Man, I thought the winner was post #14. My wife's father refuses to buy a spinning reel from this century. He uses a couple of old Shimanos from maybe the late 80s? Cheapies to begin with. At any rate the bail likes to close prematurely on the cast. I've taken a crankbait right smack in the forehead. He even hooked his Australian Shepherd in the belly. Poor dog. What a fiasco that was. Glx and Imx rods, but he says a reel is a reel as long as the drag works.

These are my choices thus far. I prefer the bloop effect over the spitting effect.

Phenix makes nice blanks. Probably my favorite across the board. I doubt you'd be disappointed.

A couple suggestions that will put you in that faster moderate fast zone. Not quite as slow and fast as a true cranking blank. Rainshadow Immortal popping blanks are fantastic. You would want the 4 power for what you're doing. Phenix Recon C714MH, or M1 MX72MH. Both of these are a slower fast and make great treble hook rods. If you don't want the typical slow parabolic crankbait blank I'd stay away from the likes of Croix moderate, RX7 crankbait, and Mhx crankbait blend. Just my 2 cents. Good luck

That blank should be great for bfs. Get an SV spool for that Type R and you can cast anything you want. I don't like my SS for lighter stuff. My Alphas SV takes the cake for that.

The basic series Volkey has regular size K guides rather than the mid micro size on your bfs rod. Just thought I'd throw that out there. I'm waiting to see/here more about the newly introduced Speedstyle series. You should check them out. They look fantastic.

Both are better than most stock bearings so it's an upgrade imo. A flushed stock bearing is going to work better than out of the box of course. As alreaalready mentioned, better start up and easier casts is what to expect from after market bearings. I wouldn't expect greatly improved casting distance, but it can be noticeable if paying attention. The majority of my gear is between 3/16 and 5/8. I've found I like the Air and ZR bearings best simply because they are a little less noisy. None the less I also use 7's and find them both to be money well spent.

Depends on how big the spool is. If it's a 1000/1500 size spool don't even bother imo. 7 or 8 pound Sunline Sniper would be my choice. Invivx has to much stretch for my tastes, and Sniper will handle well enough as long as you pay attention while using it. I've heard Tatsu is great, but too much money for something I'm bound to blow up at some point.

I'm sure Cabelas pays Daiwa a pretty penny. From my experience, Cabelas Daiwa branded reels are every bit as good as the original Daiwa model. Daiwa isnisn't goito go through a bunch of trouble to water them down. I'm talking about low end to mid tier reels. The only difference will be cosmetic, a bearing here or there, and I doubt the bearings Daiwa is using differ any.

Ya know, I've always wondered this as well. If any Japanese anglers are using top tier Nfc or Croix sticks. I wonder what the custom rod market looks like over there. I know they like the softer, less powerful, lighter lines stuff. If they are as curious as we are, maybe so. If they read TT they're either laughing at us or drooling with us. At any rate the two rod lines I'd be paying closest attention to at that price point is the Megabass XX and the Kistler Helium 3. Either way, you get good versatility and a lot of rod for the money.

Where have you been hiding? How do you like that reel?

Most reels that put out higher than normal drag ratings shutter at top ends anyways. I've got to get around to upgrading the drag washers on my SS SV. Some reels will leave you wanting more. Good thing it's an inexpensive upgrade.

There are quite a few more reels than just the 3 listed on TW. I'll likely just wind up purchasing a new Daiwa Steez SV! Too much of a Daiwa fan boy to stray!! I haven't decided which rid yet either, but it will be custom no doubt.

Can someone do a breakdown list of Jdm Revos including intended uses and what each reel excels at? I did a quick once over of the reels on Jpangler and Japan lure shop, but with all the different models / spools sharing the same frame I found it even more confusing than the Tatula ordeal. Can anyone also refer to the different braking systems used? Are there only two? Is one better than the other? I think I may be in the market for a new reel to use for throwing 4 inch paddle tails on 1/4 to 3/8 oz swimbait jig heads. Any suggestions from the Jdm Revo line up? Thanks

Good times for sure. I love catching maniac smallmouth on light gear. Apply the same general idea when fishing for Coho / Silvers for any of you saltwater guys and you'll be grinning from ear to ear when you hook up. The majority of my smallmouth arsenal consists of medium and medium light gear. I wouldn't have it any other way!

Same material, different mandrels, different actions. I would put them on par with SC3 blanks, above the Crucial, definitely not on par with any high end Megabass.

In that price range I feel the two best options in terms of feel, taper, and sensitivity are the Rainshadow Eternity and Phenix Ultra Mbx spinning blanks. If you prefer a little slower taper the Phenix blanks are golden. The Phenix blanks run a little light in power so look at a medium light. They will still handle 1/8 Oz quite nicely. The Rainshadow blanks are a little truer to power ratings. What type of cover / structure will you be fishing if any?
