Steering Cable Maintenance?
Hey guys. My ranger 487 has cable steering. It'sa 1994 model. I took it to the shop today to have the cables replaced. The shop owner said that I probably won't have to do this again for several years, but that he wasn't surprised that we need to do it due to the age of the boat. Anyway, is there any way that I can do regular maintenance on the cables to help them last as long as possible? thanks guys!

How Did You Select Your Nickname on This Site?
Hi! Great thread! When I worked in a processing plant, we had a shift manager that was the type of bos that everyone likes.. He was always friendly, free with advice, and a great all 'round guy. He gave us all nicknames. He named me "Bubbalicios" and could even page me that way over the radio. It stuck for a while. When the internet came into being, I once tried to use "bubbalicious" for an email, but it was taken so I had to figure something else out. Since my name is "Joe", I tried "Jolicious", and it worked - Matter of fact, I haven't seen it copied yet, so it's easy to keep track of stuff ;D Now then, for the Garfield Pic - when I used to drive dirt track race cars, I weighed about 400 pounds, and was lovingly known as "Fat Cat" - Even had the garfield painted on my trunk and all... Sine then, I lost down to 250 pounds or so, but don't have the nerve to go by "Chubby Kitty" just yet ;D

Too Slow?
Ranger 196 VS 200hp Johnson Venom. with me (260 pounds), my buddy (300 pounds), and all the normal fishing stuff, I'm topping out around 5,100 rpm and 47 mph (according to the gps). Is this normal, or am I missing something? I have no idea about the prop, other than it's silver and has 4 blades...

Swim Bladder in Fish caught in 30' of Water?
My buddy was telling me that he has been told to "stick" a fish's swim bladder when he catches fish in 30' or deeper water to relieve pressure. 1.) is he sending me on a "Snipe Hunt" ;D 2.) Where do you stick them, and with what? Thanks guys.

RW- for us rookies out here, could you go into a little detail about the difference between a well defined cove and a bay please? thank you.

Thermocline and Your Flasher?
Sounds like a movie title or something ;D I have been told that I can use my "flasher" to find thermoclines. I normally use the flasher on my Lowrance 480LMS, but since I have finally gotten the GPS portion of the unit to work, I started using the old fashioned flasher. A buddy mentioned that I could keep the Map pulled up on my Lowrance, and use the flasher to find thermoclines. Can anyone tell me (in a VERY basic way) how to do this? I am having some trouble figuring out how the flasher works and how much to adjust it. thanks, as always, for your help!

One transducer - Two Screens?
Dougherty: does this mean that I'll have to buy a whole new set up for the front of my boat, or is there just a disply screen out there that is a cheaper alternative onceI get the switch box? Sorry for the newbie question :-[

One transducer - Two Screens?
I'll check that out. Thanks!

For the record, JB is alvie and well, for now ;D I'd like to treat Earthworm77 to a fishinf trip down here in Arkansas. And, until then, JB and I are going to figure out a couple local tournaments to try our partnership skills!

One transducer - Two Screens?
Hope this is the right place to ask an equipment quesiton. Anyway, I have the Lowrance 480 Ms, or 480 MMS - whatever it's called. The transducer is mounted on the back of the boat, and the until sits next to my steering wheel (I use it for a flasher when running)... I would like to have something on the front of the boat so that my partner and I don't have to try and share the screen all the time. Do any of you know if there is a product or way that I could put a display screen up by the front? I don't need it to to anything other than show me what the unit is showing, so I hope there is a solution. thanks!

Is Oil from "Wal Mart" ok to use?
Here is a quote from the Penzoil.com website about the oil that I bought at Wal Mart: I copied and pasted this directly from the Penzoil.com website. I am in no means an expert of internet stuff, so if it's not good do this, please let me know. Anyway, I figure they won't mind becuase we are discussing their product, right? Pennzoil® Multi-Purpose 2-Cycle Premium Engine Oil is formulated to: Protect against piston scuffing and ring sticking Help keep spark plugs and exhaust port clean Recommended for pre-mix, injector systems and direct injection systems. Is Oil from "Wal Mart" ok to use?
Paul, Thanks for your reply. As a (hopefully) service to the other members, I would like to let everyone know that I just got off the phone with a johnson Rep (Ben). He said that as long as the oil I was using had the "TCW -3" lon the label, that it would be ok to use. He also mentioned that sometimes the after market oils don't have all the smae conditioners in their versions of oil, so he reccomended using their "Carbon Guard" every other tank of fuel or so. Not sure if I really need it or if he's just a good salesman ;D But, after hearing from Paul and tlaking to Johnson, I am going to give the Penzoil a shot! If any of you want/need to call Johnson, I thought I would include the phone number for reference : 847-689-7090 Tigh lines! Joe

Is Oil from "Wal Mart" ok to use?
Motor oil for my Johnson 200 Venom (1999 model) is something like $22/gallon. I notice at Wal Mart tonight they have Penzoil outboard oil for $28.5 for 2.5 gallons. Is this oil ok to put in my oil rezerve tank? I have the auto-inject thing... Thanks guys!

Matches "Made In Heaven", but helped by BR.com :o)
Has anyone met a fishing buddy while discussing tips, lures, etc? I saw a reply to a post I made the other day and the fella was local. So, we sent a couple of PM's back and forth.. Well, heck, now he, my son, and I are hitting the lake together this weekend! We've already gone through about 60 emails over the past couple of days planning our first trip! It got me to thinking about if anyone else has met new fishing buddies and gotten to fish with different folks on here?

Lower Unit Question
Thank you Mr Ben! I have printed this off so that I'll have it in my folder ;D

Lower Unit Question
Sorry guys, but I have another "Dang, Newbie - You should already know this!" kind of question How often should I check/change the lower unit oil? We probably average, oh, I'd say 3 hours per week with the motor actualy running, and most of the time (probably 2 1/2 hours of this) is spent idling at a local no-wake lake. Sorry for another silly question, but it's my first boat, and I would like to get into good habits right from the start.... Thanks.
