with the weight being at the opposite end and fixed, the bass' shaking head acts like a pendulum - more than likely why you lose some on a jig. Set the hook so hard you cross his eyes - that may help

That tool looks useful, but in my case it would be one more item on the boat that I could lose.

Good luck with the rod building. I can tell you that a nice custom made rod is something fisherman should have atleast one of. I would consider having it made for you however. There are some great rodmakers out there, i hear ReelMech from the board does a great job. Good luck!

I don't know the Garcia reel, but I can tell you that the Zillion casts like no other reel I own.
