  1. weclome to the forum! Live on lake ray hubbard in garland for a couple years... talk about an awesome fishery!
  2. Looking to get into a boat for next year.. figured I should start window shoping now.. Can anyone suggest a decent site , or place located in Va with good deals on used boats....?? PoorBoy
  3. Feeling your bait, what its always doing is key. You should always be able to feel when the baits about to come over somethin... in the way the line moves , stops comming towards you an stays in one spot till the bait comes over the object. Ive found that at first impression most times when a bait feels stuck, I have to resist the temptation of yanking up on it . I can generaly let a bit of slack out an sorta yo yo it up an over the object to let it fall back down the other side, an thats where most of my strikes accure.. on the fall... after a bit of commotion I've cause by yoyoing over the cover... as several have said.. if your not fishing in the mix so to speak your missing out on some good fishing... and yes ofcourse.. get yourself a good retreaval system... they can be had for around 18.00 at BPS!
  4. Money being tight like it always is, I generaly have to buy within my budget (75.00 or less). Two years ago... I started using the BPS crankin stick... awesome pole an has stood up well to two years of crankin...I fish 3-4 times a week around my home area an never leave home with out that pole.. extremely sensitive and a nice back bone... it absorbs the fight well when them biggins are tuggin.... I now own 4 of the BPS rods in various lengths and so far I've only broke one (Completely my fault), and of course BPS allows you to return your pole within the first year for exchange (doesnt cost a thing for that it just is!). Can ya tell I love BPS? lololol
  5. Well if I had my choice I would keep a few choice guns laying around, but my best friend is a convicted felon (None viotent mind you), and cant be around fire arms of any kind. Our kids love him to death as he's often over at our house. So I rely on my Pittbull. Awesome family dog, an very protective of our kids. Honestly though I dont think I could picture her biting anyone because of how friendly she is, but then again... in the middle of the night.. strange person in the house.. she might rip them a new (_._) ! I live out in the country... an often leave my doors unlocked, so I reckin if someone wanted to come they could.... they would have to deal with ma dog Im sure, then me with a lewisville slugger, an then ma better half an her widow maker! lololol
  6. Ive been throwing mine on a gama 2/0 weedless wacky, and Im getting ready to try the Trokar wacky hook "for the sharpness" Now this is going to sound crazy but I throw mine on 10pound Berkley Trilene BigGame. On a 6ft BPS tourney specail IM8 spinning rod(medium action/Fast tip), paired with a Qautum Qvex20 Believe it or not with that set up right there, my hook up ratio is about 90% of the fish that hit it. with about 1% being gut hooked. There is no hook set to speak of, its more of a sweeping motion for me, and you have to pay close attention, feeling the line with your fingers to detect bites other wise your not feeling it, but rather seeing your line take off. I use the side sweeping motion for my hook sets, and its seems to work well. I dont lose many fish in the way of breaking me off, with the pole Im using, an keeping the drag set light , no reason for me to break off unless its a toothie critter! I know people that throw a normal strike king C hook with no weed guard an have good hook up ratios as well. Its all about what you feel comforable with throwing.
  7. One more spot close to the "GraveYard" Spot I was talking about. if turn around from that main lake point an look straight accross the lake to the opposite side, there's a creek, just inside the creek you can see the power line crossing it. Theres a cut on the left side of that creek and the power line boarders that cut. The bank with the power line on it is deeper then the rest of the cut, an that point right there swings out in an arch back towards the main lake, an the channel swings in right next to the outside edge, another good spot this time of year. Have had luck with a C-Rigged PumpkinSeed chart/tail. Also throwing a perch pattern crank running 8-10ft . I couldnt tell you the name brand of the crank, because it was a custom made bait that Kelly Pratt (Chickahominy Local Pro) gave to me one day while were standing at the rt5 launch ramp. (Fished a few tournaments with him on the chick back in the day, super nice down to earth guy)
  8. Im throwing mine on a 7ft Vendetta spinning Rod with a Qauntum Qvex20 spooled with Nano braid with a 15inch floura leader. I use the palamar not to connect the two together. Im currently using the BPS pro model dragon head.
