KS MAY TOURNEY/FUNDRAISER!
I just got off the phone with the council. THEY ARE INTERESTED. They would like me to write a proposal which I will do. They will require a minimum of $1,000.00 to be made that day for THE BOY SCOUTS and more would really turn their heads. SO: Here is my thoughts: It sounds like we have about 6 interested. I can rally a couple additional. This tournament is for bragging rights and to benefit the BOY SCOUTS (and in exchange we will get to fish a wonderful lake). ~THIS IS NOT LIMITED TO KS RESIDENTS ~ The lake is between Sedan, KS and Moline, KS. 2 miles E. of Hwy 99 ~THERE IS CHEAP LODGING IN SEDAN KS (I will get the hotel's address if we have some out of towners) ~There are several other great lakes in the area to make a weekend out of it. Sedan old city lake, Sedan new city lake, Big Hill, Polk Daniels to name a few. ~I will gurantee them $1,000.00 minium. If we don't make it, I will pay the rest . So lets get some people! ~It will be tax deductable. ~ not sure of the exact size but it is well over 400 acres and the clearist lake I have fished. It has smalls and Blacks to name a few. ~ Trophy will be provided! My proposal's synopsis: ~ one day only: Two dates I can do this: May 31 or June 21 ~Guranteed a minimum of $1,000.00 to be raised for the BSA Quivira chapter ~No live well fish - paper only - "on your honor" ~Each boat is $200.00 ($100.00 per angler) since we are not weighing fish - each boat will need two people (team so to speak) ~no polygraph will be given ~lunch will be provided by yours truly ~this lake is no wake - you may idle with big engines then use TM when you get to location you wish to fish or use your TM all the time. ~I will see if they will donate a membership/lease for 2008 to be auctioned with a minum bid at the end of the day for all that would be interested. ~You don't have to a member of BR to participate - this is for the Boy Scouts but it would be nice if we can get enough together without having to 'out-source' that said if you have a buddy to team with go for it! I am sure there will be a little more to it but I am at work and need to get back to it THE LAKE: I have fished here a couple times. ~ Large watershed built in the late 50's I think ~ very clear with any structure you can think of. Large cliff walls, flats, coves, grass, some standing timber- I think it hits 50' deep in parts. ~ 30 to 40 fish day is expected ~ DOW has shocked DD bass out it in the past ~ All in all one of the finest lakes in Kansas in my opinion. I am giving up one of my sweeties here! ~ you will not regret participating in this fun fish. I don't have a map per say: Here are a couple Google images I saved for your consideration. If you are interested: Post up and let me know which date would work best for you. With some additional input and after I propose the council and get their feedback we will have to lock it down. I will start a count with screen names: POT COMMITTED: Hydrilla + 1 = $200.00 possibles: Flatfish? Ring Fry? Thomas Wells? W4SVC Rays777 Lets pull this off! I would love to meet some of you and fish this great lake again! Happy Releasing, H.G. PS- mods - I tried to resize the pics but everytime I do my explorer shuts down?? Sorry!

Shadowing a guide
I was fly fishing guide for trout in Glenwood Springs/Aspen CO area for 12 years. By the time I left I part owned 3 shops in the valley and ran about 17 full time guides and another 10 part timers. The first five years were a lot of fun, by the time I sold my business I was crusty and not enjoying it all anymore! About ruined fly fishing for trout for me. I love to go now, but I took about a 3 year hiatus from even picking up a rod or row a dory! Moral of my story: it is possible to loose what you love if you are not careful. Obviously not the same for everyone and not to say I didn't enjoy many many great days and friendships made on that dory. But that area had many guides and shops and it was very competive. Thankfully I was friends with most of the guides and the old school took a long time to accept any newcomer - had to earn the respect so to say. By the time I sold my portion out/ I could have been selling women's hats - would have been the same in a lot of regards! It was a job that started early and ended late - often tracking down guys at bars who wouldn't answer their phones so I could capture the 3 boat trip the next day etc. BUT - each person is different and I don't want to discourge you. Guiding can be rewarding and at the time I was single/no kids; so the lifestyle was great! Wouldn't trade it for the world! IMO - the first 5 years are the absolute toughest! More than likely you will have to buy your own boat, tackle, rods etc. until you have a track record and clients. Seems after the first five years - if you are doing it right- you should be booked up during the prime months and be able to pick and choose your clients instead of taking everybody that has a buck. The ones you don't want to fish again, I would say I was booked - and refer to an aspiring guide and keep a referal$. After a year to three if you are doing a good job -you may be able to get a small discount on some main items like engines/boats/tackle but typically they are not free or even close. The above poster is correct if you get out the calculator and make up a couple years of expenses - there are a lot and include everything - housing, advertising, refferal pays, INSURANCE, tackle, GAS, maintenence, etc. - don't cheat yourself be honest and make the worst case. Then be honest with yourself and figure out how many days you can get in year one and two again- WORST CASE. This will open your eyes and if you are honest with your numbers you will see the road and if you want to travel it or not. IMO it can be rewarding but I don't think anyone is getting rich doing it. They do it because they love it and in a lot of ways it is better than some options. I hope I don't come off as a know-it-all or anything. Guiding Fly fisherman while rowing dory boats is a little different than being a Bass guide, but IMO not by much. Happy Releasing, H.G.

Stunted Bass
Deal with it all the time. I fish a lot of private watersheds from 10 to 200 acres in Kansas. These are private/semiprivate lakes built by the army core of engineers to help prevent flooding downstream. They are constructed on private property and often on span multiple landowners i.e. properties. A lot of these don't ever get fished maybe 0 to 10 times per year. Most do not have boat ramps or the like. The good news is we can have 100 fish days/bad news is most are dinks, with the ocassional good fish. Unless these are managed they will stunt. Some property owners have out the state biologist or independent companies who will shock it and get a good head count and lay out a conservation plan. Usually like remove X amount of bass per acre under X size, X amount of bluegill, add X amont per acre of this forage fish etc. The good news is sometimes I get the ok to fish these places and help remove the fish and keep records or call in the harvest. I have participated in some of these and have seen the lake come full circle..it's not overnight and the real good guys implement additional measures, adding crawfish, adding the correct forage fish, continue to remove the correct amount. I am not a biologist or claim to be. Here is a BR article that can shed some additional light on the subject and I think if you google it you will find a lot more info out there. http://www.bassresource.com/fish_biology/raising_trophy_bass.html Hope this helps some! Happy Releasing, H.G.
