  1. The gentleman above, Tom, is most likely correct. It's the brake actuator you are hearing, not the ball and receiver. Those balls are held fairly tight and you shouldn't be hearing much, if anything, coming from the ball and receiver. FL
  2. No hard feelings Was just speaking from personal experience with these smaller brethren. I agree 100% with your above statement, except for the 50. The added backing, 1/8" from top of spool, and smaller spool add up. And I love the 50s!
  3. With all due respect, you were the only one who said "100yds". I simply said, "spooled". I don't know how many yards exactly, there's backing to consider. And yes, people spool 100 sized reels. Why is that so hard to believe? 25 years ago we had bag phones, believe it or not. Tech gets better, so did reels. I don't cast too far, I keep everything stock for the most part. But a 50, I spool with a frog. Again, no offense, I extend a handshake of peace and this is twice now.
  4. Thank you, kind sir! This is the first and only fishing forum I've ventured to and enjoying it very much. Thank you for putting it out here to be enjoyed.
  5. Not bad huh? Look at this real amateur. And he probably hasn't been bass fishing for 25 years. For what it's worth, I was answering a question, not starting a size comparo with you I don't care how you far anyone casts, it's about weight at the end of the day. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rK6D0m8MZ08
  6. Add a bit of backing and you are down some more distance. I get to the backing on mine, and had to swap reels for good. My partner super tunes his reels, he will spool a 100 sized reel with a frog. Jigs don't fly well with appendages, but why cast a jig that far anyways. Nonetheless, the 50 is not optimal for the job (frogs/spooks) regardless of casting distance, the 100 is, it has a heavier and deeper spool. The 50 will be close to being maximized on a long cast. If that's ok, then go for it, but realize the 50 has limitations regarding some applications and that's what the OP asked about. You can use spinning gear with frogs, but would you? I think of towing with a V6, it can do the job, but has to work much harder to do it.
  7. lol, mine is bigger than yours! Depends on what you're doing with it. 12# line for 1/4oz crankbaits, nobody can spool it. I think most people can spool that tiny thing easily, casting a frog. Remember, 50# braid eats real estate quickly, on that spool. The OP asked for limitations, this is them.
  8. It surely casts as well as any reel. But the distance is simply impossible as it has a smaller spool, I.e. less line
  9. Sweet reel, but can't cast a frog too far with the tiny spool. Not knockin' it, because I like it, but it's got its place.
  10. Josh 1/8 is really small and you may have a problem with a 100 sized reel. However, you will not do well with 1/8 sized baits on that rod either. You may need two setups. I'd go with the 100 because most times you'll be throwing 1/4 to 3/4oz jigs. I'm a Shimano fan so I'd stick with that. You can use a FC leader with braid but why? I have been jig fishing for decades, 2.5 to be exact, and have never used a leader of any kind. Heavy mono or FC for me. Ever try to break 25# mono? The stuff is tuff! Retie every now and then, you won't need braid at all. I guess I'm just old school. FL
  11. Good work! I always shop smart too. Too bad you couldn't add more stuff to the bunch! Just made a good score also. Will share soon, when packages arrive. FL
  12. I have fished with Miller punch weights. They function well but they sit funny on your line, so I quit using them.
  13. Well they do spend lots of time in schools! FL
  14. Not many in comparison to some of you guys. Possibly around 500 but 2 baits makeup the bulk of that. My favorite 2 were discontinued and I collected them from everywhere I could for the following year. I have a fair amount of hardbaits, not that many. Also a couple hundred of my favorite frog. Had tons of rods too, but sold some and gave some away. FL
  15. Papajoe It's almost time for a break from the computer and go shovel Yes, quite done with this weather!
  16. It seems, the old Bill was reinstated to zero the votes against the Bill. FL

  18. Yes, very sad. God bless the boy and his family. Thank you to all of our service folks and to the ones who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Every day is a "thank a vet day". FL
  19. Well, I'm still alive, comp didn't blow up Luckily didn't click on the link! Thanks for trying.
  20. Yeah, mine too. Frog is a close second.
  21. Mitch I tend to think they avoid humans because we are larger than them, just like Pike and Muskie. It's a hardwired instinct to hide, not because we are human but because we are large in size. Lets say a bass from FL, that has never seen a Muskie, would he bolt if it saw a Muskie? I think so. Sunfish and minnows are skiddish too, they're just not as skiddish usually. Bass are seen in the shallows and swim by the boat, maybe not as often since there are fewer. Agreed, there is a reaction by fish when we touch them or if they're stuck with a hook, can't say it's pain though. Of course, you may fully well be correct seeing as nobody will ever know. Gladly, I defer if wrong but still haven't seen anything conclusively supporting the belief of fish feeling pain. It's logical to believe they feel pain, such as my dog when his paw is accidentally stepped on, but my dog is higher up on the evolutionary scale. Just my thoughts on it, I'm no scientist, lol. I just can't wait til Spring and enjoying some conversation with other fishermen. If they can feel pain, then I'm glad I've always been as gentle as I can with them. FL
  22. I wouldn't think to hurt a Bass or mistreat them in any way. Actually, I sometimes give thanks to Mr. Bass for the pleasure he has given into my life and continues to do so. In thanks, I treat him well, give him rides in an expensive boat as payment for biting my hook and promise to release him with a bunch of his kin after borrowing just 8 hours of his time. Pain has nothing to do with a fishes survival instinct so why would fish be hardwired for it? Fish are much lower on the evolutionary scale, compare to humans, and function within a basic life cycle. Eat, hide, and reproduce. Fish are not subjective thinkers knowing right from wrong and cannot make decisions based on feelings or forethought of pain. They aren't too bright but they are perfect for their world, unlike their human counterparts. FL
  23. Yup, please post
  24. Nothing wrong with multiple uses for the same rod. I use one rod type for 5 different setups. This happens because I like to frog with the same rod as I jig with, for example.
  25. Uh oh, here we go again! lol Here's a similar thread for you to peruse. Sounds like you have your setup correct. http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/topic/131864-punch-rig-snell-knot/ FL