  9. Im a member of Little Creek Bassin Club. Its a small club compared to most, I believe theres something like 45 members. We average about 25 boats per tournament. This weekend comming up we're having an open tournament at Little Creek Res, in Toana Va. The lake is an electric motor only lake, and is a good size place, so if your comming bring plenty of battery! Tournament starts at 6am an goes till 3pm. Cost is 40.00 per boat and 10.00 per person if you opt in for big fish. 100% payout, paying 1 place for every 5 boats. I know its short notice, but theres still time.. I believe theres a couple boaters without co anglers. I would have to talk to the club prez asap to get anyone interested paired up in time. So if interested, mail me on here, or via gmail at G3Error@gmail.com. Ill check them both often. I would put a link to our website, but I dont believe its been updated yet . Mods - If this isnt in the right thread, would plz move it to the proper one Ty, or if not acceptable plz remove this as Im new to the site an honestly dont know any better.. Any ?'s shoot me a line..... Tight lines all! PoorBoy
  10. I faced a simalar situation last year fishing for a new club and all. They were well orginized , an on point in most aspects of the club... an very tight nit.. TO TIGHT nit for my own comfort. Its started out with a meeting with club prez n vice prez an a local applebees, it was almost as if they were pre screening me to see if I was good enough to meet the rest of the club, that should have been my first warning, as well as I didnt feel comfortable with the line of ?ing they were giving me. My love for bass fishing, an the thought of fishing off the back of a nice big boat on a big lake over rules my instaincs of not joining. I fished the first tourny on kerr lake without a hitch.. caught a limit of fish an placed 5th in the tournament, and all was well. they to did drawings at the club meeting for the riders an such an I was pared with the club pres for the second tournament on lake gaston. About an hour into the tournament, I realized that he was being very hush hush, wasnt talking hardly at all... had no idea what was going on with him, come to find out, my previous partner said I was a good fisherman and was more of a problem then anything on the back of his boat, which was very suprising to me , considering we shook hands after the tournament ended, an he even made mention of taking me out again sometime. Now Im not one to complain... but it all sounded a bit childesh to me, and I recieved the same kinda treatment over the course of the next year with all except one person ( now a close friend an no longer fishes for them either). I chose to finish out the year because come hell or high water, I try NOT to leave anything in my life un finished, an it was a personl satisfaction to me to complete the year despite the oppositions I recieved through out... I just personal didnt want to give them the satisfaction of getting the better of me... I finished 7th for the year... out of 36 poeple, not bad considering. this all seems like a bit of rambling from me but my point is this... You are your own person, If you choose to carry on an complete the year.. good on you.. let them see your who you are for a reason.. be polite.. and roll with the punches till the end... if you choose to leave now.. thats ok to as you have to do whats best for you, and anyone on here would tell you the same., no one should think less of you either way you choose.... I chose my path for different reasons... as you will have to choose yours ... In the end.. if you can look in the mirror an say to self... Im doing well... then your are DOING well! Tight lines all! PoorBoy
  11. Welcome to the forum!

  14. 10 years now I've been fishing off the back of others boats... and its wasnt always easy... an even now its still hard... only now.. I have the experience under my belt and i feel as though I can compete on any body of water.. front or back of the boat. The key I learned was this ... everyone fishes differently, and we all at some point have to adapt to the given situation in order to catch fish. Lots of good advice in this thread for you to take with you on your next trip... the best of it I beleive is.. "talking to your boater" prior too, days before the tounry. Ive found that a bit of friendly conversation will go a long way with them, listen to what they have planned, an put your two cents in after wards.. most of the boaters I've fished with.. will listen to what you have to say.. and will most times be willing to fish new waters of your choice provided their waters arent producing. You will run accross those that have no time to listen, an will fish only what they want to fish an thats that.. To me thats your worst case type deal right there, but even then, you can take something positive away from it, even if its only how to NOT treat your co angler when you get your boat. The game of bass fishing isnt easy by no means, an one must be very versitile in their arsinal of weapons. When you come against conditions like that you have to move with the flow an fish like there's no tomm. Im not afraid of tying on something the boater is using.. if its working... teach me somethin new Regards, Mark
  15. Thanks for the welcome Keith. If your fishing Kerr... Do you know where your launching? I have some decent spots towards the upper part of the lake. if your launching out of NorthBend state park.. then your golden.. you can launch an be fishing in 5 mins where as most run to the mid lake point an start there. If you look on the map of kerr lake... from the d**n, heading down lake, on the left side there's a huge cove, on the map its called "the graveyard". If your facing that cove.. there's the point on the left hand side. about 20 yards from that point , into the cove.. there's a stump field that runs from about 15 feet off shore all the way out to the channel that comes off the main lake into the cove. thats about 300 yards of stumps on that lil section. Good fishing... C-rig a lizard or trickworm, Crank bait that runs between 6 to 10ft, chartrues/blackback, or Blue/Blackback. Had luck on a summer craw jignpig. I fished the FLW 6man team some years back off the back of a boat of a total stranger. We fished that spot I mentioned for both days of the two day tourny. First day I didnt fair so well... only 3 fish that went 8 pounds, he ofcourse killed them on a speed trap, 5 fish 17pounds. second day.. he let me run the front of the