  1. I was fishing on a small farm pond.
  2. I was just wondering if anyone had a general idea of when the bass might be spawning in east central iowa? The reason I ask is that I caught my first bass yesterday, several infact. They were pretty aggressive which surprised me, biting on cranks and spinnerbaits right up on the bank. So if anyone knows if it is pre, spawning time, or after... or if you have a way of telling when they do spawn let me know.
  3. I had a feeling the reviews I was reading (BPS, Cabelas, Amazon, etc...) weren't the right ones. It sounds like most of the reels around $100 should be pretty good, so I am going to narrow it down by what features I am looking for in terms of line capacity and weight. Then I will go see how they feel in the store. Thank you everyone for your help.
  4. I am looking for a new spinning reel in the $100ish. I have read up on shimano, daiwa, pflueger, and okuma. When I examined similar reels from different companies I found that they all got 4 to 5 stars. What I don't understand is that there are always several reviews that say the reels are junk, and then most people say that it is the by far the best reel in the price range. It doesn't really matter which brand, all the reviews seem the same. It makes it hard to decide which will be the best buy.
  5. I have been looking at the following reels: Shimano SaharaFD, Shimano SymetreFJ, Plueger President, Pflueger Supreme, or Daiwa ExcelerHA. Thoughts?
  6. I get the idea. It was a nice reel at the time, actually it is the Sedona not Sienna. While I am sure the CI4 is a great reel, it is a bit out of my price range. I just bought a citica that I love. Is there anything in that $100 range that would be good?
  7. I just started using a new custom spinning rod, made with a batson rx7 blank, and now I can feel vibrations coming from the reel. I know this is a good thing, but it is driving me crazy. The odd thing is that when I spin the reel on it's own off the rod it feels good. On the rod, not bad, just a little vibration. However when I am actually fishing with it I feel all sorts of stuff coming from the reel. It is a shimano sienna(?) 2000FA, ten years ago it was a $60 reel. It has never been professionally serviced, just my own external cleaning and a few drops of oil here and there. I suppose it is time to take it in. Anyone else ever experience anything like this when upgrading rods?
  8. This happened to me once and I think it was because I was using my fingers to keep tension on the line right in front of the reel. I took the line off and re-spooled it while keeping tension past the first guide. Seemed to work.
  9. I ordered some tubes and when I got them I realized half of it is silver and the other half white. I was going to rig it on a jig and haven't decided how to rig it. Should I make each sied a different color, or make it top/bottom? What would you do?
  10. My wife was venting about my spending to the wife of one of my mentors and she replied regarding her husband, "It keeps him happy and out of the house, so I don't mind."
  11. Please fill me in, what is a TD frame?
  12. X2 on the Citica. I got to use mine for the first time yesterday and it is sweet!!!! I picked mine up from www.americanbassoutlet.com for $99, with only $4 for shipping.
  13. I don't have a boat but was thinking about getting one, just a little jon boat. With the gas prices the way they are I doubt it will happen this year. Maybe I could find a used kayak or canoe.
  14. This pond was dug out a few years ago which created a channel around the outside that is at least 10' deep. Should work as long as I try before the sludge gets thick.
  15. That's funny! I have been able to squeeze in some things by selling some stuff from my other hobby, music. I don't necessarily try to hide stuff, but I do pay for as much as I can in cash. No paper trail. It also helps to justify it in her terms: focus on how much I saved by buying it on sale.
  16. Think of it this way, might help. To Jeeps, both geared 4:11, one has 35" tires, one has 29" tires. Bigger tires will turn much lower RPMs. Now transfer this to spool size vs. tires That is just like the difference in my Curado 300 (6.2:1 28"IPT) and my citica 200 (6.3:1 27"IPT). Let me see if I understand what you are saying and how it applies. So my curado has a bigger spool, which spins slower and therefore requires a faster gear ratio. Am I close?
  17. I have been doing some research on reels, comparing ratios and IPT's. I am amazed at how two reels with the same ratio made by different companies have such different IPT. I wouldn't exclude a reel soley based on ratio.
  18. I just aquired a Rapala DT10 that looks like a baby bass from a friend. I was snooping in his box and picked it up and said "Hey this looks cool, this would be great in the pond!" He handed it to me and said "I have never caught a thing on it." I fish a small pond that is full of bass and bluegills and I am determined to catch someting on it. What do you guys think?
  19. It was in a sale bin for $1.99 so I thought I would give it a try. There are a lot of pike, and rocks with lure grabbing tendencies, in a river I fish a lot so I use less expensive lures there.
  20. I love it when my wife and kids come fishing with me.
  21. I was fishing today with a cheap jerkbait I got at BPS last year and the bill broke off. Now all it does is float, is it still worth using as a topwater or should i make myself a new keychain?
  22. Can anyone tell me more about how gear ratio/LPT relates to high resistance baits such as a large colorado bladed spinner bait? Which would be better, a 6.x:1 or 7.x:1?
  23. Has anyone had a chance to try the citrix yet? What are your thoughts on it?
  24. I was told to use warm dish soap and a rag. It worked like a charm, even on some of my oldest rods.
  25. What is the advantage of using the 15# braid if you have a leader that is so light?
