  1. That sucks! Id go with the *** black rod mentioned above, the fenwick, or a powell max or endurance on clearance at a lot of places right now. As far as reels the pfleguers get a lot of good press on here, and daiwa and shimano make some excellent reels in the price range you are looking at, especially if you keep the rod around $100. My favorite in that price range is the lews team gold carbon. I have the 300 size, but you could probably go with the 200. Super lightweight, strong drag, and very smooth retrieve. They are 130 retail but can be found cheaper new. Used is another great option to get some really high quality gear for $250. I bought my team lews for $80 and it had only been casted once. It also came with a full spool of nanofil braid so i saved on line
  2. I use a school backpack with 2 side pockets. 2 3700's and one slim 3600 in the main compartment. Tools.in the front compartment. And soft plastics in the 2 side.compartments
  3. I was talking to my dads girlfriend back during july about taking them fishing for bluegill and she said her dad told her bluegill dont live around here, only bream(a southern term for any sunfish). I let it go instead of arguing about it and said we would go for bass and she said her dad told her they went on bed and hibernated during the summer and winter and you couldnt catch them because they were asleep. I then said what about fishing for stripers and she said they dont live around here. I pulled out my phone and showed her a pic and she said see i know you didnt know anything about fishing, thats a rockfish(for some reason thats what everyone in my local area calls stripers and when i say striper everyone looks at me like i have 3 heads.) Needless to say we never went fishing and her and my dad split up. Sucks cause i really wanted to ask her dad where he got his info
  4. I lovey lews reels for the price but if you want a truly high end reel, go daiwa/shimano.depending on what braking you like
  5. Try fishing a small texas rig plastic near any cober slow. My favorite is the yum 3 inch wooly hawgtail in black/blue but those are hard to find. Finnesse worms in clearer water and craws/creatures in dingy water and shake them forever. Sometimes i spend 30 seconds shaking them before i ever touch my reel handle and take several minutes to make a cast. If you still cant catch a bass use a worm or something else to catch a bream and hook him in the back under the dorsal fin with no weight. Caught many bass up to 9lbs like that
  6. Berkley big game is the best ive tried. I had a 8lb wiper pull my line around a bridge piling and pull out at least 30 yards of line at a right angle to the piling and i reeled it in. I just knew the line was going to break, but it didnt and ive been using big game ever since when i use mono on casting reels
  7. I bank fish most of the time so i can't manage a lot of combos. I have 4 rods i always take and sometimes up to 6 depending on where im going 6'3" m/xf femwick smallmouth spinning and team lews gold carbon(skipping, jerkbaits, small cranks and topwater, also any time i need to be very accurate with anything under 1/4 oz 6'10" powell deisel spinning and lews tournament high speed spin(finesse worms and jigs and small cranks) 7'2" shimano clarus mh/xf and citica g (worms and jigs over 1/4 oz 7' pinnacle m/mf composite and daiwa tatula r (reaction baits over 1/4 oz) These are the 4 i always bring but sometimes depending on where im fishing i bring these Shakespeare ugly stick 7' mh spinninf(catfish and live bait) Shakespeare ultralight combo(panfish and trout) Okuma swimbait 7'6" mh(for swimbaits lol so mh throws 1/2 oz up to 4 oz for me) and daiwa tatula r (swimbaits, a rigs, big 1 oz jigs and spinnerbaits in deep water) Pinnacle composite 6'6" m/mf and cabelas fish eagle 2(made by daiwa)(smaller 1/4 and up reaction baits when i need to hit a target) I buy and sell equipment a lot so many of these may change soon. Im hoping to get another combo or two by spring
  8. Team lews gold carbon spinning reel nib for $80 New with tags fenwick elite tech smallmouth spinning for $75 New without tags shimano clarus 7'2"mh/xf for $40 Like new citica g6 for $60 Cabelas branded daiwa baitcast reel for $10 2 skeet reese cranking rods for 75 total with gift cards bought at discount from TW Powell deisel spinning rod for $4.88(the 2 skeet rods came with $25 gift cards each and this rod was on sale for $54.88 at the time 20+ new or like new lucky craft and jackall jerkbaits for $5-$8 each All of this stuff was bought of forums like bassresource, on sale at TW, at yard sales, and pawn shops
  9. I tried a few reels on it. It balanced pretty well with any 7+ oz casting reel. I had a citica g on it the most, but the $100 dollar lews speed spool felt pretty good too
  10. I had two and sold them after i got a good deal on some better rods. The 6'6" short mag crank rod was a great rod for target casting squarebills and lipless and was actually a lot better rod than i expected. The 7'10" rod was extremely tip heavy and didnt balance with any reel i tried. It handled any deep crank i threw, even a 10xd, but it was so heavy i couldnt enjoy using it
  11. Im very happy with mine. Definitely worth the price and its sensitive, especially compared with other rods in that price range. The no warranty deal didnt bother me because im careful with my rods and the way a lot of rod companies warranties work, you end up paying as much as buying a deisel by the time you ship another.rod back and pay a replacement fee. I use mine for plastics, jigs, and the occasional small crank i cant throw on my baitcaster
  12. My favorite combo i own is a team lews carbon spinning reel on a fenwick elite tech smallmouth spinning rod. Total weight of the combo is less than 12 oz with a 300 size reel. Weighs less than just my old daiwa 3000 size reel alone and has enough power to reel in every fish ive hooked on it so far.