boat... an I had the best day of fishing ever to date. I had a limit on the second day.. with 3 of the fish going 5+ pounds each, 1 fish 4.3, and 1 fish 3.8. I missed finishing in the money by a small amount.. an had I caught 1 more fish the first day.. would have placed. Heres my inside take on that spot right there. You've got two main lake points on the left side close together... and the key to those two points was this.. we fished for two hours to start the second day on those two points... the boat traffic was thick that morning.. an the lake was its normal clearness, until those boats kept zooming by us... its a tall clay bank between the two points, and all those wake waves were crashing up on the clay an pulling down a bit into the water... cause a clay slick so to speak that enxended out well past the first drop .... the fish started pulling up to that point an abushing anything comming outa the slick into the clearer water on the drop. it eventualy worked its way around to the secondary point with the stup field on it... was awesome fishing once it got around to the stumps... we moved back n forth all day long between the two main lake points an the stump field on the secondary point just inside the cove and caught a ton of fish, best day on Kerr lake I've ever had. there's also straight accross from NorthBend, on the carolina side.. "SattelWite point Marina" (spelling!!!!) if you go up in that creek... there's another public launch ramp... just past that is a secondary creek on the right... in that creek is deeper water from start to finish in the back... I've done well this time of year back in there, throwing a hank parker classic, double willow leaf, chartrues. and a black/blue jig n pig. theres several bends on that creek... all of them filled with BuckBrush... an the first one you come to on the right... is awesome... the channel swings right to the tip of the bend.. an its a great transission spot for the active feeding bass. I could go on an on about that lake.. its one of my fav places to fish.. although the last couple years.. the qaulity of fish has dropped.. I would assume because of the "Large mouth bass desease" (spelling), last about 3 years or so.. then its starts to make the up swing back to normal... I would guess that its gettin back to the point where you can pull up on any spot an catch some decent fish...which makes that place one of the best fisherys in Va Hope that bit of info helps in some way.. an if you have any more ?'s feel free to ask away... an if I can answer I will... Tight lines all!!!! Mark
  16. Im actualy fishing the opens their throwing... there's one more to go on Sept 21, then they have the classic in which the top 20 for the year fish, an get a boat launch pass for the next year. Right now Im sitting in 18th place. hope to stay in the top 20 as I like the lake an plan on fishing it on a reg next year. So far all the tournaments have produced several fish over 4 pounds a couple over 5 an one over 6. This last tournament how ever... big fish didnt crack the 4 pound mark. Even the "locals" that fish it weekly said it was a super tough day on the water... and were suprised that as many people braught in a limit as they did. Its not that big of a lake if you ask me, not for the amount of boats that fish there. they have upwards of 60 boats at times fishing those tournaments, like fishing over top of one another almost. Def fishing used water, if you dont have a fast boat to roll around in..... these guys with there two torqeedo motors putting a 14 double wide job boat up on plain as they roll by me an my to man bassin buddy! lolololol
  17. Bethel Res has a couple nice roadbeds in it, both sides dropping off to about 14 feet.. with the chanel being around 18 feet when the water is up. there's also an old church foundation , if your facing the d**n... the last point on the left... about 20 yards off that point where the drop ends in deeper water is the base structure of the church. I know the Langley has been running the park since I was a kid, and I havent fished it in ten years probably, but I would guess that the public still has access to fish it... an well worth it if your in the area to stop in an give a whirl.
  18. oh and btw, I grew up in Hampton.. right around the corner from your fav place to fish I grew up fishing Bethel Manor Res. Im sure you know where thats at. Its the lake that got me hooked on bass fishing!
  19. Ty sir... feels kinda like home already.. SML is a nice deep clear lake.. with TONS of docks.... frustrating for me the first couple years.. because there's not much for clear water around where I fish... def a learning experience an now feel comfortable fishing in clear water or stained. practice practice practice! lolol
  20. Nice hawg! Its the right time of year I reckin.. time to get out the nighttime gear!!!!
  21. Nice video! Looks like you had a great day on the water! What we are striving for out there ...
  22. Im new as well.. But will say hello just the same!
  23. Hello all! My name is Mark. Born n raised in Va. Been fishing since I was knee high to a grasshoppa! Love all kinds of fishing, but if I have a choice, Im fishing for those bucket mouths! I consider the Chickahamony River in Williamsburg Va, to be my home body of water. Last 10 years or so, I've been fishing alot of Bass tourneys, as a none boater. Spending that much time on the back of others boats, you tend to pick up on alot of spots from them, So 2014 Im looking to purchase my own bass boat. Nothing to big, a 19 foot, with a 150 on the back will work just fine. Planning on fishing all I can fish tournament wise in the up comming year. If there's anyone out there planning on visiting Va, for bass fishing... Shoot me a line, chances are good I can head you in the right direction in the way of what to throw on what ever body of water your fishing around here. Places Ive fished : Chick River, James River, Pamunky river, Matapani River, Potomic (leesylvayna state park( DONT mind the spelling there!), Buggs Island, Lake Gaston, Lake Anna, SmithMountain Lake, and 100's of smaller local lakes between Richmond Va, and Virginia Beach Va. while Im no expert on bass fishing... I feel as though I can give good sound advice on any of those bodys of water mentioned above.. so feel free to ask!!!!! SO far Im liking this site... lots of positive info here for anyone looking for it.. and Im looking forward to contributing my part Thanks for takin the time to read this Respectfully, PoorBoy
