We spent the majority of our time in Mexico. We didn't go past the old church, but we fished right up to it. From talking to Charlie, he's just tired of the whole commotion and no one I talked to believes Hartley's story 100%. I think you owe it to your loved ones to keep your head on a swivel down there, but don't let it ruin your time. Pay attention to your surroundings and you'll be fine!!

Sorry it took so long to get this posted. We just got back in to Tulsa late last night. Anyway here's the report. Friday we hit the water about 7:30 and headed straight for the Salado and fished rock at 25-30 ft. Things started fairly slowly with a few dinks and a couple 3-4 lbers before lunch. After lunch we headed south and finally got the bigger fish to bite. When they did decided to play, it came fast, with 8-10 fish over 5lbs in the matter of 20-30 minutes. Charlie had the big fish of the day at 8lb 2oz I believe, I had a 7lb 7oz and a 7lb 3oz and my fishing partner pulled in one at 7lb 6oz and one just under 7lbs. We had 5-6 fish each from 4-6 lbs. Tex rigged Senkos and Flukes in watermelon red and a PB&J jig were most effective. We got to the ramp about 4pm and immediately heard the news that Tommy Law had broken the lake record with a 15.63. Absolutely incredible fish and the lake will benefit greatly from the exposure. Congrats to him!! Satuday was cooler and FOGGY. We got a bit later start due to the fog and our day just never really recovered. The bite was slow all day long. Nothing over 4-1/2 all day and only a few of them. We again fished 20-30 ft, but decided to try to the shallow bite as well, but the big girls just weren't willing to play. All in all, while we missed the REALLY big fish, we had a ton of fun and a great trip overall. Charlie is a great guide and you'll be laughing all day with some of the stories he tells. He'll make no secret of the fact that he prefers fishing deep and if I had to guess you'll spend most of your time in 15-25 ft of water. You don't need anything lighter than a MH rod and 25lb fluorocarbon and/or 50lb braid. Leave the fairy wand and finesse stuff at home and get ready for some HARD fighting fish!! I'll be anxious to hear your report. Here's a picture of me and my college buddy Ryan from Friday (that's my ugly mug on the right) with our four biggest fish of the day.

Are you comparing the Chronarch 100D to the Core 50 or the Core 100MGFV? Frankly the 100MGFV is a tank and every bit as stout as my Chronarch...

I could never seem to get the Alberto knot to cinch down right, so I went back to the J-knot.

Typically I tip guides 15%. If I feel like they really busted their tail trying to put me on fish, they get 20-25%. The best advice I can give you is to tip based on how hard the guy worked to make your trip enjoyable, NOT how many/how big fish you caught.

Mike, If I could only have one pair of Costa's, I'd go with green mirror. It's on an amber based lens and tends to be just slightly darker than the plain amber. If I get to have two pairs, I'd go with an amber set for low light, sightfishing, etc and silver mirror for those bright bluebird days. I believe the green mirror is a copper based lens, as is the silver mirror. Copper lenses are the best all around lens in my opinion. They can handle bright sunny days and still allow for great clearity when site fishing. Actually, I think we're both right although it depends on the type of lenses you chose. 580's=copper, 400's=amber. My green mirrors are on 580 lenses and to my eye the copper base is a touch darker than the amber.

I've heard good things about the Cabela's XML rods. IMO, unless you just feel like being different, it's tough to beat Sufix Performance braid.

Is that being reported by any news organization? Link? I have seen conjecture on other forums about the couple being investigated by authorities, but have yet to see anything to that effect reported by the media.

Personally, I like a little more give in the system than an XF rod provides. I pitch exclusively with braid and since there is no stretch with braid, you need a little more moderate action, IMO. Of course, if your not planning on using braid, an XF should be fine.

I use a Zipper Monkey Bug or a Brush Hog depending on my mood.

Except that they don't mention that the Xpeditor service can only be used ONCE per rod now, which IMO is a far bigger issue than the extra $50...
