  1. I'll add that you'll probably want to use a higher gear ratio reel.I use a 6.3:1 ratio, it helps get the lure onto the surface more quickly. It seems that the higher pitch noise or squeak of the blade seems to work the best. I don't know if its coincidence or the fish like it more.
  2. I would say my top 3 would be 1. Denny Brauer- he use to live very close to my hometown and started a bass club in our area, and seems like a very friendly person to be around. 2. Rick Clunn - he has many years of experience and has a interesting philosophy on fishing that interests me. 3. Greg Hackney- A younger guy that i like his style of fishing and can relate it to alot of the same techniques that i use often.
  3. I had a bad experience 2 years ago on the missouri river. Mind you this is the first time with my boat on a river, so i didn't have much experience. Well here is how it starts, the night before I asked my partner to check to make sure the fuel can was full in the boat. Bad idea i should have checked. So we decide to head back to the ramp, so were going up river and all of a sudden the boat quits running. I'm puzzled cause it was running great, cranked and cranked no start. Asked my partner you checked the gas right? "Yep" So i checked it myself, well what do you know we're out of gas. So we had to float down river about a mile to the next town. Needless to say my friend had a nice walk to the gas station a few blocks down, put the tank back in and we're rollin home.

  5. Many times you'll want to fish windblown banks for bass. the wind will move zooplankton in turn which will attract baitfish to the area, and where there are baitfish many times there are bass. I enjoy fishing windblown areas because many fisherman do avoid wind. Most the time i'll use a spinnerbait or crankbait, and if its overcast i may even throw a topwater given the wind isn't to fierce.
  6. My first bass was caught when i was about 8 or 9, i caught it on a topwater popper what a good way to start out. I belive it was around 2-1/2 lbs
  7. I haven't been able to get my boat out this year, the reason being is that i'm replacing the floor. It doesn't help when i don't have much time to work on it. I get upset everytime i walk by it in the garage and see it.
  8. As long as I can convince my wife to let me , I try to get to the lake by 5:30-6am and usually stay til around noon. But if i can i'll be out the whole afternoon.
  9. I have a pair of Costa's, the harpoon model all i have to say are good things. Its like just about every product produced you get what you pay for. Spend a little more and get a better quality pair.
  10. I'd say it depends on what time of day, i like starting out with a buzzbait/topwaters in the mornings.
  11. I would like to use carolina rigs more and try using more plastics, but i use alot of cranks and spinnerbaits with good success.
  12. I think alot of times if you can find water running into a lake that will create fresh oxygen which in turn will attract baitfish, which attracts bass. JMO. :-/
  13. Just curious what some of you are using for trolling motor batteries?
  14. Buy some new tackle , service your reels, reorganize your tackle just a few that come to mind
  15. For me it was the buzzbait it seemed like almost everytime i was out i had one on, i'll have to say almost all my largest fish came on a buzzbait this year. I did have great success on cranks and traps too. spinner bait always produces well for me too. I'm gonna try throwing more jigs and slower techniques next season, but its hard when you have good bites on the faster lures.
  16. me and my fishing partner are getting together to go through our gear too, and of course i started making a list for next year. Hopefully the wife gets my new tackle bag for x-mas I have a problem with crankbaits though, i probably have a dozen new ones waiting to be opened and put in boxes. Had to get while they were on sale, or at least thats what the bait monkey suggested.
  17. Tell them the bait monkey just stopped by and you'll be back tomorrow with another new lure to tick them off with. ;D
  18. I've always used some type of trailer, whether it be a grub, or twin tail grub. Mainly because the water i fish is usually fairly dirty. Maybe i'll have to try without and compare the results
  19. Heck I'll be a coach, you wouldn't even have to pay me ;D
  20. I enjoy fishing in the wind, because most people don't!! Less people on the water then. Oh and it usually helps fishing too
  21. I picked some Bomber Square A's that were on sale at BPS, they do pretty well on deflecting through cover, but hangups are inevitable. So have your lure retriever handy
  22. I have a couple of old shimano 10xsg's, i love em they cast a mile and have never let me down
