  1. I have two and I love both of them. It was fun to work with the builder to decide what colors and components to use. It was well worth the wait and the money. I never would have spent that much on one from a store, but kowing they were made just for me justified it.
  2. 15 lb braid is still as thin as a hair, doesn 't matter you have a 10 lb test nylon leader, you will continue to experience main line breakeage if you keep on fishing with 15 lb braided, for me even in the less rocky lake I fish won 't fish with less than 30 lb braid, it may be 30 lb breaking strength but it 's 8 ish lb test diameter and I treat it like I treat 8 lbs test. You know that is an interesting thought... I started using braid on a smaller reel so I could have a stronger line at a smaller size. I am learning that there is a lot of trial and error in all of this.
  3. I tried using a leader today, 10lb Trilene XT, with my 15lb PP. On my first cast I got snagged and it broke on the main line of PP. I think I am going to use the 10lb XT on the river now. Or I might use a lighter jig that won't go down so fast.
  4. So what should be the difference in strength between the leader and the main line so that the leader breaks first?
  5. X2 At least 6-8 feet. I use an albright knot with a dab of superglue. So what happens when you get snagged? Does the leader itself break, or does it completely come off of the main line?
  6. How long of a leader would you use?
  7. No leader, didn't figure I needed one given that the river is pretty dirty. Should I use one?
  8. Hey everyone, I need some advice. This is the first year I have used braid. While fishing in the river along rip rap banks I have been getting hung up quite a bit. I am using 20# PP on spinning gear, and am able to free most of my jigs. The ones that break off appear to break at the knot. So far no big deal until today. I got stuck good, and i tried breaking off but lost a good deal of line doing so. It is to where i can see the backing. My question is am I wasting my time and money by using braid in this situation?
  9. I am bound to the bank, so I am used to working an area as thouroughly as I can. Last fall I went out on a boat with a friend and we basically trolled along the bank around the lake. I found it very frustrating because I was lucky to get off three casts to a good spot. I was overjoyed when he got tangled in someone else's broken off line and I got to fish for a while.
  10. I have question that is related, why would anyone buy a rod with the tip broken off? Like the ones they sell at the bargain cave at Cabela's.
  11. How do you go about flipping the line? I tried it once, just pulled off onto the floor. Not a good idea.
  12. Last year a friend cleaned out his boat and gave me a bunch of stuff. There were a few lures that seemed old, but in good condition. I stuck them up on the wall 'cause they just looked cool.
  13. This is me, fishing from the bank. If I have my truck I usually take three or four rods. If I have my car I usually take one, especially if I have to walk to fish or will be on a rocky bank. Even when I am a guest on a boat I only take four rods. Thank you everyone for posting.
  14. I am overwhelmed by the extent that people specify their combos for certain techniques. I only have a few rods, and each one is used for a wide variety of techniques. Actually choose which rod by the weight and resistence of the lure I am using. Here is what I have: 1 ultralight spinning, 1 light spinning, 1 med. spinning, 1 med light BC, 1 med BC, and 1 med hvy BC. For me, this covers everything from panfish to northerns and everything I can catch in between. I was just wondering if there was anyone else out there like me.
  15. Is anyone concerned with the availablity of parts for the store brand reels? I have heard a few of the reel repair places in my area don't like working on Cabela's or BPS reels. I suppose the big names discontinue stuff as well. Just a thought...
  16. Thanks, I will give it a try.
  17. I haven't used them much, any suggestions as to how? Would you cast upstream or downstream? Slow or fast retrieve? Paralell to shore or out in the middle?
  18. I have heard two different opinions. 1. The recommendations on the rod have more to do with how the rod handles the diameter of the line. Breaking shouldn't be a worry, assuming you are sensible with how you use the rod. 2. The other is that you don't want to get too far above what the rod says, or you will break it. I have some braid on my rods that does go over, but by no more than 10lbs. I also am very careful, and don't keep my drag tightened all the way down. I would rather loose a fish or lure than break my rod.

You really have to watch them on the price difference between online and in store. I got burned once on a reel, saw it $30 less in their catalogue. Now every time I go there I make sure I look up the price online first and make sure they match it instore.
  20. That's it? I thought there might be some sort of performance difference, or some specific technique that would need a bigger reel.
  21. What is the advantage/purpose of buying a larger size reel such as the curado 300 vs. the curado 200?

I was just at Cabela's today and was horrified by some of the stuff they were selling at the bargain cave. Several reels were broken, missing parts, or simply just beat to hell. Yet the price was discounted only slightly. Shoes that looked like they had been worn for a month, still covered in mud. I did find a pair of braid scissors for $1.
  23. The ice is almost gone and i am more than ready to start fishing, but I am not sure which lures to start with. I will be fishing a river from the bank and hope to catch anything I can: walleye, northern, or smallmouth.
  24. This is exactly the information I am looking for. I have to wonder though, what role does the diameter play in how the line handles? 8lb XT is almost the same as 12lb XL, when filling a spinning reel for general all around use which would you choose?
  25. Does anyone still beleive the old wive's tales about which way the wind blows?
