Small river bass
Cabelas is having a sale on their pro guide spinning rods...They're going for 35 right now. Im hoping to grab one soon... I personally would use a 2 piece ML rod with a fast tip for small rivers. It can do anything you will need it to do and they are fun to fight fish on! (especially smallies) As far as line goes, 10 lb braid with a mono or fluoro leader could be nice - sensitive and easy to cast... But I would think that a spool of like 6 lb mono would meet your needs. For baits, I would throw hair jigs (you can tie your own if you want), grubs, tubes, and some #2 and #3 bucktail mepps. http://www.cabelas.com/product/fishing/fishing-rods/spinning-rods%7C/pc/104793480/c/104764680/sc/104836680/cabela-s-pro-guide-reg-spinning-rods/1722610.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Fspinning-rods%2Fcabelas%2F_%2FN-1102841%2B1000002949%2FNe-1000002949%2FNs-CATEGORY_SEQ_104836680%3FWTz_st%3DGuidedNav%26WTz_stype%3DGNU

Finding Fish Without Electronics
Hey guys, I am wondering how to approach a lake without electronics. I read (and have experienced) a lot about how important water temp and depth are to where fish might be, but there are many occasions where I don't have any electronics -- I usually just bust the banks and weedy drop offs...In your guys' experiences, what are some good ways to find where fish are with no outside help other than maybe a map? Any important features to keep an eye out for? Thanks!

Ideal Bottom Type?
Hey guys, I am wondering if there are any bottom types (like sand, peat, muck, marl, rocks etc..) that bass prefer, or generally avoid. Is there an ideal bottom type? Or an undesirable bottom one? Does it really matter? Also, I see on maps a distinction between muck and peat. To me they seem like the same thing... Do bass relate to them differently? What have you guys experienced? Thanks!

The Most Amazing Thing You've Ever Caught That Wasn't A Fish!
When I was little, I was worm fishing for trout. The wind blew my cast behind me and I reeled in a robin for a good 20 yards...

Natural Lakes?
Here in Michigan, we don't have any large impoundments. I will always be on a natural lake. Does anyone know of any good articles or tips on how bass behave in natural lakes? Most of the stuff that I read has to do with huge highland impoundments, and can't always be transferred over. Thanks.

Rod For Lake Trout (Trolling Without Downrigger)
Are you on the big lake? Will you be running copper or lead, and dragging the bottom? If you are on the big lake, I would say get a 7- 8 foot rod that is MH. Anything that says it is a big lake rod should work fine. We never pay too much attention to rods for the big lake. Again, if you are on the big lake, will you be running lead/copper, or a super deep diver set up? If you are running a dipsey diver, get a rod that is meant for that, Okuma, shimano, and i think shakespeare make nice dipsey rods. If you are running lead and copper, Any rod that is 7'6 ish MH should be fine. I would probably look for big lake specific rods, and for this set up get a reel with lots of line capacity and a decent drag, sometimes we run lines out over 500 feet, the clicker will indicate a strike. If you are fishing an inland lake, I would just get a decent crankbait type rod. MH 7 foot mod action, or something of the like.

High School Tournament
Hey guys, my school is participating in the first ever west Michigan high school bass tournament. It will be a running weight catch and release tournament because it is before the catch and keep opener. It's two kids and an observer per boat, lake unknown. I was wondering if you guys have any tips for my first tournament. Maybe more specifically, how to come up with some kind of good game-plan. Thanks!

Winter River Smallies
Hey, The itch to fish right now is way too strong for how frozen everything is... The river that runs through town has great smallmouth fishing, but I have never tried them in the winter. (This is a real live northern winter). Do any of you guys have experience with winter river smallies? How/ where do you catch them?

Best Tactics For Small River Smallies?
this ^ or, you could drop hair jigs behind big rocks. I've done well pitching weightless tubes into the overhanging stuff and the undercuts.

Catfishfishing Rod And Reel
Berkley and shakespeare make some catfish specific rods. There are others too. They just long (7-8ft) medium heavy rods that you would pair with a heavy duty reel. Any rod/ reel that can handle big cats should work fine, especially if you are just sitting shrimp or dip baits on the bottom.

What Is A Good Price To Pay For A Beginner Fly Combo
Scientific Angler makes a nice beginner kit. It has some decent line, and a solid rod/reel. I am primarily a fly fisherman, and I use both the panfish and bass kit for all kinds of fish. The line does fine, I would replace it if I wasn't so dang cheap! But it's nice. They have a trout, panfish, bass and saltwater kit. I have landed plenty of big fish with these rods. The drag on the reel handled 10-15 lb carp well, and river steelies too (5 wt). I would put some nice 6 wt line on it because it's easier to cast, and it is a 5/6wt.

What Is A Short Stout Rod Good For?
We have this old 5'6" casting rod from 1990 and its really stiff. I think my dad bought it at a yard sale for 5 bucks with another rod. It has a super short handle. What type of rigs would that rod be good for?
