Sounds like you need to step up the rod and the line my man. My multi purpose rod is a 7' MH F spinning rod with a 2500 sized reel. Spin it with 20 or 30 pound braid and you shouldnt have too many problems. NGaHB

I bought a nice bag that could hold 4 3600 planos a good while back, after screwing around with it all for a few months I went to my backpack ive had since 9th grade and never looked back. All that weight on one shoulder as opposed to two is just plain uncomfortable. NGaHB

For shakey heads and top water I would go for a mh or m power rod with a fast tip. The fast action and braid might be a slight irritation with buzz baits, but a good leader or a good hesitation will make up for that. A moderatly priced rod will suit your purposes well enough so you can get a feel for em. Never dealt with any abu garcia's, but I would make sure to get a decent reel in what ever brand tickles your fancy, as starting out with a cheap one has a high likelihood of turning you off to em real quick.

Take a sharpie, pick your poison color wise, and color a few feet at the end to make that part closer to your original moss green. NGaHB

I agree with SoFlBassAddict, Id really suggest getting a cardiff and an okuma and giving it a go. I've caught a hand full of double digit bass (including my PB) and a slew of smaller ones on my okuma and cardiff 301 with no problems. I have handled nicer rods, I have handled smoother reels, but this combo flat out works and will let you get into the big bait game with pretty minimal cash. I really like my 7'6" H okuma for hudds, tho some people prefer the XH. I find the 401s to be cumbersome compared to the 301, and I don't have a problem with line capacity using 25# CXX. I wouldn't mind getting a calcutta, but they don't come in a 300 size, and I much rather a 300 over a 400. You really dont have to spend THAT much to get into swimbaiting, and you will end up wanting more than one rod, just like all other fishing, so having a decent entry rig will come in handy no matter what. I loose lures way too often Im afraid. I fish 99% from the bank and have been loosing lures relatively often, at $20 a pop, its a painful process. But like folks say, if your not getting hung up your not fishin in the right areas. NGaHB

I remember he suggested getting a cane pole and a bucked of worms and crickets to get back in the groove of proper hook setting, still one of my favorite things to get out and do for a relaxing evenin. RIP Uncle Homer NGaHB

willingness to help each other! If you have two guys both trying to out do the fish, as opposed to two guys trying to out do each other, you will be way ahead of the game. Me and my fishin buddy are both working to break down the lake, and figure out the fish, if hes getting bit with a tactic, you best believe im going to switch to that. Some competition is natural and fun, but you have to work together NGaHB

Use what youve got till you can figgure out what you really want or need. Id suggest runnin up to bass pro and getting bass pro brand in whatever price range your lookin for. NGaHB
