Fish Kill At My Local Pond?
WDE, where are you? Can you add your location to your avatar? I agree with the lack of oxygen or a high dose of fertilizer entered the ponds. Your state game and inland fisheries should be notified and hopefully they can give you some insight. Let us know what you find out.

Surfacing bass in clear water
Have you considered throwing a wacky rigged 5 or 6-inch Senko? You can drag it on top of the grass and pads, moving it so it floats and acts like a butterfly. Let it sit on top of a pad as your retrieve it back to you. You also wrote you threw plastics. Were they unweighted and you moved them like a snake in the water? The frog suggestion is excellent, too. What about a toad? Ever throw a toad? Experiment. The fun of bass fishing.

Fishing Charlottesville
Rob, I have personally never fished in the greater Albemarle County area but as you know, the VG&IF booklet, 2017 Freshwater Fishing in Virginia, gives a list of places to fish in central Virginia. Send Wayne P. a personal message as he lives in that area of the Commonwealth. Wayne P. has not been on the Forum since June and I hope he is OK. Give him a shoutout while you wait for others to give you their input. Congrats on your daughter getting into UVA. Just remind her that it is easier to get into college then it is to get out of college!!!

An odd occurrence last night
I fish a private pond in Dinwiddie County and one day I was walking to my next spot when I saw a nice one sunning itself along the bank. I quietly flipped a Senko about five feet from her. She heard it enter the water; spun around; saw it; and swam to it pretty fast and ate it. She was a nice three pounder. I know I could see here and she probably saw me, too. But she was so content to just sit against the bank in the sun she ignored me, totally. Add me to your list of these situations.

Long time lurker and a question
F3, welcome. Glad you decided to join us. How about adding your physical location to your avatar so we can give you better input. As for the life jacket, do you think your state's department of fish and wildlife can give you any input? Try giving them a phone call and ask one of their specialists about your query. Another suggestion is to ask a water ski shop owner for their input. Not a clerk but someone who has the knowledge and experience with kids water skiing. The last suggestion is to find your local power squadron and ask them for the individual who knows about life jackets and give that person a call. Good luck and have fun on the water.

Yes, There are Bull Sharks in rivers
Looch, the bull shark in the story is in Louisiana, and the river is easy to access from the Gulf of Mexico. No idea about the others but it is very interesting reading.

Missing fish / Bad hookset
Mvaan, excellent query...difficult answer. As you can note by the replies above, there are a lot of variables involved in attracting, hooking and landing a bass. Way too many for any one person to contemplate as they change with each cast, time of day, time of year, the weather, water clarity, baits, type of hooks, what know to use, line test, reel speed, type of line, rod strength, rod tip speed, using a leader, applying scent or not, how you set the hook, baits you are using, the baits' color patterns, and if the bass are eating or you have just aggravated them into killing your bait. The fun of bass fishing is to take all of the various variables and set up your presentations to fool the bass into hitting your baits and then properly setting the hook. Easier said then done. So for me to tell you what setups you need; what baits should work; how to set the hook; and address any other variables would be foolish as I don't know what you have confidence or your experience in bass fishing. Today, fishing this morning, I missed a bass on a buzzbait but threw it back and a four pounder hit it. She was beautiful. Then, had a bass miss my frog about 10 minutes later. No other bites. Only those three. No aggressive strikes. It was after 10 AM so they had already eaten. I think the hits were in aggravation of the baits in their territories, only. Read what the guys have offered; check out the YouTube videos from Glenn May; read magazine articles and books on bass fishing; and go out and clobber them next time. And remember: experiment, experiment and experiment. Tight lines!

Settle a bet for me
Manually flip the spinning reel's bail by hand. Otherwise you are asking for trouble as penned above.
