  1. Anyone still following this ?
  2. Are we measuring with an open mouth or close mouth ?
  3. How deep have you aight bass ? What is the deepest and on what. The deepest I have caught bass was 44 ft on a blade bait on the day after thanksgiving.
  4. Yes it is legal to fish at night. Before you come it may be a good idea to pick up a regulations book or look them up online. Maine has a pretty good website. www.mefishwildlife.com
  5. My favorite two baits for fishing at night are a buzzbait and a spinnerbait. They let you cover a lot of water pretty fast and they also attract the bigger bite. I usually fish around thick weeds and laydowns. They have both produced for me for years. It is pretty fun to see them strike the buzzbait. Try it youll like it .
  6. I grew up Largemouth fishing in Maine. I have spent a lot of time on Unity Pond which is not far from where you will be. I have never fished the lake that you will be staying at. Unity Pond though is a really good lake. There are huge largemouth in there biggest I've caught was a 7-4. You can get a nice map of the lake at the local store. If you want to stick to the lake you'll be staying on I would recommend finding the deepest thickest weeds and fishing them with a senko or a floating weedless topwater frog. The first drop off in to deeper water over 12 feet or so would be another good spot to try. If possible try fishing at night with a buzzbait or spinnerbait. Have fun good luck !
  7. I would consider 85 and over hot weather. As far as hot water, a surface temp of 75 to 80 plus. When I think of deep water I think of 20-45 feet of water.
  8. What is your go to presentation when the spawn is over the water is hot and the bass are deep ?
  9. The floating bridge is good in the spring. Not so much in the summer when it becomes super weed choked. It is pretty shallow too. There is plenty of better spots on the main lake for summer fishing. I would fish the milfoil. Jigs, senkos, drop shot. I fished there about a week or so ago. We caught fish in relative shallow water on the main lake, less then 10 ft. We also caught some in over 25 feet.
  10. It appears that the fish has a Fungal infection most likely Saprolegnia. I see it all the time, it is pretty common. It appears as a white to brown growth coming off the fish. Usually Saprolegnia will take hold in an area of the fish where flesh has been explosed. It is common in warm, high nutrient water or in high fish density waters. No cause for concern. Not every fish can be healty. Just a sick dieing unfortunate bass.
  11. I would much rather catch a few larger bass then a whole lot of smaller bass. If I had the choice between 3 five pounders or 20 bass under three pounders I personally would have to choose the 3 five pounders. I try and target big bass. I have caught so many bass under 5 lbs. I want to catch the 5 plus pounders and if i have to sacrifice a few bites to do it then so be it.
  12. I would start keeping the smaller bass. It sounds like there are so many bass in your pond tha the population is stunted. Best way to solve that problem is by removing some fish. Have a community fish fry.
  13. My club has tournaments on lake champlain and so does a lot of other clubs. Usually to win you need to average atleast 4.25 lbs per fish it be in contention. That is what the pros average when they come to visit each year. We have had club tournaments where 24 lbs has won it for five fish and several other people were close. There also are quite a few opens on champlain every year and yet again it takes an average of 4.25 per fish to be in contention. Against the pros in a one day tourney i think that there would be a lot of locals in contention for sure. The multilpe day format would be much tougher on the local guys. I still think that they would contend though. The pros def would have the upper hand on electronics, boats, and gear. I follow the pro tourneys on champlain every year. Some of the pros dont even get a limit or they get a 8 lb limit. In a sluggfest of the best pros against the best locals with the same gear, electronics and boats I think that the locals would surprise a lot of the pros. I think they should try it on champlain. What a fun tourney that would be. I am sure it would get a lot of coverage.
  14. In the northern edge of there range largemouth grow slow. I have personally reviewed thousand of data points for the new england region. The data was collected from area colleges as well as from biologists. In the first year they grow to around 4-6 inches and then they put on another 4 inches there second year. By then end of there third year they average around 12-14 inches. This is the age that they start actively spawning in the north. After the first three years they average 2 inches per year until they reach 20-22 inches in length. The very few northern bass that have reached that length still grow but more in girth then in length. The oldest fish sampled was estimated at 23 years old. All the data was collected from the new england area and doesnt reflect growth rates for other areas of the country.
  15. Where is your tourney ?
  16. I have had great luck with a chatterbait and spinnerbait. Lately I have been having exceptionally good luck with a buzzbait. Hearing and seeing them blow up on it is pretty fun even in the dark. With the Buzz bait I can fish over super dense thick weeds that I couldnt fish with the cahhterbait or the spinnerbait.
  17. Welcom aboard ! Glad to see another Maine bass fisherman onboard.
  18. Those smallies are ginormous. I have no chance at beating those huge smallies. They just don't grow that large out here that often. Lake Erie is an amazing lunker smallmouth producer. I wish I lived closer. I'm going to try and contend with largemouth.
  19. Here is my first entry, hopefully not my last : 6 lb 8 oz Largemouth Sat April 20th Kezar Lake, ME 6lb 8oz = 104 oz State Record for ME is 11 lb 10 oz for a total of 186 oz 104/186 = 55.91 Hopefully I will be able to upgrade soon
  20. Glad to see there is atleast a couple of guys who like to fish for bass in the great state of Maine Landed a 6-8 Largemouth last weekend Hopefully I will be able to get a bigger one soon
  21. Fishing on Champlain can be pretty good that time of year. Dillenback and Missisqoui bay are pretty good spots. They tend too school up that time of year. If you find a school you can catch an insane amount of fish. One hundred bass days are possible. Tabor point is another spot that you could try. Stick to Champlain you won't be dissapointed.
  22. Any Maine guys want to start a lunker bass bragging rights contest for 2013 ? 1. Must be caught in Maine 2. Picture with the fish 3. Picture of the bass on a digital scale. 4. Artificial lures only 5. Smallmouth and Largemouth Winner gets bragging rights for the year. Anyone want in ? Any suggestions ?
  23. Guys have been fishing Laphmans bay and at Bensons too. I was up at the islands late last week and there open water on both sides of the sandbar. There was a guy in the north side of the sandbar, there is more openwater on that side. The conn river is open and has been producing some bass as well. A meet and greet sounds like a great idea.
