  1. I had that same noise and swapped in a new main gear and pinion and the noise went bye bye.
  2. Look at the Daiwa Aird X at Academy. On clearance for $39 right now. The M actions feel good for cranks. I couldn't pass up the deal. The Shock feels like a heavy broomstick compared to it.
  3. New cheap setup. I got about $40 in the whole combo. Rod is a Daiwa Aird X I paid $21 for at Academy. I was trying to match the ugly gold reel.
  4. We now have an Academy 5min from me. The Ethos rods are always sold out and go fast. Must be a good sign. The thing I've noticed is that their powers seem overrated a bit. Other than that the blanks seem very nice.
  5. I have not. The only stuff I've used like that is the Pline CX Premium. Had that nice glow to it in low light.
  6. The Amp is a bit whippy would be good for cranks up to 1/2oz I'd say. I had a couple yrs back. Hopefully they corrected the reel seat problem.
  7. Just seeing if there are anymore users of the new Yo-Zuri Top Knot fluoro? I'm looking to try it this Spring, but haven't seen reviews yet. I love the Hybrid.
  8. The guy is asking for opinions on one or the other reels not everyone's opinions on what to buy.
  9. Bass Pro Carbonlite handles for $15. I believe they are 85mm 4 bearing handles. I've got up to .20 oz shaved off a reel, but it's not really noticeable. I just like the EVA knobs.
  10. Split the diff with their 6'9" model. I have the 6'6"M version. It can handle weights to about 1/2 imo. I still wouldn't throw a 1/2oz jig on it though.
  11. it's pretty much tuned I polished about everything inside and flushed the bearings. I'll be looking at M action rods I'm not one that goes below 1/4oz with a baitcast.
  12. I am not sure the avg cost, but I only had to put $18 in this so far. Outdoor World has cheap parts on BPS reels and these were new parts. It's more just the time invested. Thanks. The dude ended up just giving it to me for my time. Win win. I plan on using it this Spring and just giving it back.
  13. Thanks. Now finding a rod to match will be fun
  14. A friend of mine sent me an older dirty CL10H Carbonlite to clean & grease and fix the drag. He knows its Winter and I enjoy this kind of stuff. I was able to replace the drag washers with new ones plus a new side plate assembly which includes new bearing and brake drum. The spool and pinion were polished. I used Suberlube & TSI 321. Its noticeably smoother and quieter. Here's is the finished product. I guess a before pic would have been nice here. Thanks Goose for the info.
  15. I guess it also depends how far into your cast you are when you hook the fish. I've never had a problem running 60-70yds of line for bass fishing only.
  16. Yes, $75 seems fair. Talk to Goose about it.. its the same reel basically as the PQ. Check out the condition of the brake drum and brakes before you buy it. I'm working on one now and the cost for parts is starting to add up a fast.
  17. That's more than I want to spend considering I won't be charging him anything and he may not sell it to me. Anyway, the brakes tabs look in way better shape than the drum does. I think it will be fine for awhile. I fixed the squeak by greasing up the AR sleeve & running a little oil along the spool and pinion raceway The spool still spins freely.
  18. Goose, what did that spool assembly cost for the PQ if you recall? I read through your 5 year post and didn't see that you listed that. I could have missed it. Great post!
  19. DVT, sorry for pulling an old post. The spool raceway? I got an annoying faint squeak I'm trying to find. Do I add a little oil along the raceway after cleaning the surface? Also, what about polishing the two spool lips/edges? How much grease between the frame and the drag star area where the washers () sit on the shaft? I've seen some pics of people really loading it up there and on the drive shaft. The reel wasn't squeaking until after I cleaned and greased it. The handle is not the problem I've already taken that off and it still squeaks.
  20. Yep, I don't need anything more than 6.4:1 and like to use 5.4:1 as much as I can get away with it.
  21. The sleeve looks good I even polished it up. It was the outside of the AR once I popped it out of the gear plate. I already ordered new drag washers for it before I posted this. It's white or used to be it's pretty dirty, but I really didn't work on it yet. It's seems ok, but I haven't tested it with line on it yet. Thanks!
  22. No. I asked that same question. Full spool of fluoro
  23. Thanks, just making sure. And I got a thumbs ? on the sideplate assembly today.
  24. Goose, one last question: the sleeve that goes over the AR bearing which way should the prongs be facing towards the drag washer or upward towards the handle? It's completely hollow on one end and has a little squaring on the inside of the other end to hold it tight.
  25. Hello DVT I am fixing a reel for a friend that has never been open / serviced since new prob 6yrs. It's the old gold Carbonlite. He complains of the drag slipping often. I'm not finding an issue yet. I've cleaned it well and greased it. Any ideas on the drag slippage? I did order new drag washers from Outdoor World. Should I order the AR clutch bearing too? I did see some good scuffs on the outside of the AR bearing, but not sure if that's an issue. The parts are quite cheap so I don't mind buying them. Thanks, Chris
