Old shallow crank bait. Metal lip, correct? I got one similar from my grandfather in the spring. Tossed it and caught a 2 pounder on the first or second cast. I took a picture for my grandpa, and promptly retired the lure so I wouldn't lose it.

Experience will help. As will fishing with someone catching fish using different techniques (you.) Happy wife, happy life....lol To that end, I: -Always lead her end of the boat into where I expect the fish -Never get upset when she snags/hangs-up - even on trees. Once she gets timid around cover or bottom, she'll never be as effective again -Try to never keep her on the water long past the time she's done (I want her to want to come back - not ever start disliking the time on the water.) -VERY gently suggest different techniques, presentations, etc -Never (anymore) laugh, ridicule or roll my eyes when she wants to try something I consider goofy. I can't tell you the number of times she caught bass with something I'd have been embarrassed to throw. -Most importantly, I drove her right on to a 3.5 her first time out four years ago. She's still hooked. -I stock her tackle box with the same stuff I have, or better. Early on, I may have tried to slip some of the cheap cranks, hooks, etc. No more. -I maintain her gear better than my own. Reels (AND line) lubed always. Last thing I want on the water is for her to have a problem with a reel or a spinning reel rat nest that KVD line lube might have prevented. -I was mistaken early on trying to do too much: taking fish off, rigging soft plastics, plug-knocking, etc. Teach her and let her do it herself whenever possible. We're both much happier that way.

I've had success with spinnerbaits and crankbaits cast past and then dragged 12 to 36 inches under the bait balls.

Best worm I've got. And, I've got a 12 pound worm binder of competitors. lol Cut-R and Structure Bug have done better for me combined this year than all other plastics combined. With those two and a few Menaces, the only other plastics I use lately are flukes and some finness-y stuff.

Link works now. Thanks. I do believe that a second hook in worms would probably increase my hook-up ratio. However, realistically, I'll never do it. Should be simple, but I'll file it away in my 'too much effort bag of tricks'. I have enough trouble threading one hook into a mag worm perfectly straight.

For me (Firefox), the link defaults to their main page with no obvious way to get to where you were at. Maybe a cut and paste is called for?

I only recall that once with Yo-Zuri, but it certainly has been a problem for me with P-Line. On spinning gear, Yo-Zuri has been awesome.....the awesomeness has been even awesomer since I began using KVD line lube stuff. Even Yo-Zuri has some memory issues.

When I find bass holding in grass that tops out at foot and half or two feet from the surface, I automatically try slow rolling shallow jerk baits inches below the surface....and I use floating, lipless cranks. Both can be worked fine with spinning gear. I've also recently tried mojo-rigged flukes through the top of the grass with some success -- also easy to do with spinning rod.

I'd always understood that New Moon was better than Full. Experience (mostly with other than LMB, however) proved that no moon phase could override effects of weather. I wouldn't be surprised if there is more difference in tidal waters, however.

Occoquan has had a peculiar hold over my psyche in the four years I've been fishing it. I did horribly there at first and still nearly get skunked on occasion. But, since the earliest days, I felt that this lake will give up big fish if I have the patience to learn it better every time out. I've never been on a body of water that is so challenging to learn, but so worth the effort. I've always fished it alone and until coming here (BR), I'd had little advice. I also fished the first year without a depth finder. Both are recipes for long, dry days. The fact that the cliffs can drop 35 feet in a couple of yards....and the flats can go on for a mile at times means that I still miss humps, holes and ledges ALL the time, even with a depth/fish finder. I still hit Hunting Run once in a while just to prove I can catch bass....even if the biggest might be two pounds ....lol. Occoquan kicks my rear once in a while and gets in my head still, but has also been extremely rewarding on days when I 'figure things out' for a few hours. Funny...as to jigs and topwater --- I don't think I've ever caught a bass there on a topwater - and very very few (accidental?) bass on bottom jigs. I am well aware that the old pros there use jigs VERY effectively. I toss topwater every time I'm out early and throw jigs a lot, but I've got some learnin to do. My best days have been using deep cranks, plastics (Rage Tail stuff, Senkos and flukes, mostly) and some square cranking and swim jigs --- had a great couple days hard jerking last fall

I'm envious!! We're still 10-12 years out, but have started looking for our lakefront retirement property. Net is cast pretty wide - Probably inside a triangle drawn between Memphis, Louisville and Virginia Beach. But, I'd love to get a stake in some land sooner than later. Congratulations!

Thanks, CN. I've become a big fan of Twist Locks in recent weeks. Even moreso since I learned I can buy the springs separate and make my own. But, actually, when trigging a Senko, I generally use Parasite Clips. They've done me pretty well this year.

I try not to criticize anything so personal as music taste....(or maybe I don't try so hard...but I should) But the mention of Vedder above has me reeling a little. I love the emotion and I'm a huge fan of early Pearl Jam work....but, well...this explains it better than I can:

I'd also consider that cast 21 actually IS done a little different than the first 20. When you've got your brakes set perfectly on the max for distance, it doesn't take a whole lot of extra wrist, early release or slight jerkiness to send the spool spinning out of control

Thanks for the tips. Please update when you also find the cure for making trig Senkos last forever. Wacky just hasn't gotten it done for me.

I've never fished a tournament, but I'm ultra competitive and the idea has always appealed to me greatly. But, I have to admit that after this and a number of other tournament-related threads on here, I've now got my doubts now that I want to do it. It just seems as though the competition would suck the fun out of it for me. I love sharing with other fishermen while out on the water and I don't want to ever think I have to 'claim' any portion of the water. Racing to a single spot, crowding another angler, and moving fish????? I am serious about fishing and fish seriously, but I enjoy nearly every single minute of it....this doesn't sound fun....sorry - I know it is silly to pass judgement since I've never even been in a tourny, but I'm a little uneasy