  13. There are a lot of great deals out there this weekend but i thought id post this because i see a lot of pfleuger spinning reel fans on bassresource. Cabelas has the supreme xt spinning reel at half price ($74.99) with free shipping in all sizes!
  14. Reels are daiwa, lews, and shimano Rods are fenwick and *** Line is yo zuri, sunline, and berkley depending on whats on sale Lures are lucky craft, rapala, yo zuri But of course i have lots of other stuff too because the bait monkey rides my back hard lol
  15. Trey is right the pixys can be used for many other things besides finesse and so can the core 50 size. I fish for stripers as much as i do largemouth and smallmouth and forget sometimes that everyone doesnt need a larger line capacity. Any of the reels you mentioned are awesome reels. Its hard to go wrong with any daiwa or shimano reel in that price range. Good luck travis and let us know what you pick out and how it fishes when you get it
  16. Sorry i strayed from the topic op. Out of those reels what i would buy would depend on what you want to use it for. For lighter lures the px type r or a core 50. For more all around the core 100, metanium, or zillion type r
  17. They usually exclude shimano and some others but a lot of times if you call in your order instead they will honor the discount anyway as long as its not megabass or some other jdm stuff. Another way around the exclusion is to buy gift cards at a discount and then use them to buy what you want. Last year during the 25 day christmas sale i bought gift cards at a discount, then bought 2 rods that came with gift cards with the gift cards i bought. Basically i gave 80 bucks for a 100 gift card, bought 2 skeet reese cranking rods with the gift card and got another 50 bucks in gift cards with the rods. They werent my favorite rods but were definitely worth 15 bucks apiece!
  18. I like using wake baits early in the morning at sunup, on cloudy days, and at night. On baits like the red fin and long a with lips molded into the body, you can heat the bill with a lighter or candle and bend it downwards slightly so you can retrieve faster while still keeping the bait on top. Its easy to overdo it and kill the action though so you may want to practice it on some beat up baits first
  19. Its hard to buy a bad reel for 200 bones. I agree with the above posts in that a lot of the decision should come down to what braking system you prefer. Another thing to consider is what type of rod you are putting it on and whether you need a heavier or lighter reel to balance it out. Also there are some great reels on clearance and below retail right now and most places have black friday sales going on soon so you can save even more money. Right now at tackle warehouse you can get a daiwa zillion or lews team gold or shimano chronarch ci4 for not much more than 200 and on black friday they would all be in your price range. Sometimes they have exclusions on the website for certain manufacturers like daiwa and shimano but if you call in your order they will honor the sale price anyway
  20. Lews had a bad batch of reel knobs from what i read over on tt but they got the issue straightened out. From what the guys over there said that had the same problem lews will replace the knobs if you contact them even if your reel is out of warranty and lots of guys got some free shirts and hats to make up for their trouble. Not taking up for lews as im not affiliated with them in any way, but ive had great experiences with their customer service the few times i had to deal with them and they will make it right
  21. I like the longer handles and love the lews knobs personally. I made mine bulkier with reel grips because they are a little on the thin side. Had to heat them up with a hair dryer and force them on but that helped a lot. Ive even swapped out all my daiwa handles except on my tatula with the lews power handles. The carbon fiber ones are 50 pretty much everywhere and i bought some for 30 a while back at a flea market. They make a big difference in comfort and power. I like the hawgech 102mm handles too, im just too cheap lol
  22. I catch a ton of fish on my bombers! Which ones did you buy? If you really eant rid of them shoot me a pm and ill take them off your hands
  23. Rods by fenwick, shimano, ***, daiwa, shakespeare, pinnacle, and powell. Reels by daiwa, shimano, lews, and mitchell Thats for right now but i buy and sell fishing gear pretty regular so theres no telling what ill have soon lol
