  1. I switched my shakyhead rod to 10lb/2lb diameter PP super slick this year and love it so far. I use a short leader of 10lb Sunline fluoro.
  2. I've got an early 1900's Pfluegar with the old silk line still on it. Took it out one day with the old steel rod that it's on and tried fishing a plastic worm. You have to pull line off and basically throw the bait at your target. I had a couple bite but couldn't ever get a good enough hookset or keep up with the fish. Really makes you glad we have the gear we have now.
  3. I have confidence in them, that's why I fish them. As for catching more fish? I don't think they scare away any fish so they aren't hurting anything.
  4. 2/0 Gamakatsu Wide Gap Finesse hook. If I need a weedless hook I go with the VMC weedless wacky hook.
  5. Only 1 lake in Kansas that they stock them in year round, and they for sure take advantage of them
  6. That things at least 15 years old, I wouldn't go over 50 if it was still in the box.
  7. 10lbs 2ozs on a Zoom Magnum Lizard in watermelon seed I've hit the 5lb mark 3 times for smallmouth, once on a chartreuse shad 97mr slender pointer, once on a watermelon gold flake trick worm on a pro slider head, and once on a BDS Zero Lucky Craft crankbait in American Shad.
  8. I think this would really have to be broken down to different types of plastics. For the sake of arguments, I'll go with a bait I've been fishing a lot lately. What is your favorite plastic? (who makes it, price, where you bought, color?) Zoom Baby Brush Hog, varies I paid $2.79 at Academy, Black Sapphire and Plum Apple Under what circumstances will you throw any type of plastic? Anywhere I think the fish are at right now How do you determine what color and type of plastic you will throw? Also, what determines if it gets some sort of weighting? I always fish them with some kind of weight. Color varies by water clarity mainly. Darker colors in stained water, natural colors in clear water. What hook do you recommend for certain plastics?(who makes it, size) 4/0 EWG worm hook I like Owners or VMC. I've been fishing them on a swinging football head that I make myself. Are there any plastics that you've tried that you do NOT suggest? Netbait Dirt Dawg, still no idea what to do with those goofy things. Are there any lure specific plastics that get a certain rod? A little confused on what the question is here? What techniques do you use for your selected plastic? Any tips here would be great for readers! I mainly drag them along the bottom or fish them with small hops.
  9. I have extra of everything hanging on my pegboards at home. While it would suck big time, I have back ups that would prevent me from having to go buy all new stuff
  10. I've got a few different walking baits with barely any paint left on them that keep catching fish. I don't think color makes nearly as much of a difference as cadence does with that type of bait. If it's bothering you, I'd contact the company about it and see if they'll make it right.
  11. I enjoy learning new things, part of what keeps it exciting for me.
  12. I would have cranked it quickly a few times and killed it again, sounds like the movement caught it's attention in the first place then it lost interest when the bait stopped moving. A fluke or a senko would have been a good follow up bait in that situation.
  13. I'll help you out with that. http://kdwpt.state.ks.us/KDWPT-Info/Locations/Wildlife-Areas/Region-5/Mined-Land/Cabins
  14. They all have 2 beds but say they sleep up to 4. I have an air mattress I can sleep on if I needed to.
  15. I've caught fish on the Wal Mart spinnerbaits, and they work just fine in some situations. No way I'd take one to Table Rock or Bull Shoals or one of our local lakes with clear water where fish get a good look at them though. If they work for you, lucky you.
  16. Or those teeth grow in a little straighter, wow!
  17. Whew! He crushed that one! Congrats to both of you.
  18. If we want to do Perry and if anyone is interested in the cabins we'll have to get a move on with reserving them, the weekends before and after the 11th and 12th are already taken! They're $55 a night and say they sleep up to 4 people? Looked really nice when we drove by them Thursday and they're within sight of the state park ramp.
  19. I've lost the insert in a couple St. Croix rods myself, always my fault when it happened though. I just replace them myself, pretty easy to do.
  20. You are fishing two of the toughest lakes in the KC area for starters. Both get pounded every day and there's lots of people that keep everything they catch regardless of if it's a keeper or not. The south side of Shawnee Mission along with the dam are going to be your best bets. The trick worms you bought are going to be a good option out there. Fish them along the edges of the weeds where there are weeds, around any cover, and along the rocks on the dam. As for Wyandotte, there isn't a much tougher lake around here and this time of year it's as tough as it gets, especially if you're bank fishing. Here's 26 pages of info you can read through about the lake, but that probably still won't help much. http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/topic/41651-re-wyandotte-county-lake/
  21. Used to fish them a lot and caught tons of everything on them. I pinched a medium sized split shot about a foot in front of the bait and reeled them very slowly.
  22. I use them during the winter for wipers and largemouth. The place I fish them you have to skip the bait a long ways to get to the fish and I trash a lot of baits without ever catching a fish on them, makes them a perfect option.
  23. What is your favorite crankbait? (who makes it, price, where you bought, color?) Academy H20, $4, Academy, depends a lot on the situation but sexy citrus shad has been good lately. Under what circumstances will you throw any type of crankbait? Pretty much anytime the water is stained and above 45 degrees. How do you determine what color crankbait to use? What factors tie in for you? Time of year, forage available, water color, weather conditions. How do you set the hook when you know you've got a fish on? Side sweeping hookset. Are there any crankbaits that you've tried that you do NOT suggest? Rapala Rattlin Raps, never caught a thing on them. What techniques do you use for your selected crank? Straight retrieve making sure it's running into things, stop and go, ripping through weeds. Name a good squarebill and in what situations to throw it! See original answers.
  24. Academy H20 baits are what I use a majority of the time anymore. With a lot of our lakes having zebra mussels now, it hurts a lot less to lose a $4 bait than a Lucky Craft, plus they're good baits that catch fish
