  1. IMO braid is a great option for everything you listed except jerkbaits and cranks. But for those you can just tie on a flouro leader about double the length of your rod to give you a little stretch to help with those trebles.
  2. Hard to go wrong with the Avid X. For $150 you should be able to find one on the secondary market. I bought one new for $170 recently. If you're wanting to save some coin and go a cheaper route, I'd recommend looking at the Lighting Rod Shock and the Hell bent from #8 tackle.
  3. I really like the sensitivity of braid. For jigs I use 30lb Smackdown with a flouro leader on a casting set up. I also use a spinning setup for jigs in some situations, and for that I currently have 14lb fireline.
  4. Nope. DVT posted his response as I was typing mine. I typed that last line in a separate post and it just auto added it to my other one. Weird.
  5. I ordered the 5x:1 so I guess there's still a shot. Will update when I get shipping confirmation or cancellation notice.
  6. No, I'm just messing with you, my friend. I'm no expert on the structure of fishing rods, but from looking at your pic I would think it'll be just fine. I'm sure DVT or others will be along soon enough and can give you more expert advice. Ha. I can tell the future!
  7. It should be fine so long as you don't catch any fish on it. Also, make sure you wear safety glasses when you use it so that when the rod finally does snap, that guide won't put your eye out. Other than that I would only advise keeping it at least 50' away from water and you should be fine.
  8. What knot are you using? I use an Alberto knot and don't have any problems with it going through the micro guides. FG knot is also very compact but harder to tie properly.
  9. Looks like cabelas has the exo PT on sale for $99 right now.
  10. Grabbed a few of the Berkley Warpigs recently and they are working out pretty good.
  11. This all day long. I would add to that a lipless crank. Basically anything you can use for a reaction strike.
  12. War Eagle, Booyah, and Terminator are what I typically throw. But I also bought a few of the $1 ones that Walmart had last year and probably caught just as many fish on those as I did any of my other, more expensive ones.
  13. Threw my first one of this season more than a month ago. It was a black/red Booyah pond magic spinner bait.
  14. E6X is not worth that price, IMO. Many better options in that price range.
  15. Berkeley lighting rod shock. Within your price range, and tough to beat at that price. I would also take a look at the He11bent rod from #8 tackle - I think DSG recently had them on sale for $50.
  16. Ditch the flouro for sure. I prefer straight braid for topwater fishing.
  17. Typically a slow, steady retrieve, but I will vary techniques depending on what the fish want. Will sometimes give it a jerk-jerk-pause, sometimes, sometimes use a yo-yo retrieve, sometimes let it fall and drag it back across the bottom or even burn it back as high in the water column as I can keep it. Don't be afraid to try different techniques, and use whatever is working for you on that day.
  18. Need a little more info to be helpful - what is the temperature and clarity of the water? A lot of the ponds in my area are stained for a good part of the year, as is the case right now. Water temps are in mid 50's. So I'm throwing a lot of spinnerbaits (darker colors - black/red, black blue, with gold Colorado blades), as well as chatterbaits (similar colors), and lipless cranks (reds, blues, black/chrome). Having a little luck on stationary and slower moving topwaters. A few of the ponds I'm fishing are a little clearer, and in those I'm also throwing senkos and Ned rigs with decent results.
  19. I use the Alberto knot and have great success with it.
  20. Pretty sure that prop bait is made by Heddon.
  21. This is what I use and they work great.
  22. That's largely true of a defective blank. However, if I'm a year and one day into a $250 rod and the insert falls out of a guide or the guide wrap starts to come loose, I don't want to be SOL. Also, I may buy rod and barely use it until midway into the next season and would like to have a warranty.
