Cutting off hook keepers is the best thing you can do on some rods. When I cut mine off I use side cutters, file it down, and replace it with a Fuji EZ hook keeper. Those Fuji hook keepers are awesome because you can put them in the exact spot you want it and take it off when you feel like it.

Balsa. It is much easier to work with, it's great for people just getting into luremaking. With balsa though, you HAVE to seal it twice, for instance. After your blank is finished seal it with 2 part epoxy, then paint it, then epoxy it again. I'm sure you have to do it with cedar, but it is vital with balsa.

I was thinking about ordering this from TW (it's only $60). It's going on a ML Carrot Stix, so it would make a pretty nice combo. Anyone have any experience with it, good or bad? And what line would you suggest? It will throw some topwaters, so you think light flouro would be ruled out?

Makelure.com has great how-to starter videos. Jannsnetcraft is great for the actual components. The best way to do it, is start with topwaters then work your way down the water column. The further down the bait goes the harder it is to make. Good luck, lure crafting is a great hobby to pick up.
