Clear Water, Thick Grass Baits
Have you tried the mepps timber doodle? Its a good weedless lure and the action is nice. Hookset not so much, unless they really take it.

Nice picture and impressive looking fish.

Got Skunked
Been pretty difficult here too. I did manage 1 bass at 14inches earlier today. At the pond yesterday there were a quite a few people fishing with no luck and some were even using bait. Like someone mentioned I think most are still on the beds.

My New Best Pickerel
Thanks! It was very exciting to see a calm quiet water explode when you least expect it. Christain- Appreciate the advice and will keep that in mind for next time. He swam off strong and hopefully not too much slime was removed. Paul- Completely agree. There are a couple bodies of water that has a very pretty greenish blue tint. Hard to explain. Also enjoy fishing city ponds, a small peice of nature where peoiple can take a walk, bbq, or just sit by the bank and read.

My New Best Pickerel
Decided to try a new park pond to change thing up a bit. I had 1 hit on a timber doodle ( awesome on lily pads) and lost my split double tail grub. Switched to a spinnerbait and then a jig with a swimbait on it. used that for about an hour. then pulled out a booyah top secret buzz bait in white rigged with white curly tail grub. First cast on a steady retreive with a quick one inbetween and saw a big pickerel jump out and smash it. Pulled out drag and swam into the pads an got stuck. A nice tug and another fight and brought him in. Fantastic and very unexpected as I bought it recently. To be honest I did'nt like how it swam but now am hooked. It was 22 1/2 inches more or less. He darted off as Soon as he touched water.

Absolute Worst Day.
Wow, now thats terrible luck for your friend. I was pretty upset, but got over it pretty quick. If that happened to me I would be furious at myslef. As for my rod combo I lost, yes it still sucks as I have 2 rods to work with now;on the otherhand, I need to upgrade my gear, as I'm becoming more serious about bass fishing.

Quest For The 7 Pound Smallmouth (Part Ii)
Congratulations on that 7pounder! I am always impressed by the appearance of a large bass. Would love to catch one of those and share it. Good luck on your quest for the 50' muskie and report back when you get one... :^)

Thanks and sorry had to vent. I did check on it today and couldn't see it and really did not feel like getting in the water again. At least it wasn't expensive.

Favorite Squarebill Thats Least Likely To Snag?
I really like how the bandits look with the fat profile. Definitely gotta try one out and pretty sure I seen it at Dicks. Thanks for the tip, will do that for sure. Anything to hold on to my lures longer ha. As for the Lucy craft, they sure look nice but gonna hold off on that until I get around to finally getting a lure retriever. I don't know why it's taking me so long to get one, probably thinking of the money I can spend on lures, lol. I looked it up and it sounds like exactly what I need. The price is good too. So far I only used squarebills in one area I fish and the bank and bottom is pretty much all rocks. Would you say its pretty durable and how about the tuning? Thanks I see mouth or lip marks near the head area so pretty sure its trying to eat it. I'm thinking I probably burning the lure too fast for a good hookup and or reeling down too slow after pumping my rod up. Next time I'm just going to gradually reel the fish in as it tires, instead of doing the pumping and reeling down part. Interesting, I always thought it was the front hook that snags up. Since bass strike head first the rear hook is unecessary for the most part.

Absolute Worst Day.
Went to the dam to try and catch my first smallmouth and started out throwing a kvd 2.5 squarebill and after maybe 20 minutes I had a really nice fish on. It was pulling drag out and that hardly ever happens to me. I don't know what it was, since it came off. Have no idea wether a large smallie can pull drag like that. Made a few more casts hoping for another bite but then got snagged up real nice and broke off. After that I lost 2 gary yamamoto swimbaits then switched to a yo-zuri crystal minnow and caught a small herring in the eye. About my fourth cast my lure grabbed my ulgy stik ultra light from behind me and tossed it into the water to my surprise. I was going to use that for shad and lost the small lure with that too. It did'nt seem like it fell that far so i took everything out of my pockets and rolled up my pants and walked in. I turned around after the water reached past my hips. I grabbed my stuff and ran to my car and drove home. I'm gonna come by tommorrw when the tide is low and try and get my rod back hopefully.

