures recommend RPM you can increase the prop pitch to get more speed but hole shot will suffer.

New prop? hydrofoil?
That is a tough question. that sounds about right for a 25 HP. I have a 16' that I had a 25HP on and it would do 25MPH with just me with the right prop. With 3 people it would barley do 15MPH. If I changed to a smaller prop it would go faster. Please my standard answer to, what prop do I need?, here. http://home.comcast.net/~team_dougherty/fishingtips.html it is tip#4 I see this asked so often I wrote that and just refer people to it. If you have any questions let me know. Just an FYI I recently upgraded to a 40HP and it will go 32MPH now. Paul

Trolling motor????????
I have used my boat with a regular trolling motor in salt water with out an issue. The key is to hit it with fresh water as soon as you pull it out. I'll take my boat to the NJ Shore to go for flounder, crabs or what ever in the back bays. It is nice to use the bow mount to help control your drift. When I pull the boat out I go right to the nearest self serve car wash and put $5.00 in the machine and blast every nook and cranny with the wash wand. I even bring a hose and muffs to flush the engine. There is usually a hose bib somewhere at the car wash. Brackish water wont be as bad. I would still hit it with fresh water ASAP when you are done.

trolling motor battery and charger
I bought one of those boxes from boaters world last season. The circuit breakers, charge indicator and power ports are great. The best thing is it make it very easier to carry the battery. It is one of the best investment I have made for the boat. As far as battery size, I would get the biggest you want to carry. A 105 AH may be to big for a canoe. You may want a 75AH for that. For a battery charger I have one of these I leave on my 75AH battery to charge and keep it charged 24/7. http://www.battery-rechargeable-charger.com/vector-VEC080-float-charger.html I got it a walmart for $20

Portable Fish Finder
I had the older fishin' buddy II and the bracket was much better than the one that came with the 4200. After using the 4200 for a few times, I got it xmas 2006, I do not have any problem with it. I only use it when I get to where I want to fish and then I only use the electric motor to move the boat. The older or new one would not hold up under outboard power. I have read the reviews about battery life as well. I have found them to be untrue. The fishin' buddy II easily lasted a whole season with 2 sets of three "C" batteries. Even with a week long trip to Canada where it was on 8 hours a day for 6 days. The rest of the year it was on maybe 20 times for 4 hours each. I have used The new 4200 a few times since I got it a total of 8 hours and the batteries, 3 "D", still show full strength. This season will show more. You can easily get a 12v to 4.5v adapter at radio shack to power of a cigarette lighter. "D" batteries are cheap though.

Kipawa Trolling Motor Props
what are your tops speeds on both boats, just using the tm? thanks looks like i will be getting a 55, as i have a 14ft boat. which is right in between what you have. The 12' goes 5.25 MPH with the kipawa with 2 people and their stuff. Funny thing with the stock prop it would go that fast with one person with two it would only go 3.5 MPH. The kipawa gives me the 5.25 with one or two people. I guess it has more "bite" My 16' only goes 4 MPH the same it did with the stock prop. As I mentioned, The acceleration is much faster.

Kipawa Trolling Motor Props
I have a Kipawa that I use on my trolling motors. It is a 358 it fits on my transom and bow mount. My transom mount is a 52LB thrust. I measured about a 1.5 MPH increase when I use it on my 12' v bottom . The biggest difference is in "hole shot". I accelerates a lot faster than the stock prop and a lot less vibration. It is also more weedless. On my bow mount 47LB thrust on my 16' v bottom I did not measure an increase in speed. Again, The acceleration in much better as well as vibration and weed resistance.

connector types for 6 gauge TM wire
For connecting two wires of 6 or 8 AWG I use a split bolt connector and cover with electrical tape. No need for special tools, just two wrenches. Plus, they are easy to take apart if needed. To connect to a battery I use a screw set ring terminal. They can be purchased at lowes, home depot or Sears Hardware. Again, no special tool needed and can be removed if needed.

How fast should our merc. 50hp be?
That sounds about right. You could try a higher pitch prop or a stainless prop of the same pitch and get a couple of more MPH. The higher pitch prop will lengthen your hole shot and your motor might not have enough power to turn it to 5500 RPM. It worth a shot. FWIW I just got a 40HP on my 16 footer with a 17" prop and it will turn 5300 RPM and go 32 MPH. I order a 15" prop to see if I can get that extra 200 rpm.

Is going to 50HP worth it?
When I have looked at the prices on ebay, other websites and www.smalloutboards.com I got it for what I think is a steal at $950.00.

Is going to 50HP worth it?
Here is an update to an 11 month old post. Well I got a used 40HP tiller two weeks ago. It is a 1990 Evinrude. I got it out on Saturday for a test run. On the first try motor motor would not go over 2500 RPMs boat would not move. Made a phone call to Bob at Dave's Sport Center, Where I bought it, for some Ideas. Tried a few things nothing. Put boat on trailer, off to Doylestown. Some trouble shooting later suspect a spark plug. It did not look "used". Changed plugs. went back to river. Start motor, open her up a couple of hiccups then right up, and I mean right up, to 5300 RPMs and 32 MPH with a 17" pitch prop. I ran if for 45 minutes shut down, start up, run slow, run fast, she seems to be a good buy. I will see if I can find a 15" prop to try. Goes to show you spark plugs can be bad right out of the box. I was never a fan of champions anyway. I switch those out to NGKs ASAP.
