Buying a ranger rt178. Standard electronics vs optional?
For me it would be important to network bow and console units with N2K and Ethernet NOW. Also suggest using HDS bow and console.

Help picking out a fish finder
Lowrance, during the Bass Pro Spring Fishing Classic has some super deals going. Bundled deals with StructureScan and deals on Gen-2 touch screen HDS units. You also get BPS Triple Crown deals as well. Great units....Great savings!

HDS 9 Side Imaging Question
Set your Range to AUTO and that should be corrected. You may just be overshooting at 80 feet in 20 feet of water. In 14' of water I get about 45' to each side.

Need new dash/bezel mounting plate for electronics
They do some very nice work out of Acrylic or aluminum. I will add that anyone with a quality CNC machine can your panel because of it's simplicity. Check your local phonebook.

Check with newwiremarine.com. Those are generally done on a CNC machine. Won't be cheap.

Need help choosing new unit
If you mix brands you give up the opportunity to SHARE between units, add waypoints to ALL units at once, and you will find it very confusing working with two totally different user interfaces. I would suggest selling the Gen2 keypad unit (8") and getting a second Gen-2 7" Touch. This way when you add the Gen-3 you can share EVERYTHING across the Ethernet network and the N2K. Map cards, CHIRP, StructureScan and external devices like temp sensores and GPS modules are all shared. Here's the thing with IG. The process in place allows the IG software to VERIFY your submitted data so it can be added to the SocialMap files. This is the only way to hold up the integrity of the SocialMaps. The whole process, depending on internet speed and file size, takes about an hour or two before you can create the map. Creating the map takes maybe 10 minutes. Now you have a map that you can trust, not to mention there are many things you can do with IG that can't be done with any others on the market. So if you go as I suggested above, you need only to create a single map and place the card into any HDS, and share it across your entire network of Lowrance equipment. And NOW with IG you can put many many maps on a single Micro SD card instead of having lots of cards.

Lowrance 5.0 update issues
So 5.0 is still a .zip file unlike the upgrade for Gen3 and StructureScan 3D. Are you D/L the file then unzipping the file to your SD card before you put card into HDS?

Lowrance Hook?
If it will ease your thought process, Lowrance, beginning January 2015 (last year) went to a Five Year Family! That means the Elite-TI and HOOK families have 5 years ahead of them before design or hardware changes.

Lowrance Hook?
Shipping in mid-February I understand. Non-networkable stand-alone entry level units that offer mapping, CHIRP, and DownScan depending on the unit you select. Compatible with Insight, Navionics Gold, Fishing Hotspots Pro, Hotmaps Premium, C-Map and a couple others. 3 to 9 inch screen sizes.

hds gen 3 transducer install?
Both transducers are mounted behind chines and will surely deliver turbulant water to the face of each xdcr. Suggest you move both left for cleaner water. Also turn the SS ducer around and use the software to flip the image. Remember tho, the SS xdcr must be slightly lower than the 2D xdcr.

Light Weight Ff Battery For A Kayak
Power chair batteries work great. I use two of these for 3-day boat shows where I run 2 HDS, and a NMEA network about 10 hours per day. They last but as you can expect, they are low nearing the end of day 3.

Electronics- Leave On Or Take Off
I leave all 3 of my 9's on the boat and connected, and yes they are locked. I don't like fumbling around with 'pinned' connectors in thecold or dark. Too easy to bend or break a post/pin. There are advantages to any way you choose to do this, as well as disadvantages.