Favorite Squarebill Thats Least Likely To Snag?
I really like the Strike King KVD 2.5 in red sexy shad color and bumping it on rocky bottom by the dam. I get some hard strikes on it ( though never was able to bring a fish in) and for the most part it does a nice job deflecting and moving around rocks. Unfortunately, I lost my last one today. So is there another brand that anyone has noticed that snags up even less and thats about the same size or bigger( dont want anything smaller) than the kvd 2.5? I also like the large/fat profile it has. Also, the lip on it tends to wear down pretty quick, so a more durable lip is nice to have too. Last question, whats your favorite color for that particular crank in reddish/brown water color? Is it normal to lose a lot of fish on a squarebill crank? Thank you all and if anyone thinks I should just stick with the kvd by all means let me know.

What Is Going On Here?

Catching Other Fish While Bass Fishing
Bluegill, yellow perch, crappie, pickerel. Those are the only 4 species I caught fishing for bass. I just need a carp.

The Absolute Best Bait Ever
I tried wacky rig as well as texas and carolina. I even tried it under a bobber once. Got absolutely no hits and eventually lost all my baits or got worn down from being thrown. I am going to give it another go now that I have polarized sunglasses. Maybe then I can see whats really going on.

Horny Toads, What Works For A Better Hook Ratio?
I have the same exact issue too, and its really in their mouths, but it flys out when I set the hook. Honestly can't remember what hook I'm using, but thinking that eighther the hook needs a wider gap or needs to be larger. For me, I was hoping that when the fish strikes the bait the point would push out. Not the case, however, going to try something with a wider gap and hope it remains somewhat weedless/snagless.

Huge Bass In A Pond.
Appreciate all the suggestions. I am going to hold off on the live bluegill until I really start getting frustrated, though I'm pretty tempted. Also, going to hit up Dicks later today with some coupons I recieved and get some of those jigs and soft plastics, etc. My tackle box is pretty empty anyways. Sam, no shopping carts or dead bodies here lol, but was told that the place gets pretty shady in the evenings and to watch out. I don't know, but rather not risk it, dont want to be that guy. Thanks again and will post pictures if I ever get her.

Huge Bass In A Pond.
I been going to this pond lately and there are lots of bluegills an small bass with a handful of decent sized ones. It takes about 10 minutes to walk around or maybe even less than that. I always caught little ones but today I was shocked when I saw the biggest bass I have ever seen swim away from the bank. It was huge and I dont want to estimate, since I'm terrible at it, but the size was so impressive I gotta say it was at least 4-5lbs. I guess my question is how bigof a bait would you go in a small pond? The biggest I have is a 5inch jerkbai, but sometimes I feel its a little too much for the area. At the same time I been using smaller lures and been catching small fish. I been fishing this place pretty hard on light tackle and never thought something that big was in there. Any other suggestions are appreciated too.

The Absolute Best Bait Ever
I couldn't remember so I looked it up on amazon. Its called Bass Wisdom by Homer Circle. Chapter 29: Bass fisherman: North vs South. I go to barnes n noble for a couple hrs to read fishing related stuff once a week so I tend to forget, but Im pretty sure this is it. This is just the authors personal experience so I know its not a fact.Just Got me thinking is all.

The Absolute Best Bait Ever
the crystal 3d minnow is my best one even in shallow clear water. I know its recommended to use a more natural look in clear waters but this thing works. I'm pretty sure the bass had a good look at it too before striking as I was doing a 4sec stop n go. Theres a lot of people saying senkos, but for some reason it never worked for me. Then recently read a book about how the southern bass readily eat senkos but their northern family normally will not. Just thought that was pretty interesting and may explain why senkos don't seem to work well for me.
